The dumbing down of America has been an on-going agenda of elitist, liberal groups (such as the Ford Foundation) since the 1950's. I think it's finally working.

Motorhead (sigh): Liberals and conservatives BOTH have been dumbing down America. The GOP rejects ANY science that conflicts with their political views as we see today in congress. They already "know" what the "truth" is and then try to gather evidence to support it, while rejecting anything that contridicts it. Liberals are equally to blame however. They are afraid to challenge students and allow them to fail once in a while in order to teach the lessons only failure can bring. Liberals are afraid if a child struggles he will somehow be damaged. The "everyone gets an award" mentality is counterproductive to building leadership and my liberal brethren are wrong with this approach. Anyone who says it's just "liberals" who are to blame for dumbing down education are really just proving my point: they are just dumbing down the problems with education in our country, but looking at the issue from just a political point of view instead of taking a broader perspective.

Poor people have been voting for Democrats for the past fifty years..and they are still poor-Charles Barkley.

Dice: "The weak enslave themselves" is a poor analogy. As Jesus said, there will always be poor, especially in a capitalist economy because there will always be lazy people who don't do what it takes. For there to be no bottom class of people you need a socialist economy and a communist government, but if you do that EVERYONE is poor so it's obviously not a solution. My "liberal" take on it is since we are the richest and self proclaimed 'most moral' country in the world, we can manage to keep our poor from dying from starvation, or bleeding to death in the street because a drunk driver hit them and they have no insurance. I call this "compassion". I suppose that's why I'm a liberal.

P.S.: I really like Barkley a lot even though we might disagree on this issue. The way he called out Derrick Rose a few years back for being a coward really hit home with me since I also had that opinion. The fact Barkley says what he thinks in general, with out being PC, while still being polite (unlike Trump) shows a very thoughtful and intelligent man.

Rockstar, My comment was kind of a joke. But I saw you had posted and couldn't resist throwing a little jab at the liberals. :) I applaud your reply though. No doubt both sides are certainly to blame. And I totally agree with you about "everyone gets an award". That just drives me crazy.

^^ Yes, if we could leave partisan politics out of government we'd get a lot more done, but unfortunately our system is based on it. I do not have a better solution outside of term limits.

Dice: You are not lazy. 16 hours a day is brutal. My point, which you missed, was that ANY society will have a class of people who do not live up to your standards. So the real question is: what do we do with them? With about 95% employment, we have only 5% not making money and a percent of them are just between jobs. As the greatest nation in the history of the world, can't we at least help a little to keep the most desperate segment of our society alive? Or are you in favor of "The final solution to strengthen the strain" and just let them die?

Today Oct 3: I call this "compassion". I suppose that's why I'm a liberal. August 27th: I'm neither caring nor sensitive. com·pas·sion noun: compassion synonyms: pity, sympathy, empathy, fellow feeling, care, concern, solicitude, sensitivity, So which one is it? Swallowed by your own words, typical two faced hypocritical lib drivel !

Why should anyone care? This place is, first and foremost, a troll dumping ground. As this place is currently managed, nobody can expect anyone to take posts on this board seriously enough to make the effort to check spelling and grammar.

rickdugan, "Why should anyone care?" As an older guy, I see a dumbing down trend of our society. That can not bode well for our continued existence.

^^^ The question is whether the grammar and spelling snafus that are so common on here are really a result of "dumbing down" or simply apathy. I'm guessing that it is some of both. For example, I've made more than my fair share of spelling and grammar mistakes here and it is not due to a weak grasp of the English language. In fact, I've been published in periodicals that people pay to read. But when I have a random thought that I want to throw out on this board, I just don't care enough to vet my posts (or for that matter share much of what I do and see in clubs anymore) before submitting them and I'm sure that I'm not alone in this. That's what happens when you let a board turn into a troll Romper Room. It is the lowest common denominator effect in action.

The leftists just don't get it. When minorities fail to score well on standardized tests, what's their answer? "The tests must be racially based so let's do away with with tests". Not, "let's try to do a better job of teaching our kids proper grammar". Or worse yet. Some states have different benchmarks based upon race. For example, for a school in Virginia to remain in good standing, 82% of Asians must pass, 68% of whites, but only 48% of blacks must pass standardized tests. Lowering the bar does not fix the damn problem. Liberals. SMH.

Rick, I really don't think anyone really cares about grammatical errors or typos here on TUSCL. I think the bigger concern is that this sort of thing is finding its way into business e-mails and even resumes. The young folks say "I spell it this way on Facebook" and pretty soon they think its normal to spell "with" "wit" on business correspondence.

Motor: I think minorities score poorly on standardized tests because as a group, too many have no interest in education so they just aren't as 'book smart'. I have other suspicions that aren't exactly politically correct, like poor prenatal care which has been shown to lower IQ, and the lack of parental interest in their lives also leads to poorer achievement. By definition, an IQ cannot be racially biased or it wouldn't qualify as an actual IQ test. I wonder if minorities score lower on these?
  • NinaBambina
Standardized tests are bias in the sense that they are designed for people of typical "american" culture and some races (blacks, Latinos) have cultural and language barriers, whether the language barrier is explicit or just because of colloquial differences. A test isn't designed in ebonics, whereas that way of speaking is environmentally learn.
  • NinaBambina

Learned* To continue, minorities who do poorly on standardized tests are generally already at the bottom of the socio economic scale. The poorer the school, the worst the test scores. I always do exceptionally well on standardized tests but I am a good test taker and my parents raised me to be learned and articulate. Not everyone has that benefit.

"The poorer the school, the worst the test scores." the word is "worse". the "worse" the test scores. i swear education in America is absolutely the worst.

Clearly you can tell that I can put a sentence or two together and know that I meant "worse*" and not "worst." ...but I'm flattered you took the time to pick my post apart. Thanks!
  • NinaBambina

Education in America isn't "the absolute worst" by any stretch but it certainly isn't the best, especially in comparison to other developed nations. My high school was definitely lacking plus I never could pay attention unless something really interested me. I had a 0.8 gpa my freshman year. Lol. I only got into all the universities I applied to because of my ACT and MME scores.

"the word is "worse". the "worse" the test scores. i swear education in America is absolutely the worst." Doctor Phil doesn't capitalize the first word in sentences. He doesn't capitalize "I." And he placed the period outside of the ending quote mark. Geez.
