That was the last straw: Boycotting Virginia clubs

It looks like I'm going to be retiring from clubbing. Either that, or I'll only go to clubs when I'm out of town, which isn't very often. :( I recently read a review of the downtown Paper Moon in Richmond that informed me of some new rules they've implemented. In the past, this club has always offered 2 types of dances. For $20 you can get a no touch dance where the girl doesn't take anything off. It's just a bikini dance, and it's not even worth the 20 bones because it's an air dance. The next option is a $60 2 for 1 in which they take their top off (still have pasties on) but they have to keep…

Toronto in a Nutshell

I walk into a suburban Toronto club (no cover, no valet), get a beer (cheaper than Detroit) and walk over towards the stage. I settle in at a table about three rows back and begin to take it all in. The performer on stage is a thin, tall blonde of about 30 and she's completely nude. I notice there's two levels to the club and a couple of TVs, one showing porn and the other some sporting event. I see a few other guys scattered about, that the furniture is barely serviceable and pretty uncomfortable. Evidently I should've been paying attention as the song had ended.

All of the sudden the stage performer has arrived at my table almost…

Burlesque, Strip Clubs, and History

The recent resurgence of the Burlesque art form figures prominently in the lives of those of us who rely on strip clubs for one reason or another. It's important to address how burlesque figures into history and the history of strip clubs.

One hundred years ago, there wasn't strip clubs, but there was Burlesque Halls. Like strip clubs, burlesque halls faced a good chance of being raided because of the blatant display of sexuality. Burlesque halls didn't have full nudity, but what was key to the women performing was revealing costumes, a flirtatious dance, and the occasional boob or pubic peek. The hall always had a live orchestra (it's hard to call a string section, brass, and percussion a…
