I like the original, and I usually can't stand when somebody covers a "classic" in a different genre, and I most especially wouldn't have thought this would be any good at all, but somehow, it's just freakin' awesome. Listen to it on some good speakers, and turn them up a bit.
ime: You making a critique of music you don't like or understand is like me comparing two styles of woman's purses. WTF do I know about women's purses?
About the same as you know about modern metal IMO.
I know plenty about it it's the horrible shit that's been on the radio for years. I am stating my opinion of it, if you like it thats fine. Modern metal is worse than most metal but because i dont like it doesnt mean i dont understand it.we can conversate through PM if you like.
Freakin awesome. However, by way of context, I'm very high. And I'm in sexual ecstasy from an amazing session with video girl that we just finished. We are expanding our sexual horizons more than I thought we would. So Barry Manilow might sound good at this moment. But still a great version of a classic song.
The version posted by Sinclair sounds very similar to the original. In contrast, the Disturbed version shows much more independence and creativity. It also captures the spirit of the words in a unique way.
ime: I'm not saying you should LIKE modern metal! No one in my family likes it either. But these guys sell millions of albums and sell out large arenas, so you have to admit you just have a personal aversion to their music.
Can you sell out a large arena with your music?
Since you admit you see the genre as irrelevant to your personal musical interests, how can anyone take you seriously when you say they suck? You wouldn't know good modern metal frombad modern metal to begin with, so whatever you say on this subject is just wasted bandwidth.
Since we started with a Disturbed cover, here's Disturbed's version of Land of Confusion (a favorite song of one of my CF's) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YV4oYkIe…
BAD metal is like any bad music, but each genre has both virtuosity and complete crap. There's bad classical music too. I can see that some people have the mindset that if they don't get it, it must be bad. Not a very productive way to lead one's life.
Lana Del Rey - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, this is okay, for limited scenarios. Phrasing is quite different. A bit flat too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtHoBBCU…
Thunderstruck by Steve'n'Seagulls , okay, this is intended to be novelty music. In some live situations this would be entertaining.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4Ao-iNP…
Gov't Mule w/ Jackie Greene - Heart Of Gold , this is not a good recording, but if I was there I'd like it and appreciate it.

Rock covers are more interpretations on the original recording, than on the score or lead sheet. Everyone knows the original recording. Jazz covers are interpretations on a lead sheet.
I have a preference for electric guitars over acoustic guitars. It's not that I don't like acoustic guitars, it's just that I like electric guitars so much, that I find acoustic guitars to be a disappointment. So when someone can move something from acoustic to electric I'll always like it.
this song has too many covers to count and most of them should never have been done as i find the original artist much better. that said i do like the cover below
Two great covers of a wonderful Simon & Garfunkel song. I've always found Disturbed kind of . . . well, disturbing, but I actually prefer their version of "Sound of Silence" over the one by Bobaflex. Disturbed takes the song in an interesting new direction, whereas the other is much truer to the original. Thanks for the post, gmd!
Now in many genres covers do make key transpositions. In rock covers they don't seem to do this. I believe that this is because rock covers are more of an interpretation of the original recording, rather than on the score or the lead sheet.
If I had a keyboard instrument handy I could figure out the key for each of these. I suspect that the cover is just 2 semi-tones down.
I feel that there is another reason though. Drummers claim that drums are not tuned to any specific pitch, just until they sound right. Well, I disagree with them. I am convinced that they do end up getting tuned to specific pitches, and the reason I know this is just how much different of a feeling is created by rock music in each of it's common keys. And then it is not difficult to figure out what these specific pitches are.
A little bit of rock music is in F, and even less is in B flat. But usually rock music is played in the sharp keys, C through E. Just from studying sheet music, I believe that this started with the Beatles.
Very few people can hear absolute pitch. But almost everybody can hear relative pitch. So the songs create a mood specific to the key because of the role the percussion plays. So this would be another reason not to transpose for a cover.
Personally, I can't think of ANY cover I've loved more than the original. My guess as to why is that there are not that many songs I really love. Like, yes, and I've heard decent covers, but nothing I've loved.
Certainly a different type song than mention above, but a "cover" I could listen to everyday, and I have since I first heard it. Perfect for this time of year.
@Clubber: Do you really consider that to be a good rendition? Or the girl a good singer?
She has good range, but she was unsteady through much of the low part, off key at least twice that I heard in the upper register, and thin and shaky there as well. In addition, her enunciation leaves a lot to be desired, though if she's not a native English speaker, that can be forgiven.
Lots of unrealized potential. She should get a good voice coach.

It's closest to the Nina Simone version but the classic version by a The Animals will never be topped.
This is the only Dylan song where the cover is better than the original Dylan version.

I don't like this one nearly as much as the one I posted. For me, the music was kind of muddy, not as clear as the original.
I'm not a huge fan of metal in the first place, but there have been a few pieces over the years that I've enjoyed.
