Sitting at Starbucks.

Starbucks announced it would block all porn access on its WiFi starting in 2019 - it's their company so I'm ok w/ that if that's their prerogative ...

But - they have even blocked all of YouTube where I can't bring up YouTube to watch a simple video - SMH - seems like overkill.

It's the problem with filters. A lot of software designed to protect kids from porn also filters out art or how animals reproduce.

Onion Routers, VPN?

At Viet Coffee they would never do that kind of filtering.

It’s their right to do as the want because it is their business. Hell, who buys Starbucks shit anyway?

The Republican - Libertarians on this site want freedom so long as it does not apply to Blacks, Latinos, or Poor People.

For these later there is Recovery, Therapy, and Finding God.

They're blocking Instagram also.

I clicked on the link in this TUSCL thread (https://www.tuscl.net/app/discussion.php…) which is a link to Clemson's QB girlfriend, and IG comes up but the pics don't

If I was of a mind, I’d give it a shot using my VPN. Might check sometime this weekend.

Even Instagram? That is really weird. Wouldn’t they want customers to take selfies with their drinks?

Viet Coffee places would never try to impose such restrictions.

^^^^^^ People, like our OP, probably like to watch all kinds of things. On the Internet there really are not black and white lines. And this idea that you can censor and punish people hurts people in all sorts of venues.

wait????@!!!!! So its wrong for the gov to set up laws to protect people from human trafficking and shit. BUT its okay for a private company to censor the internet just coz they're a private company.

wow thats great logic.

And it's not just Starbucks. United Airlines blocks access to porn too.

On my last red eye trip home from California I knew the flight was going to be about 6 hours so I had to do something to pass the time. The flight is rarely more than half full and most passengers sleep quite a bit of the flight.

I thought I had planned appropriately. I wore my baggiest pair of sweatpants so I could reach in easily and have plenty of room to play.

I got all set up to get down to business. Undid my seatbelt. Untied the drawstring. Set up my laptop on the tray table. ACCESS DENIED. WTF.

I called the stewardess over and asked her about it. She said that its a corporate policy because there are often kids on board and they decided it might be offensive to other passengers.

I was pissed.

Just for fun, I asked her if I might be able to access porn if I took my laptop to the lavatory so I could masturbate there. I kept a good poker face. She just dismissed me and walked off.

The guy across the aisle busted up laughing.

I've never been to a Starbucks. However there is one inside my Kroger grocery store. I rarely see anybody using it. The space could be better used to stock groceries. Same with their sushi bar.

Noticed that TUSCL is banned from our community rec center and also the library. Most likely to screen @Flagooner's offensive posts from the children.

Papi already pointed this out, but yeah... it's a private company. Their call.

Blocking YouTube sounds like an unintended consequence, though. Given the clientele at Starbucks, I suspect that YouTube will open up again at some point. That's just a guess, though.

At least some of this has more to do with liability rather than political correctness. Providers of free WiFi find themselves at least partially vulnerable if their bandwidth is used for pirating IP, trafficking illegal content (underage, snuff, etc.), and no company wants to find out that their WiFi was used as a platform to plan a crime or terrorist attack.

So, blaming it all on puritanism isn't entirely accurate.

Also, people complaining about restrictions on free corporate WiFi have essentially abdicated their right to complain about the "entitlement" mentality of others.

you can watch whatever your heart desires on your own dime, a corporate WiFi is not required to grant access if it doesn’t suit their business model.

@25 +1

I've never thought of thhs as being PC, more the company doing what they think is best for the bottom line.

BTW, I haven't checked in a long time, but the public library used to not block anything.

It is kinda lame that #1 people get their panties all in a bunch about some nudity or whatever and #2 that some people can't be trusted to have a little common courtesy and not take to too far. That's the world we live in though. While I support Starbucks right to do whatever they want with their internet it does worry me a bit that we're so quick to filter the internet. Its a bit of a slippery slope.

Good for them. It's their service. If you absolutely must pull up that shit in a public place, there is always cell service. As a parent to young children, I like the fact that my kids won't get exposed to creepy old dudes watching smut when I take them out for a treat. Honestly, I'm more than a little surprised that this is even remotely controversial.

Loco you’re a moron, if a private citizen or company blocks anything, it doesn’t amount to censorship at all, you’re free to patronize any company you like just as they’re free to keep you (understandably so) from entering their premises.
Simple example
If I own a strip club I clan permit access to anyone that I want as long as it’s not on a basis of gender, ethnicity, or religion. I can ban you just because I don’t like you, and I would.

If they block straight porn - it won’t make a difference. All those colon cowboys are watching gays in ass-less chaps while they sip their faggy lattes and Frappuccino’s - at Starbucks!

Block the goat porn and baloney smuggling porn and Starbucks will empty out quicker than CrazyJoe empties a McDonalds when he shits there!

It depends on state laws, but they can claim you're furnishing porn to minors.... some states will say it falls under voyeurism laws. Its stupid, like with pissing in public, if a pig wants to be a dick they can get you on indecent exposure and gross and lewd behavior and get you classified as a sex offender.

This idea of Trafficking has been overblow by more than 1000x. It is how they've gotten people to believe that prostitution should be seen as a major crime, almost like a terrorist threat, and that it is okay to censor the Internet when there is no proof on anything being unlawful.

I have no problem with them blocking porn. Public place. Kids shouldn't be exposed to that by weirdos.
But I hope TUSCL isn't blocked at Starbucks (I don't consider TUSCL porn, it's an informative adult site). I like to read this site while having a coffee there on Saturday nights, before I hit the bar (regular bar) for a couple beers.
If TUSCL is blocked, I'll just use the hotspot on my iphone.

I was at a different Starbucks today and was able to bring-up YouTube - I assume maybe they were just working thru some kinks the other day when I couldn't bring up YouTube (or Instagram pics).

I've had issues bringing up TUSCL on some restaurant WiFi's such as Olive Garden, Wendy's, and some others I can't think of right now - I go to a Cuban cafeteria inside a nearby Walmart that get's its WiFi from Walmart - I used to be able to connect to TUSCL via the Walmart WiFi but haven't been able to do so as of late.

So starbucks will let people shoot up and leave needles in all over the place so much there are stores considering putting used needle boxes. Let homeless or non-customers shit all over the place and destroy the bathrooms, but not let paying customers watch pornography in public where there could easily be minors or children in view. They are not the progressive coffee providers of the democratic party they claim to be and should be banned from California, New York, MA, Chicago, and Seattle especially. #Resist
