Any system in which "everyone does well" is fundamentally flawed.
Those that put forth the effort to do well should surely be rewarded commensurate with their efforts and gifts.
Those that do not put forth any effort deserve no reward.
Those that are exceptional deserve exceptional reward.
With no consequence to underachieving and no reward for overachieving, we become a nation of mediocrity. Not a place in which I would wish to live. In fact, over enough time, we become a system of losers -- as there is no consequence to sucking since "everyone does well".
It seems the only healthy system is a meritocracy.
We must all, no matter our circumstance, aspire to improve ourselves. A system of rewards promotes aspiration -- which is how America has led the world in improving the human condition for 200 years.

Socialism will kill the American Experiment if allowed to progress as it has the last 30 years.
Legislating morality is wrong in a place nicknamed the land of the free.
Protect me from you -- protect you from me -- fine! Don't protect me from me!
If I want a 64 oz. soft drink -- fuck off. If I want to stick my dick ANYWHERE or in ANY ADULT that wants it, in exchange for anything (a marriage license, dinner, cash, whatever) -- fuck off.
This country is approaching a tipping point in which a majority of voters are beholden to suckling at the government teat. Free college? Free healthcare? Free meals? No Taxes? Free this? Free that? Free! This is the most dangerous threat to the American Experiment since the Cuban Missile Crisis.
We must shrink government! We must deregulate! We must all keep a greater share of what we earn! We must recognize when those in power only seek to secure their power for their own futures. We should have terms limits for all political office. We need to elect representation that will roll this shit back!!

This is a terrific thread. Congrats to OP for getting it started.
This thread effectively illuminates us all as to why we are so far from anything resembling harmony in this country. SO many DEEPLY held viewpoints and so little willingness to even hear the other side of each coin. How are we EVER going to reach win/win solutions to our issues??
Would anyone argue that the United States is more racially harmonious than it was 8 years old? I surely would not.
Albert Einstein warned that insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. Maybe it is time we all -- citizens, politicians, law-enforcement, bad guys -- all try something different.

They never tell you what you need to know.
I wish the media would return to reporting the news instead of trying to make the news. Biased reporting on both sides is irritating. TV news programs and newspaper editorials seem to be horribly biased. 60 minutes is the worst.

I think we would be better off if these dancers were treated as independent contractors fairly and in all ways. Instead of nickel and diming the dancers with fees and fines for this and for that, charge them whatever is needed to make the establishment profitable and allow the dancers to perform whatever services they wish at whatever fees they deem fair. Let them keep all of what they collect. Let them earn their keep. Let the market decide what their time should cost.
You ugly, you earn less. You give a shitty dance, you earn less. You unpleasant, you earn less.
By only allowing dancer to keep half what she earns, we get half-assed service.

I sort of agree with gammanu and with the OP.
Only a moderate with both right and left leanings will ever be able to broker compromise across the aisle. Far right candidates enrage the left and far left candidates enrage the right. We've had too many years (decades) of rage across the aisle with no action or solution to the real problems facing this country (nee, this world).
America is weakened during federal pissing matches. Just look at the last 16 years. All that happens is everyone gets covered in piss.

@Random -- I declare my vote for Trump by a narrow margin because that is how I see it today. I am curious for the debates and am glad the election is over 3 months away. Based on my observations and the facts as they are presented, I may change my position between now and November.
I do not share your view of Trump. I see him as more of a well-intended ego-maniac whose positions are not fully well informed. As someone who has never held public office, he is as well informed as anyone in a similar position might be expected to be. That is what makes him an attractive "outsider". His independent wealth means he owes no favors to any special interest. I find that attractive. He is not stupid. I do not see him as evil.
I have voted for Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Gore, McCain, et al. Yeah, I am one of those -- objective and beholden to no one.
It seems to me that anyone that can declare loudly and profoundly for either Trump or Clinton at this early stage cannot reasonably be seen as either moderate or independent and are ranting in favor of their far right or far left leanings as they would in the case of ANY candidate proposed by their party of choice.
I think (and hope) this will finally be one of those presidential elections where the choices are not so clear cut. We shall see . . .

I think it is safe to say that anyone with the gall to run for President has to have giant balls of steel. It is the ultimate ego-feeding arrogant career move of all time. Who else imagines himself (or herself) the leader of the most powerful nation on the planet.
The economy did well under Bill Clinton. He also got welfare under control. I'm not sure Hillary will have the same positive effects as WJC. Hillary has indicated the intent to continue BHO's vision and agenda.
The country (and the world) has foundered under BHO. Virtually nothing is better than it was 8 years ago. Nothing. Not race relations. Not domestic security. Not international security. Not standards of living. Not wage inflation relative to cost of living. Not the deficit. Not crime in urban areas. Not poverty. Not social security solvency. Nothing.
Trump is absolutely in it for the ego rush of winning. Then again, he was the loudest voice railing against BHO questioning his birth certificate and his citizenship nearly 8 years ago.
Once again, our choice is the lesser of two evils. Whoever said they would choose an uninformed douche over a career liar got it right. Before being elected, they said Reagan would kill the country. Reagan surrounded himself with solid advisors and he turned out to be one of the most effective Presidents of the last 50 years.
By a nose, I think we are best served by Trump and hope he surrounds himself with lots of wisdom and has the foresight to know what he doesn't know.

@25 -- I seem to remember saying the same thing about the Presidential candidates (and us being royally fucked) every four years for the last, well, maybe, forever. Seriously, look at this who's who of scary losers, morons, cheaters, criminals and miscreants:
1956 Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican) – 457 Adlai Stevenson (Democrat) – 73
1960* John F. Kennedy* (Democrat) – 303 Richard Nixon (Republican) – 219
1964 Lyndon B. Johnson (Democrat) – 486 Barry Goldwater (Republican) – 52
1968* Richard Nixon* (Republican) – 301 Hubert Humphrey (Democrat) – 191 George Wallace (Ind.) – 46
1972 Richard Nixon (Republican) – 520 George McGovern (Democrat) – 17
1976 Jimmy Carter (Democrat) – 297 Gerald Ford (Republican) – 240
1980 Ronald Reagan (Republican) – 489 Jimmy Carter (Democrat) – 49
1984 Ronald Reagan (Republican) – 525 Walter Mondale (Democrat) – 13
1988 George H. W. Bush (Republican) – 426 Michael Dukakis (Democrat) – 111
1992* Bill Clinton* (Democrat) – 370 George H. W. Bush (Republican) – 168 Ross Perot (Ind.) – 0
1996* Bill Clinton* (Democrat) – 379 Bob Dole (Republican) – 159 Ross Perot (Reform) – 0
2000*† George W. Bush* (Republican) – 271 Al Gore† (Democrat) – 266 Ralph Nader (Green) – 0
2004 George W. Bush (Republican) – 286 John Kerry (Democrat) – 251
2008 Barack Obama (Democrat) – 365 John McCain (Republican) – 173
2012 Barack Obama (Democrat) – 332 Mitt Romney (Republican) – 206
Wow! How many times have I said to myself "this is the best we can do? And, yet, somehow the Republic survives. Seriously, from this vantage point looking backward, how many would you vote for again, if you could? Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Reagan? Is that it?? Goldwater, Ford, Dukakis, Mondale, Dole??? Are you kidding me?? Maybe this country just needs a new nominating procedure. Maybe the whole country should vote in the primary on the same day so that Iowa, New Hampshire and a handful of states don't have so much influence on the outcome?
I don't know -- God Bless America (and no place else)!

David Duke should STFU - fucking troll.
Trump is positioning himself as someone who has the will to change up the status quo - for many Americans a welcome position. Question is, if he wins, will Congress block him or allow it?
His speech was a tad negative for me -- would have been better if he had pointed out his positive vision for the future after his proposed changes.
In any event, the debates are going to be must-see-TV.
Oh yeah -- Cruz is a turd!

Prediction:
The Republican Party will never win another national election (i.e, the Presidency) with a candidate that is staunchly fiscally AND socially conservative. The far right has had undue influence on the Primary outcome since BHO so as to kill their chances to retake the White House (perhaps until this year). As long as Trump doesn't allow Pence to push him toward the right, he has a chance -- an outsiders chance.
If the GOP would simply leave the social issues to state's determination and focus on a fiscally conservative, pro-defense national platform, they could win in a walk-off. Legislating morality at the national level is an election-killer.
Oh yeah -- and Cruz is a scary turd. (Mic drop)
