But as for the rest of us, when I walk into a bar or any public place, I get to control who I'm going to talk to or be around. Two-way block is essentially that... having control over who gets to interact with you in a gathering place.

If you find yourself unable to see or participate in a large number of TUSCL threads due to site rules, then the problem isn't "censorship" or two-way block.

One has a right to disagree with someone's opinion, not like their opinion, and even ignore their opinion - as far as I'm concerned one doesn't have the right to stop someone else from having an opinion.

Yes, but you can still create your own threads to express your views, or participate in other threads to express your views. It's not a gag order. But, it does prevent a user from inflicting themselves forcefully into every single dialogue.

Precisely as CIM wrote, it does not prevent you from expressing your opinion. Additionally, it minimizes aggressive or hostile commenting done by other members who are antagonistic towards the OP, and prevents threads from being derailed or drawn off-topic.

Last time we discussed this I brought up, as an analogy, the court ruling from July where Trump was prevented from blocking his critics on his Twitter account. Exactly the same issues: Trump pictures his critics as hostile assholes who are getting in the way of his agenda and his critics feel they should have a right to post dissenting opinions. Trump has something like 50 million followers on Twitter -- so using the argument that every private citizen has the right to post on their own Twitter account is complete nonsense.

Two-way blocking keeps minority opinions out of popular threads if the OP doesn't like another poster or doesn't want to be challenged. It's far worse than just having a competent moderator.

As I said it's founder's business and his choice. What separates TUSCL from other forums (like SW) is that we've been free to express are opinions without moderation. Makes it lively and interesting place.

As far as SJG, instead of ignoring him, there are about a dozen users who clearly enjoy humiliating SJG on a nearly daily basis. Some of those guys are in this thread. As I said yesterday, he's clearly got some severe problems and beating the shit out of him every day is the moral equivalent of a crowd beating the shit out of homeless guy for sadistic pleasure.

I used to be in favor of the two way block, but after seeing it in action I see some of random's points. As useful as it was for squelching off topic troll activity, some were starting to use it more broadly than that. As bad as the troll activity is on this board, I am not in favor of squelching the on topic dissenting opinions at will.

For me, all the broad allusions to greater free speech principles are ridiculous. This is a private board; keeping it at least vaguely on-topic instead of a toxic cesspool that potentially drives people from the site, is what I'd be doing.

That said, for me, the only time recently that the board got to the point that it was basically crippled was, IMO, when the Nicole and Icey trolls were basically dominating every main topic and taking every other thread off-topic, through sheer volume. They're the only ones I ever needed 2-way block for. They're gone, so even if we had it, I'd have no need for it until dougster or whomever gets extra time on his hands and fires up more high-volume trolls.

I'd strongly prefer standard moderation -- a short clear set of rules (e.g., "if you post a political thread anywhere but political, 1st offense is 1 week ban, 2nd offense is lifetime ban" "Everyone who joins SJG's organization gets 50% off VIP" etc.) that are enforced. Yes, I know, never happen. But you asked. (okay, you didn't, but I told you anyway)

Moderation is very time consumptive.

And often, like on TJA, the worst of the trolls are those with moderator powers.

This board has flourished because it has been quite open.

And I see Icey as one of the most valuable and intelligent members of this forum. Hope he returns.

Many of those same people cry about the amount of trolling. A troll doesn't derail a thread when the legitimate posters simply ignore those comments. They get derailed when "legitimate" posters engage in the back and forth.

Icey/Nicole clogged up the board, yet many of the posters in this thread interacted with them long after their intentions were clear. Reminds me of people who toss their dog scraps from the dinner table because it's begging, then complain that it begs at the dinner table. Sometimes you're entertained by your dogs company while you eat, fine go ahead and feed it. Don't turn around a cry because it begs when you want to eat in peace.
