I don't watch TV nearly as much anymore but recently I watched a solid hour and yes every single commercial had a black person in it. Which I don't have a problem with it at all but it just seems like a big movement of companies to show how not racist they are. Blacks are only 13% of the US population. On my end I don't fuck black strippers to prove that I'm not racist, I fuck black strippers because it feels good when I put my dick in them.
After years of predominately white representation, it makes sense the pendulum would swing in the opposite direction. But, yeah, according to TV the modern American family now seems to be a Black Mom, White Dad, Trans Daughter, and adopted Asian Son. The Inuits need to hire a PR firm.
I agree that advertising in general has gone over the top "inclusive"... how many families do you actually know that are structure as such? Alienate the majority to cater to the vocal minority.
Yes, noticed this trend really gaining momentum last Holiday season as all the commercials about "family" getting together showed most biracial couples and often same sex couples with children. All fine with me in real life, but certainly seems like "homogenization" pandering by corporate America to show how very woke they've become.
I agree it doesn't make much sense that (with regard to race) 90% of commercials reflect a tiny segment of the viewing audience, but it doesn't bother me enough to negatively affect my buying decisions.
However, I haven't been to TGI Fridays since they aired this commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cojCZ_T… I'll never go there again due to one second of a commercial.
Ha ha yes. And a lot of interracial couples. Doesn’t bother me but interesting. I think the people making the commercials have different sensibilities than most the potential customers.
Remember JS, 9 out of every 10 white people were white in America in the 1950’s. The country wasn’t quite as diverse as it is today. And I’m just pointing out something that is extremely obvious, if we aren’t even allowed to bring it up this country is in trouble. Watch commercials today and tell me it’s not true.
It's honestly tricky for marketing departments to be inclusive without looking tryhard. Especially if you are running an ad with one person in it, you can't cover every base at once.
Across the industry there definitely was an Oh Shit moment during this summer's protests.
I've definitely noticed most media aimed at young people likes to have biracial leads.
^^^ no one said it was problematic, however it has become noticed to the
Point where it is overdone to the degree where some think it’s pandering to a select few and therefore backfiring on its intent. Over selling the ethnic thing backfires on so many levels.
I've got no problem with commercials which provide a realistic depiction of America's diversity, and at least a modicum of appropriate targeting to the demographic audience. What I do not tolerate is Nike, Gillette, and these other cockbreath woke corporations telling me how to think, how to vote, what my behavior should be. Make a product, sell it on its merits, and go the fuck away.
Tammany. Make your mind up. You claim you don't find it problematic but also claim it is excessive. Hence problematic enough to get a pejorative reaction out if you.
You them claim you jave no problem with a realistic portrayal of diversity. Thus alluding to quotas. So its okay if 3 out if 10 people on tv are black? Or perhaps if a single person has a black grandparent? How would you like to see that? But of course you only said that to attempt to not appear racist
The fact that you notice diversity in a negative light says enough about you.
People say “we have to have an open discussion about race” are the same people who like to call people racist if the observe and express something that isn’t 100% woke.
Btw - you know who very rarely talk about race? Asian Americans. They’re obviously not white, but just quietly focus on family, education and hard work. And they kick ass and don’t worry about “systematic racism”
Asian Americans are racially conscious. Your white privilege shields you from having to be aware of their plight. But racists love quoting the model minority mythos.
Bigotry and racism are pointed out. I don't see a problem with that. Arw bigots sensitive snowflakes who can't handle tge truth?
I've said this all along. All these corporations are out her screaming BLM, we support LGBTQ and all that.
I'd like them to be forced to hire what they support. Oh, you support BLM, then you need to have at least 13% of your workforce as African American, since 13% of America's make up is African American right? Oh you don't? Then you're not really supporting the cause are you?
To be honest, if I watch a commercial, I don't notice if they are green, purple or other colors. I usually walk out of the room to do something else if I don't skip the commercial with fast forward or a pause and then fast forward.
The only thing that caught my eye on a commercial in the past year was two men kissing. I only caught it in passing and didn't really want to see it. my opinion is do it at home all you want but I don't care to see it.
They think people don't notice the disparity or something. Its really kind of weird. We go from blacks under represented 30 or 40 years ago to massively ststistically over-represented today in commercials.
Hypocrisy abounds - “Liberal Lioness” Ruth Bader Ginsburg had one black Law Clerk in 25 years on the bench and few minorities of any kind - about 12%.
Brett Kavanaugh’s diversity of hiring law clerks is outstanding- one of the best - more than double Ginsberg’s. He actively encourages black law student to apply and has hired the most minorities - including African Americans
But Ginsberg wanted to legislate Affirmative Action from the bench (not the role of a SC justice) and force hiring quotas on private employers ).
Yes, definitely noticed a big shift in all forms of media. Diversity has been reflected and fairly inclusive in ads in my opinion but it was swung way more toward anyone of color, overweight now more so, and mixed families etc.
Perhaps the lamest example that I saw recently was a promotional email for an industry conference. The ad included a picture of a young, cute black girl with big, puffed out hair. When I scrolled down to look at the speakers it was three white women in their 40s/50s.
It's over the top noticeable. Almost every single commercial today featuring a woman and a man will portray the woman in the decision-maker role (e.g. signing a contract with a minority female bank representative while the man has a baby in his arms and watches from the sideline) and I would say about 70-90% of ads since the summer of 2020 now feature blacks in leading roles. Black women in particular seem to be in 50-60% of ads. They are about 6% of the U.S. population.
The real question is will this bring about the "equity" that the woke corporations say they want to influence? Does racial harmony and gender harmony get achieved if you constantly portray whites and men like losers and excessively overrepresent minorities? Is the "turnabout is fair play" argument (i.e. getting revenge from the 1950s) really the best approach?
If the goal really was racial/gender harmony, then one would think the right approach would be to represent people more or less proportionally and not portray certain groups (whites/men) as the butt of every joke.
The black supremacy approach being used by the woke corporations could backfire.
I used to be a fairly regular customer at TGI Friday's but haven't been there in about 2 years since they aired a commercial with two men kissing each other.
So you're saying most commercials have ONLY black people?
Suppose most of your customers have brown eyes, but 13 percent have blue? Do you say "I'll have a blued and a brown eyed person in my ads to show I appreciate all my customers"? Or "13 percent isn't a lot, fuck them, I don't really need their money"?
Without black people, we'd all be fucking singing along with Mitch Miller. They are featured in many ads because they punch above their weight in contributing to popular artistic culture and fashion.
And, although overt minstrel shows are dead, the concept is still subtle present.
I only watch commercials during the superbowl. And the only commercials I see online are the loud volume ads before the next xvideos selection plays, anyone know how to block those?
Many commercials also feature gay couples. While data varies, the percent of the population that is gay is in the 1%~3% range but, when surveyed, young people believe that 20% of the population is gay. The overrepresentation of the gay population in media is the reason.
To the OP: Correct. Corporations catching the next virtue signaling rage and seeking to make a few bucks. Pretty funny actually. It's like being in New Orleans and looking at billboards.
Icee the problem with your logic is when it comes to say, hiring practices in the finance tech industry, or college admissions you will be up in arms crying racism if they don’t go out of their way to hire extra minorities. But if its sports or tv commercials you’ll say the minorities worked hard and worked for the position. So if im understanding you right, you believe it’s possible for some specific races to excel and perform well in sports, entertainment, and tv commercials. But you don’t believe it’s possible for some other races to excel in coursework, college admissions, or finance tech industry work. In those places, only racism is responsible for any disparities in hiring practices relative to race or gender. People can excel at basketball via skill and practice, but it isn’t possible to excel at finance or tech work.
I pay less than zero attention to any commercials, and if you asked me two seconds what the commercial was for I often couldn't tell you, as far as the amount of diversity in any given commercial, that's another thing I'd never notice, as it doesn't mean shit to me, after all I'm not an actor looking for work.

WTF! I want to see some white hotties during the commercial breaks when I watch the Soul Train awards!
Those Tyler Perry shows have some delicious dark chocolate - but it would be nice to see a hot white babe with a booty from time to time too!

But I really hate the constant Medicare commercials

No stereotypes there! A Chinese dry cleaner!

I'm curious as to why some think inclusivity and diversity are bad though

Someone better jump on their high horse and post about this awful lack of diversity.
If Madison Avenue is any barometer, America's future will be that of South Africa.

I mostly don't care about this because the demographics of the ads I'm already not watching do not affect me.
But I also don't care because any ad director in their job for over 2 years has had their soul completely replaced with cynicism and bitterness.
