These days it depends on the neighborhood. In NYC, the worst neighborhoods are in Brownsville (brooklyn) and most of the Bronx. HOWEVER, they don't go out of their way randomly starting trouble with a passerby. Even gang initiations pick on freshly minted gangsters from rivaling sets.
Police also NEVER help perception in that since they police themselves, they HAVE been caught lying about their numbers and what they do, sometimes a neighborhood looks worse than it is.
Your local news station is a blessing and a curse all for the sake of ratings (which are dying thanks to the internet) as they sometimes overhype and sometimes downplay severities of a neighborhood.
the majority race and those not black or Hispanic are too easily swayed and frightened by what they think is true, never do enough of their own research and since they don't bother to leave their bubble are content with information, misconstrued or otherwise. Kind of makes you question the whole stereotypes of "asians being smart".
Then racism is your biggest contributor to overblowing perception of demographic and geographic.

I believe there was a large scale test done where a black woman with a very detailed resume was denied 10,000 (yes, ten thousand) interviews for accounting related jobs and had 10 years experience. So she instead for the next 10,000 applications put in the optional category that she was white. Same application, just different race. Nearly all jobs requested her an interview. And were all similarly shocked when they saw a black woman show up. She did get a job but if that isn't an obvious example of white privilege.

@Meat I hear you but the majority of viewers for those stations are older people and they teach their youth the very same bad habits. I've been looking at this alternate news site however recently (it's on YouTube) and it details what the mainstream either don't or give very little time for (not tyt)

Jeez so much racism! And people wonder why black people don't need to spend as much on women as other non-black races have to. Unfortunately, I'd race comes into play for me as I hear hostility towards black folk is becoming instead of better across the seven seas. And I really wouldn't mind living in China too. Japan is too expensive, EU and Britain are in weird times and South Africa seems to have nothing but race relation issues.
I'd say Kenya since its decently developed and very inexpensive for me if I can bring my job anywhere with me. But I'd have a dual citizenship with good ol USA. Because even though the golden age is gone ( I wasn't alive during that time anyway), it's still the land of opportunity if you know where to look. Plus as a native, I know how to navigate it better than any other country.
