"Trips from Stockholm to Gotland -- a popular vacation destination -- dropped by 96% over the Easter weekend, according to data from the country’s largest mobile operator, Telia Company. And online service Citymapper’s statistics indicate an almost 75% drop in mobility in the capital." This is an incredible amount of ingrained "civil obedience" that is not reproducible here. To whatever extent Sweden is successful -- and the jury is still out -- nothing close to these numbers are likely achievable anywhere else

I promised myself I'd stick to stripper and SJG organization talk here, but I'm a glutton for punishment :) There's a few things to keep in mind about the Swedish model: - Over 40% of people live alone. It has some of the lowest amounts of inter-generational households in the world - An enormous number of Swedes are working from home, over 90% in major companies, a huge amount in general (lost the cite, sorry! will find it) - There is near-universal access to Sweden's excellent healthcare system - There is a strong, cultural sense of civic duty, and confidence in the state. Swedes have high confidence in their politicians, who in turn have high confidence in citizens. The government has given suggestions, not orders, and based on that alone, public transit saw ridership fall 50%+. In short, part of what Sweden has done is replaced legislated lockdowns with government suggestions with voluntary guidelines that civic-minded Swedish citizens just tend to follow. Literally none of those things apply in the US (particularly the last one, which is arguably the MOST important), or any other country in Europe, for that matter, so there's no reason to think any other country would get the same results. Even with the unique Swedish cultural context, the death rate in Sweden per person is 5x and 9x, respectively, the most comparable countries; Norway and Finland, which both have lockdowns. Anyway, just a caution on projecting Swedish methods on the US, or any other country except Sweden. No chance Americans voluntarily reproduce what the Swedes do.

OT: What have you been watching (besides porn) during the lockdown?
I started watching Zerozerozero on Amazon Prime. It is a series (not sure how many episodes) about a cocaine shipment, starting from when Italian criminals buy it, it's journey through Mexico and trip across the Atlantic. So far, at least, it's a super interesting, complex look at the dynamics in Mexico, the American family brokering the deal, and the Italians. Definitely need to pay attention to keep on top of what's going on as the three stories all intermesh

Other news: final results on a small remdesivir study are still to be published and peer-reviewed, but word coming out of the study is they expect to show significant clinical impact. Good news if it holds.

You guys and your snide remarks. I happen to know sjg is doing far more important things than slacking with the likes of you all. To wit, he is hard at work putting together our organization, the one where incredibly hot chicks will let us dump loads in the for practically nothing. I am archiving this thread so sjg knows who not to invite to the organization. Right now, the only thing standing between us and incredibly success is a lack of hot chicks, any sort of organization, any money to speak of, men interested in joining, another bag of hot takis, and sjg's mom letting him out of the basement to do anything but throw the garbage.

    Trumps chances of re-election
Sorry -- to add in to londonguy's direct question, his handling of coronavirus, especially the skepticism on the front end and the inability to accelerate testing in the thick of it, will become issues. If he pulls the economy out somewhat before Nov, he might be able to minimize those issues.

    Breathe, breathe in the air
    Trumps chances of re-election
Given the right will stick with Trump, and liberals with go with Biden, the questions are: 1. where's the center going, 2. is the far left energized to come out for Biden? I have no idea about #2, other than to note that there are rumblings among progressives to "punish" the Democrats for not going with Bernie, by not coming out. But the center -- particularly women -- may end up the real question. My gut feel is that the center, including the parts that went with Trump last election, is going Biden unless he implodes due to his own bumbling, the sexual assault charges have legs, etc. His to lose.

Civil unrest over Covid lockdown in Lansing
"Those are probably redneck rightwing militias they have in that area" Looked like it. The gun and Confederate flags set lol. Between you and I, those are my peeps, but we have different perspectives on this one. LW, it was definitely expected... eventually. Not when you guys predicted it 4 weeks ago, but yes, if things aren't lifted, those incorrect predictions will definitely work themselves around to be correct. Doesn't take a genius to figure the furthest right and restless young people first. Still, with national support at 70%, we're talking at a relatively small minority... for now. The longer it goes on, the more people start squirming, which is why squandering these last few weeks instead of preparing for test&trace, etc., was such a disservice to the American people.

Yahoo.com article comments 8 to 1 in opposition to Covid lockdown
"Most of us will get it. We are just buying time to build up medical resources. I think there is some sort of misconception that this is just going away." That's right, we are buying time for a few things to happen, among them, being able to switch to a different strategy that doesn't require stringent lockdowns -- e.g. the one strategy we know works, test & trace. But if, for example, the time has been squandered, then expect slower release of the lockdowns in proportion to test scale. To be clear with you, I'm agreeing with you; I think the question is, given where we are with testing resources, at what speed can we back off. The faster the better, obviously. In other promising news, the potential drug pipeline seems to keep growing. There's a number of medications that are targeted at parasites (cheap and plentiful) that are being looked at, in addition to all those monoclonal antibody medications, etc.

GAmma, 100% agree that: 1. the economic damage is significant, 2. it's the president's job to lead us out of it. He's unfortunately hurt his credibility because such a critical part of #2 was to define and drive us towards the conditions by which this could happen as quickly as possible with the best possible tradeoffs
