Negotiate before you go in and get an up-front agreement about what you expect, what is off-limits etc. - if the dancer is evasive, abort the mission and move on to the next dancer. This is still no guarantee because she could be lying, but at least it minimizes the chance of a bad experience.
Don't go too late at night because you may get cheated on your time.
Also, don't spend time drinking. The girls like to stop and re-fill your drink and chat your ear off in the process (unless you like that).
What gets a lot of people is that they don't know that they'll be asked to tip the dancer after the dance. They won't make this clear beforehand, but after the VIP dance is over, a lot of the dancers will say "Do you want to tip me?" And what can you say, "no"? That's how they get you.
Detroit is closer to Chicago. It is not as rich of a city as Houston, but the mileage is still top notch. Also across the tunnel to Windsor is where escorts are legal to come to your hotel room.
georgmicrodong: Technically you do NOT need a passport to enter Canada from US. You do need a passport to enter US. EVERYONE must produce a passport to enter the US, even returning US citizens. If you do not present such a document to US border control expect hours of grief. I have some considerable experience with international travel and US border control is now the most onerous I face. And, in my personal experience, land crossings are much worse than any other. I have spent countless useless hours at Blaine,WA. and Sweetgrass, MT. Entering Europe (UK, France, Greece, Italy, Sweden) is an absolute breeze in comparison.
For those who live in Michigan, you can get an "Enhanced Drivers License" from the Michigan Secretary of State Office to go back and forth from Canada to the U.S. if you don't have a passport. I believe it cost $45. For those who don't live in Michigan and can't get an enhanced license, you will need a passport to get back into the U.S.
At the SE Houston club where I am VIP I can enter the upstairs VIP or downstairs CR for free (normally $120). Usually I am meeting a girl via texting so its just a matter of going to the club, hooking up with her, and taking her to VIP or CR to fuck her. Same deal at a club like CF but $55 fee for not as private area.
I do not take gals to VIP unless extras are involved. You can ask a girl if she likes to play and then negotiate the service letting her know what it is you want. If she does not give extras in VIP then she probably is not worth that kinda money.
First you should have an idea that the girl you are taking to the VIP is willing to do the extras you want with you. If you dont know, ask her.
Negotiate for her time, for example $300 for an hour. You should have an idea of what price is average for your club. Set this amount in advance.
Take her by the hand, lead her to the room and together pick the best place for privacy. She will know the best place if you haven't been in there before. (Hey don't think you're the first guy she has been in the VIP with!)
"Re: Windsor, what's the deal with U.S. citizens crossing the border? Passport needed now?"
While a passport will ensure a quicker move back into the USA (from any other country) for sure, what you really need to prove is your country of origin and/or citizenship status, which a U.S. birth certificate will do nicely. The Canadians will look at whatever documentation that you have with you when you cross, but you don't really need a passport to get into Canada...just to get back into the USA on your return trip.
I'd suggest getting a passport ahead of time, but be aware that the new ones have an RFID chip in them that can be read from a short distance. I forget if the new chips need to be within a few inches of a chip reader or as far as 30-40 feet away.

"So, any tips for me on how to make the most of it?"
As others have said, you should absolutely negotiate upfront with a dancer before you ever enter a VIP/Champagne Room. Know ALL the costs upfront & what you will surely be getting for your money. Trying out a dancer with a LD or two beforehand is a great idea. As for having to by alcohol, usually you can just have them bring you whatever kind of drink that you want (even non-alcoholic), and sometimes a bottle of champagne (or a drink or two) just comes with the room charge. Every strip club is different in how they run things, so know before you buy!
I have to agree with those that say "test drive em first". Whether it's a table dance or a lap dance. 6 weeks ago, in an Atlanta club, somewhat known for extras, I got the up sell to VIP. I said "Do a table dance for me and convince me to go to VIP" She did. She went up my pants leg. The rest is history. She is a regular now.
Some of my most memorable times in private and I like to think for guy as well always take place when a expectation and negotiated price is discussed prior to heading back. as I have said in the past be certain when discussing that it is for a determined number of songs or until completion as this varies with different guys and it also depends on how much they have drank prior to heading back........
Art, MG: Thanks. It appears to be much the same as in my native Western NY, then. My employer may be creating a presence near Detroit, and if it does, I may want to see if I can insert myself into any excursions.

I was planning getting a lap dance first, to see how things go and then go from there to try to make sure I don't have a crap time back there.
Save your money and come to Houston. You gotta pay for a bottle (60-200) in some Houston clubs, but you'll get laid.
Kimi, unless you have money to burn VIP is nothing impressive
