@Alucard, I know of no Canadian movie portrayal of the events of D-Day. That is not to say that such a movie does not exist, just that I am no movie expert. Military history is one of my great interests. I have read scores of books about WWII and, if you are interested, as a starting point I suggest that you might read Eisenhauer's memoirs or even Churchill's. I am planning another European holiday this coming August/September to tour the sites of the various battles that my Dad's armoured regiment fought. His regiment had been fighting in Italy for about a year when D-Day took place. My Dad's regiment saw combat in France at Dieppe in August, 1942. I will be spending some time at Dieppe and I will also be visiting the D-Day beaches.

@motorhead, I can't question your hypothesis; I know very little about that era of American history. I lived through it, though; and even though I was a young guy starting out in business I read newspapers religiously and tried to keep up with current events. As I remember things Bobby and Lyndon Johnson detested each other. If Johnson hadn't folded his tent Bobby would not have got a whiff of the Democratic presidential nomination. Why did Johnson really fold his tent? Was he just terminally toxic because of Viet Nam? A campaign of Johnson vs. Nixon would have been bloody, dirty, and fascinating. Johnson was a much better campaigner than Nixon ever was and he was just as evil and nasty a man as Nixon was.

Sorry you guys. I think The Longest Day is a travesty of a movie, a pure Hollywood fantasy about what really happened on June 6, 1944. The American contribution was not anywhere near as great for the success of the Normandy landings as the movie leads its viewers to believe. What the movie really shows is the poor performance of the American military on Omaha and Utah beaches and the absolutely pathetic performance of the 82nd and 101st airborne troops. It also reveals the lousy leadership of the American generals. There were three other beaches stormed on June 6, 1944 - Sword, Juno, and Gold. The performance of the British and Canadian troops was much better. The British and Canadian paratroops also performed better than their American counterparts. Quite simply, they were better trained troops with much more combat experience than the American cannon fodder. Not braver or more courageous, just better trained and more experienced. The only army to achieve and even exceed the planned objectives on June 6, 1944 was the Canadian Army at Juno. Canadian generals were screaming for reinforcements and materiel so they could exploit the breakthrough they had achieved. Eisenhauer refused. He was blinded by the mess that the Americans had created for themselves. This was a colossal blunder and cemented Eisenhauer's reputation as a useless combat general. There would have been no grinding weeks of heavy combat through the Normandy bocages. There would have been no Falaise Gap with upwards of 500,000 German troops escaping to continue fighting all the way back to Germany. It is probable that the western allies would have taken Berlin by Christmas 1944, leaving the Russians hundreds of kilometres east somewhere in Poland; changing the entire post-WWII European geopolitical mess. June 6, 1944 was a glorious and complicated military operation just not exactly as portrayed in The Longest Day.

    Who's clubbing?
I am going to the Petroleum Club in Calgary tonight. Working dinner on my tab trying to do a favourable deal for oil storage tanks. The storage tank noob that I am taking to dinner has never been to the Petroleum Club. I hope he is impressed enough to cut me a good price on 50 storage tanks. No strippers in the Petroleum Club.

@ime, I have two projects on the go currently. My grandfather's black beauty, a late 1940s Packard and an old Ford 1 ton box grain truck from WWII that my dad used on the farm for about 30 years. I always called that old truck the 'Reptile' when I drove it around the farm in the early 1960s. The Packard was in storage for about 40 years after my grandpa's death in 1955. I have it in good mechanical order and the interior is in impeccable condition. Body needs a bit of work and paint, of course. Parts are a bitch to find. The old grain truck was out in the weather for about 30 years and it is in very rough shape. I have it running but there is much work remaining to be done. I don't think I will ever finish that project but it is lots of fun to spend a mindless day tinkering with it in my shop. I have two hulks in my yard that I am stripping for parts and I always keep my eyes open during my travels for more hulks that I can scoop up.

I never married. I wish I had done so. I would have liked to have been a father but I would probably have been a failure as a husband. Much too late in my life to do anything about it now.

Neither. Tractors and pick-ups. I can remember riding into town with my dad on the tractor. That was rare; usually he bundled my sister, my youngest brother, and mom into the front of the pick-up, with we other three boys in the box. First pick-up that I remember was a 1948 F-1.

How about I put a shout in my will for you about my whisky cellar?

@3LeggedMan, No way in hell am I posting sweetie's photo here. There would be a flood of you tuscl horndogs to Club Pro. @SlickSpic, I am not a connoisseur of Italian cuisine but the fish was excellent; so fresh - caught in the morning, on your plate for lunch or dinner. The food on Corsica and along the Cote d'Azur was much more to my taste. French cuisine is #2 on my food lists. Best meal was in a Michelin-starred restaurant on the Cote on our last night; classic French multi-course meal with divine sauces. Best souffle of my life for dessert.

@londonguy, As long as that useless crowd of twits stays in the British Isles I am fine with them. They belong to you. Keep 'em there. Have you guys even had a monarch of English blood since Elizabeth I? I can think of a whole string of Scots, Dutch, Germans, Greeks, Danes; not too many true blue English since about 1600. That first Betty must have been a real ball buster. Tell the truth, londonguy, aren't you appalled at the thought of Chuckles the Clown becoming your king? King Charlie III? Horse-faced Queen Camilla of the suspect personal hygiene? Didn't something real nasty happen to Charles I? Nell Gwynne was supposed to have given Charles II the gift that keeps on giving (and dripping and dripping and dripping.....).

I was 4 years old. No TV on our farm until the early 1960s when I was about 13-14. As a result, I never did pick up the TV-watching addiction. It truly pisses me off that we have that dreary old queen's face on all our coinage here in Canada and on our $20 bills. She is revered but for what?......being the matriarch of one of the world's most dysfunctional families? Crypto-nazis the lot of them! That Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (aka Windsor since WWI) family makes the Kardashians look like a normal, well adjusted group. I dearly wish that Canada becomes a republic in my lifetime. I like the British parliamentary system much better than your USA system of government but I really want the Canadian head of state to be an elected Canadian citizen. Not holding my breath.

I don't swap phone numbers with dancers. I don't text with dancers. I do use e-mail to communicate with dancers. Two trusted OTC sweeties have access to an innocuous phone number. John Barleycorn took over my brain one night in a club causing me to break those rules and as a result, I had to kill the corrupted phone number and e-mail account.

I recently saw a photo of Sophia Loren. She must be 80-ish. She still looked hot to me. She was smokin' back in her day - late 1950s, early 1960s.
