HOUSTON - Investigators say Pakistani immigrant Danish Minhas hired Somali-born Nur Mohamed to kill his mother because he didn't want to follow her house rules. On what seemed like an average day at HISD's Lee High School, the buzz in the hallways centered on the two classmates arrested and charged with capital murder.
"I don’t believe it," said one high school senior. "I can't believe it."
Yet, Danish Minhas and Nur Mohamed are jailed and due in court Thursday morning for the murder of 43-year-old Tabassum Khan. Khan was Minhas's mother.
"Nur Mohamed confessed to stabbing Khan several dozen times," said Sgt. Brian Harris of the Houston Police Department.
According to police, Mohamed is a Somalian-born student who was recently caught with drugs on campus. His friendship with Minhas, a Pakistani-born senior who made good grades and worked in Lee High School's administrative office, blossomed in Spanish class.
On the surface, they seemed like an odd match. Classmates knew Mohamed as the guy who brought drugs to school. They knew Minhas as the guy who made the morning announcements over the campus intercom.
Even the Houston police knew of Minhas. On the day his mother was killed, Minhas was supposed to report to HPD Headquarters to interview for an internship. It would have been his second interview for the spot.
"Danish Minhas was in the law enforcement community," said Harris. "He received several leadership awards."
But according to police, Minhas confessed to recruiting Mohamed to kill his mother. Police found her dead in her apartment back in November.
The motive?
Investigators say Minhas simply didn't want to follow her house rules.
"These were not unusual restrictions- curfew, be home at night, stay off the freeway- very simple rules any parent that's responsible would ask their child to do," said Harris.

The Brooklyn high school janitor who caught two female language teachers in a state of conjugating bliss first thought the hot and heavy pair were students -- and that's why he alerted school officials, sources told The Post yesterday.
While the rest of James Madison HS was in the auditorium cheering on students as they performed in the annual "Sing" competition the night of Nov. 20, French teacher Cindy Mauro, 33, and Spanish teacher Alini Brito, 29, were brushing up on each other's foreign tongues, sources said.
Mauro, who lives with two other women, recently went punk, dying her hair pink, getting several new tattoos, and wearing tight, low-cut clothing, neighbors said.
"She would have parties until 3 a.m. with mostly female guests," one neighbor said. "There would be people coming in at all hours making noise."
Mauro had zero tolerance for off-color comments about homosexuality, students said.
"You know how kids are. If someone would say, 'You're so gay,' she would be, like, 'Don't do that, it's not funny,' " said senior Marteine Colon, 17.
She once warned students: "You might be offending me or you might be offending someone in my family."

In further revelations, one of Sweden's top celebrities claims she was approached by man acting on behalf of Woods about having an affair with the golfer.

One of America's top PR experts said his image would be tarnished forever after a string of lurid allegations.
Howard Rubenstein said: 'He is beyond PR redemption. He is in public relations hell right now. There is not a PR man on Earth who can restore.
'He's haemorrhaging; even a transfusion won't help. He can never re-establish that perfect image of a happily married family man. Never.'
He advised Woods to separate from his wife as quickly as possible. 'Who knows how many more women are going to emerge?,' he added. 'This could continue for a long time.'
