@sfrsox: Yes, passport or passport card is required for entry into Canada. I don't believe they stamp your passport, if that matters to you (doesn't to me). @frustratedinTheUS: Agree, U.S. would be a much better place if pay for play were legal or tolerated like it is through much of Europe, East Asia, Latin America, Canada etc. Also, I've been hassled only once during entry by some overzealous asshole, back when I didn't have my story straight (still got in). Tell them you're visiting a specific family member in a specific city (have name, look up a phony address, just in case, but I've never been asked specifics). They might ask where you're staying and you can tell at their house or tell them a specific hotel (when asked this I've mentioned the hotel I've booked). If you take a suit with you, you can tell them it's for a wedding, which might add credibility (they'll ask if you're bringing a gift, tell them you're going to purchase a gift certificate when you get there). If you're entering from Detroit or Buffalo, you can also tell them you're just driving through (to Buffalo or Detroit) as a shortcut, which a lot of people do. All in all, it can be nerve-wracking at times, but have your answers to potential questions ready and it's no problem. I've never even been pulled aside for additional questioning or to have my car searched.

I stayed on the U.S. side my first couple of times going to TJ and stayed at the Motel 6 San Ysidro. It's cheap (I think it was $50-60 back in 2018) and walking distance to the border, closer to PedWest, so it's walking distance to the trolley.
