ELYRIA — An Elyria man and Avon Lake woman were charged with violating the state’s "stay-at-home" order and myriad other charges following an altercation at the Subway and Convenient on Chestnut Ridge Road.
Jeffrey Wheeler II, 25, Elyria, and Precious Bailey, 24, Avon Lake, had started arguing in the Convenient Food Mart around 2:15 p.m Saturday, according to police. The store owner intervened and told the pair to leave the store. Wheeler reportedly attempted to get Bailey to leave the store, but she refused, telling the owner she didn’t feel comfortable with Wheeler.
After the store owner threatened to call police, the pair left and headed toward Subway.
Subway employees told Elyria police the pair came into the restaurant around 2:20 p.m. and began physically and verbally fighting one another. The employee pushed the silent hold up alarm out of fear for other customers’ safety. When Bailey ran toward the exit, Wheeler allegedly grabbed her by her hair and began dragging her through the parking lot toward a silver Ford Focus.
Officers found the car when they arrived, its windows were down and the engine was on. The front driver side door handle was broken off and the key was broken off in the ignition.
After searching the area, police saw a couple matching Bailey and Wheeler’s description walking on South Abbe Road near Delaware Avenue around 3:30 p.m.
Once spotted in the 700 block of Case Avenue, Bailey and Wheeler ran and jumped a fence. Wheeler was found hiding behind a car on Purdue Avenue and Bailey was found in the homeowner’s shed.
Wheeler was charged with abduction, inducing panic, domestic violence, assault, obstructing official business, resisting arrest and violating the stay-at-home order.
