I wouldn't be worried about the insurance company going out of business unless it wasn't highly rated. Plus at least some states have protection in case it does happen similar to FDIC. Don't know the particulars and I believe licensed insurance agent can't even tell you about it but that too may be state specific. There are many types of annuities and shouldn't be lumped together.
