The reason I think Afghanistan collapsed so quickly is that US leaders seemed to expect it to fall eventually - some saying in 18 months. Since the US was pulling support and expecting the Taliban to win anyway then what would have been the point in fighting at all? The Afghani's probably thought they were better off to surrender now without a fight to gain some good standing with the Taliban.
