Mrs. Hornibastard received a phone call from Indonesia late yesterday that kept her on the phone jabbering incessantly for more than an hour in our formal, front living room.
When she finally came out, her mood was quiet and somber. Our kids had already gone to bed when Mrs. Hornibastard began to sniffle and announced that “Yuni is dead.”
I was not expecting this.
At first I wondered if Covid-19 was to blame. Or had Yuni died in an automobile accident?
The truth was worse.
Yuni took her own life.
She had recently gone to Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city, where she planned to open her first convenience store outside of the kampung. There she met and fell in love with a young man from Holland.
Things were apparently going great and it seemed that Yuni was finally destined to be married. Her new boyfriend also agreed to co-invest in Yuni’s new business venture.
Then he disappeared with a substantial amount of her money.
Yuni leapt to her death from the roof of a high rise apartment building in suburban Surabaya.

OMG. Very tragic indeed. I am very sorry to hear of this. I enjoyed your stories of Yuni hiking.
