That’s the issue. The whole world is all hell bent because they think puto means fag. FIFA is even going to penalize team Mexico if the fans chant puto at the next game. The literal meaning is male prostitute. When we call someone an asshole, we don’t literally sphincter. We mean dumb ass or fucktard. Same goes hear according to my Mexican friend.
Using the word "puto" is gay.
Bad language at a sporting event, how dare they?
Who would expect a chant involving a sexual reference might occur during a soccer game?

This issue is about advertising dollars, not morality. FIFA makes a big stink about homophobia, but they certainly felt comfortable taking money from host nation Russia. They also granted the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, a nation which punishes homosexuality with up to 7 years of imprisonment. Basically, FIFA sucks out thousands of dollars from Mexico then pats themselves on the back for virtue signaling to Coca-Cola.
The people who run FIFA are the real putos.
