"True Grit" by Charles Portis. You've probably seen the movie version starring John Wayne, Glen Campbell and Kim Darby as Mattie Ross. The book is better than the movie.
Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett - pretty epic.
Also loved True Grit by Portis. Movie version by Coen brothers with Jeff Bridges as Rooster was better than the John Wayne version. Both good though.

The Viking Spirit by Daniel McCoy. If you're into Norse Mythology (whether you're starting off or a veteran), it's a excellent read.
