Campus Protests

Apologies if this belongs in politics, but I’m watching the news of protests on the campuses of Columbia and Yale. I would be really pissed if I was paying Ivy League tuition (>$80K/yr) for my kid to attend one of these prestigious schools, and see these assholes disrupting the educational process, and intimidating the other students by dressing up like terrorists.

The obnoxiousness is the point. These kids have been told their whole lives how amazing and special they are, when they've only learned the skill of pleasing authority figures, many of whom are aging radicals themselves. Now, free of the civilizing influence of parents who had to pay a mortgage or raise children, they are moldable clay in the hands of professors who are similarly isolated from the real world. These students spout nonsense like queers for Palestine, when these green haired, half shaved idiots would get imprisoned or hanged in Gaza for it. They are ungrateful for what western civilization and capitalism have provided them, so they denigrate them at every opportunity. This won't stop them from begging for capitalists to pay off their loans when they major in something useless and can't get a job.

My cousin's kid is in Yale. He was told by his economics prof that it was his duty to take out student loans even if his family did not need them. That is how "government wealth" is redistributed to the needy. It was also his duty to never pay a dime back because that just put the "government's money" back with a government that has no legal right to it in the first place. He was supposed to use the money to support "just causes". Besides, if the government wants the money so bad "they can just print more." This is a freaking ECONOMICS professor!

Yeah my taxes are not paying for this fucking bullshit. Something has to change. Protest what you want (not shutting down streets, bridges, stopping ambulances, that's all illegal) but let them do that with their money. You take the money out of the game and this shit ends real quick. Then all of sudden you can't protest all day and night anymore because you got to wake up for work in the morning like the rest of us do. You grow up real quick.

These protests are even more stupid that the occupy Wall Street where all the protesters where bitching about corporate greed while they’re on their iPhones and Mac computers not realizing 3/4 the products they were using were publicly traded at the very institution they were protesting.

It looks like the State Department is about to apply sanctions on part of the Israeli Defense Forces because they are violating human rights. https://www.axios.com/2024/04/20/us-israel-sanctions-idf-west-bank I doubt that this would have happened without the protests you describe. You may not like it, but I don't think you can argue that the kids are completely ineffectual.

I used to support the concept of "elite education" and, although I didn't go to an Ivy League school, I did get in to one and turned them down for a Small Liberal Arts College instead. I had an excellent experience, graduated with an excellent education and a fairly useful BA in the mid-1980s. Since then (really, it started before then) I've seen such a politicized shift in the priorities of higher education I just can't figure it out any more. David Lodge wrote a novel largely about "tenured radicals" in the late 80s, early 90s -- professors of Marxism who only ever wore the latest fashions and the most expensive lambskin gloves, etc.. I tried to get a Ph.D. in literature but couldn't stomach the bullshit about "marginalized communities" and "alternative readings". I still believe that a good education is the foundation of a democracy, but the damn elite tenured radicals aren't providing that education. The last straw for me was when the three college Presidents really dropped the ball before the Congressional committee recently. Not only were they doltish and inept, but also they were UNPREPARED. You could figure they'd be politically correct and therefore the target of right wing representatives' cross-examination, it was obvious this would be forthcoming, but they didn't PLAN AHEAD FOR IT. Then the one from Harvard turned out to have plagiarized her damn doctoral dissertation. I don't feel that justice will have been served until she not only loses her academic posts, but also GIVES BACK all that she supposedly earned in the interim on the strength of that false document. I never got the Ph.D., because I did NOT write bullshit, and I don't feel that it's enough that she and her sort get to keep their nice houses and nice cars when I'm working hourly, harder than they ever had to, and still don't own a home (the down-payments probably went to Minxie and Scarlet, actually). I still vote Democrat, mostly because I can't stomach the Orange Monster and know he's just P.T. Barnum (or Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes) in a newer suit, but a few more of these escapades and it'll turn me into a damn Maga moron. I value REAL progressive politics, and don't agree with the property-or-else assumptions behind current Republican policies, but the Democrats aren't true progressives and the campus protesters certainly aren't, they're just fascists trying to kill all the heteros instead of trying to kill all the homos like they did in the 30s and 40s. If we had real labor-representation, and "progress" rather than corporate shilling on both sides of the aisle, I think America's traditionalists (who currently find most of the more balanced Republicans appealing) would realize that a lot of progressive politics (without this LGBTQ politically correct bullshit) is probably in their best interests. I'm for the Scandinavian model thank you, not just because their women are hotter. Meanwhile, I just gotta be stunned at LGBTQ for Palestine.

LGBTqxyzzzzzzzzzzz for Palestine.... at some point leading up to the above stupidity the development of these kids' critical thinking skills just halted and went splat at a stop sign or something. does this happen just from the first semester of college freshman year? i guess over time maybe 10 out of a 150 of these kids might see some semblance of light and then realize and go, what am i doing? this is retarded shit. the point of causing genocide of one group in order to prevent the genocide of the other may just be a little too deep and incomprehensible for those 150. higher levels of critical thinking will be required to figure this point out. over time maybe 2-3 out of that group kinda figures it out. ahh the last thing i really want to have to worry about is one of these 150 loons learns how to make and detonate bombs under cars and buses. but then again i'm actually surprised it hasn't happened sooner, especially in nyc.

^ LGBT* for Palestine. I'd offer them a round trip to check out anywhere in the ME including Gaza for Spring Break. Then see if they returned. Fake college IDs are being issued to rioters to allow then access to the private school, like Columbia. The cops can enter your house if they have been tipped off to domestic violence or see/hear it. Same can be applied to these private "colleges". They are openly supporting Hamas and Death To Israel and America. This gives voters and idea of what Democrats have done to public ed and colleges with indoctrination. Arrest them: if there are here on a visa, deport ASAP. Americans at these schools had best be expelled, like Omar's kid was at her school who was rounded-up this week rioting at Columbia with a fake college ID. The NYC justice turnstile is working overtime, Who allows this SHIT! I saw one video of a masked girl banging a metal dish on a rail and yelling an a Jewish guy "Israeli PIG!" He laughed. He should have gone to the nearest deli of a BBG Pulled Pork sandwich and given it her. WOW, the would be priceless. Donors need to dry-up donations to the non-profit "schools". The "Chancellor" at Columbia knew exactly what to say in Congress as he MIT, UPenn and Harvard babes were roasted. What was missing - why she didn't crack down on the first to yell "From the River to the Sea", and now they openly say they support Hamas. If they said they supported ISIS all Hell would rain down on them from the FBI/MiB. Hamas is a solid 100% murderous terrorist regime just like ISIS that should be treated the same.

I’m still scratching my head at all this. Does anybody have any ideas what is driving a lot of these attitudes? I know admission to elite universities is still more competitive than it used to be a couple of decades ago. I know a few years back, the universities got crap for their Asian quotas, that persist to this day. And from what I’ve gathered, the Jewish population at Ivy League schools are a lower percentage than they used to be. Is there a chance a lot of this is motivated by a declining amount of cushy spots/opportunities out in the “real world” (like Wall Street, etc) where the Ivies are supposed to feed students to…and anti-Semitism is the way some students are trying to push out their would-be competition? This isn’t a rhetorical question, I’m just wondering.

^its called the victim culture, proliferated by the ubiquitous media and people having too much time on their hands consuming media. Youth have been brainwashed to thinking anything you can do to garner attention, even negative attention, is valuable. Since creating polarizing view points is the low hanging fruit of attention seekers(we know who they are), the only way to control it is to limit consumption of crappy media but that east into our freedom of speech rights. United we stand, divided we fall. Everything the media is doing is trying to divide our values of a country. Consciously determining how you can make your own life better and get to work is harder than botching anout tye current situation, but that type of knowledge comes with experience that our youth lacks from having too much time on their hands. Gotta have a works project administration to put these kids to work so they’re time is occupied with productive outlets!

@nicespice, I hear your question. I also wonder at the larger demographic shift that is feeding the campus-radical phenomenon. Your suggestion about dwindling cushy-spots after graduation (rise in meritocracy-based appointments, desire to stop using ONLY the seven Ivies as the source feed, etc.) is certainly part of it. Mate27 mentions Victim Culture, which is definitely part of this phenomenon, but I can't really tell if it's the cause or the effect. There will always be clueless agitators among the young, and sometimes they do good things (Voting Rights Act) and sometimes they do stupid things (German National Socialism), but I think our present wave is indeed of a different flavor. F.e. we have people here wrongly thinking Biden is senile, or that Trump is mentally stable, when licensed physicians can certify otherwise on both counts; as long as such extreme willingness to abandon reality is prevalent, and such extreme willingness to "invent new facts," then the flat-earthers will have their way on EITHER side of the aisle. To me, "the center cannot hold" is really the explanation (cf. Yeats "Second Coming"), and I strive to admit my own side's faults even as I indicate the faults of the other. In 1775, previously 1774, 1773, 1772, and on back through a host of grievances, the best-educated and most-propertied leaders had gotten together to try to address abuses of power. Now everyone thinks he's as competent as any one of the Founding Fathers and thinks his spur-of-the-moment protest is equivalent to a decade of Colonials' legally supported petitions and documents appealing to the King.

Jews -- bottom of the totem pole for four thousand years and still going strong! (BTW if you need to ask, I vote "progressive" when I can find it in the USA, and otherwise find some sensible planks to the platforms of both the rational Democrats and the rational Republicans, and believe the MAGA and Trump Republicans are not nearly rational at all, they're simply stupid and don't even know that the President can't openly break laws, certainly not as official stated Border policy, though I am not a huge fan of Biden, he is too corporate and old-system for me).

Truth check: There is no correlation between modern day liberal democrat antisemitism and the historical Nazi Party of WW2. Truth check: Here's what Pres. Eisenhower really said: https://remember.org/facts-aft-lib-eis.html https://lidblog.com/horrors-ohrdruf-concentration-camp/ Ivy league universities have become a hotbed of liberal groupthink, intolerance, hate, and enforced conformity. As these universities allow the staff and faculty to brainwash, indoctrinate, and matruculate the next generation of educators and thought leaders, this wrong-headed thinking grows and spreads. It literally becomes the woke mind virus. We need a successive series of disruptive leaders like Trump, Paul, LA Sen. John Kennedy, and Cruz to push back and dismantle the generational damage done, so that more rational minds can take over and make things right.

Well, I know better ape, this rick thinks you have the answer to the question of whether this should have been posted in the politics board. For future reference, ask yourself this question: if I post this topic, what is the likelihood that skifredo will post some rant about leftists or democrats or 1984 or some nonsense? Now I realize that there is an approximately 5% chance that Skifredo will post that shit regardless of what you post. But here is the thing to remember: when Skifredo posts those rants he jacks off. As soon as you realize this you will want to inject yourself with bleach to get the picture of a masturbating fredo out of your brain. @Bookguy: 1. You're a liberal. You disagree with me about the merits of Republican politicians. Fair enough 2. The demented old loser attributed a direct quote to Eisenhower which Eisenhower never spoke. President Eisenhower was too great an American for his memory to have to suffer the demented projections of a bitter old man. 3. You like to act like an educated, literate poster, so be sure to read both links in their entirety. Eisenhower was a great speaker and an excellent writer. Our politicians do not create prose like that anymore, not since Reagan. Nothing cited by Eisenhower in those articles can be misconstrued as "some son of a bitch will say it never happened." That is a child's interpretation of a very insightful recognition from then-General Eisenhower that what they were witnessing in the camps was so terrible as to be beyond the scope of normal human comprehension. His fear of future holocaust denial was rooted in a sane person's inability to imagine another human's ability to perpetrate such UNBELIEVABLY (key word there) inhumane cruelty on a fellow human being. 4. Cruz, Kennedy, and Paul are all mainstream Republicans. Trump is admittedly to the right of them. The antisemitic activists and their idols in the squad are all mainstream democrats. These are not the fringes.

I grew up in a university town, in an extremely liberal neighborhood that housed a lot of Jewish professors. A lot of their kids my age are niw teaching at universities themselves all over the country. Howard, Arizona State, Kansas, Miami to name a few. I wonder what their thoughts are on all of this? Are they some of the Jewish people out there supporting the Palestine cause? I still get so agitated when people chant “death to America.” Leave then? For Columbia, it was "15+" (source: Columbia's student paper) Jewish students of the "more than 100" students arrested (source NY Post). Columbia's undergraduate population is 23% Jewish (source Columbia's admission site). I'm not sure how that 23% figure changes up or down when Barnard is included. That doesn't seem out of line with the national figure of 38% of American Jews oppose the war (released in a poll this week). Anyway--I was really just trying to give a bit of clarity to shailynn's musing. This board has a whole lot of PLs who are either Jewish or have many Jewish friends. They'll all have lived experience of what every-day opinion is towards Israel's current behavior. @twentyfive's personal account is the best real life report we've had.

By scale of population, unprovoked nature, and horror, there are many parallels to be drawn between the attacks on the United States by al Qaeda on 9/11 and the 10/7 attacks on Israel by Hamas. At first, I was wondering, "Is this what happens when a generation grows up with no personal recollection of terrorism on their home soil?" It has been 23 years since that day. No one under the age of 23 grew up without a parent, uncle, or older sibling because of what happened. Those of us old enough to watch it on TV understand it even better. The fact is, there were plenty of attacks in the US by Islamist terrorists during the Obama administration- the Pulse Nightclub shooting, Fort Hood, San Bernardino and many more. However, the criminally complicit mainstream media collaborated with the dishonest Obama admin to portray those as gun violence instead of Islamist attacks. Even the Fort Hood shootings were classified by the FBI as a workplace shooting. There are orphans from the Americans killed in Benghazi, but the media and democrats lied constantly that it was a protest which grew out of control. When it dropped off the news cycle and people stopped caring, then they admitted that it was a coordinated terror attack, "It's not true. It's not true. It's old news." To some extent, this is what happens when it has been a generation since a major terror attack. Only, it has not been. This is what happens when the media and the government repeatedly lie about the true nature of the terror attacks we have suffered. When they trick young people into believing that bad guys don't kill people, only guns do; when they lie that White people commit the most violence against minorities, when it is actually other minorities; and when top federal law enforcement repeatedly claim that White supremacists and nationalist Christians are the top domestic terror threat while ANTIFA and BLM are rioting in the streets and actual Islamist terrorists are biding their time and planning the next attack. There is no excuse for these children and their terrible behavior, but we can thank the democrat political machine and criminally complicit media for spreading a bullshit narrative which taught them all the lies necessary to make this happen.

I seriously doubt the majority of students at any major university are among the batshit Hamas apologists. With the MAGA hysteria about the border, at least that's an actual serious problem. These protests are not. If University security won't ask for help from local police or the National Guard, oh well. When people want to fuck themselves. hard to help them. It's shocking/sobering how, with people under 50, it's like World War II never happened. In the liberation of France, French civilians took more casualties than Allied armies did. A root problem with this issue is that we always elect bullshitters to office, who aren't trustworthy. US urban combat experts need to review classified Israeli information, advise the Biden on whether they are following proper rules of engagement, and then we need to trust Biden to do what's right. But we can't. He's only worried about keeping pro-Israeli votes without losing Arab votes. I don't agree that all or even most critics of Israel are Anti-Semitic. Which is a weird term anyway, Arabic is also a Semitic language.

Instead, they aim their bile towards Jewish groups on campus like Hillel or at any Jewish student they can find. Scratch an "Anti-Zionist" and underneath you'll find an Anti-Semite.

There is no such thing as Islamophobia. Just a fake, made-up word to legitimize the sick disgusting bigoted foundation of Islam. There is no such thing as an antizionist or antisemite. They are jew haters, not anti-anything, just sick disgusting vile jew haters. Imagine is people were walking around a college campus with a sign about Mohammed, the prophet, who fucked a 9-year-old girl, his wife. Can I walk around campus with a sign that says Muslims out of Judea? Of course not. In WW2 there was a group of Jews called "kapos". In our prison system they'd be called trustees. They were Jewish inmates who turned traitor and helped the nazis. The modern-day example is Bernie Sanders. Jew haters parade him around whenever they need a traitorous Jew to justify their hatred. He is a stooge, a traitor to his religion and his country and the absolute epitome of what it means to be a democrat. His followers would be those in the jew hating mob saying they are Jewish. They will be kapos when the time comes as well. Cease fire now? Why? To help Hamas survive so they can rape and kill some more is the only reason. The Hamas attack occurred when there was a cease fire in effect. Jews seem pretty smart to me, so the idea the muslims will trick them again is sort of stupid, so stupid in fact that only a progressive would take it seriously. No one displaced the Palis from the land they stole called the West Bank. Jordan, who was in possession of the West Bank in 1967, started a war and lost the land. The locals have continued the war and as such have earned every shitty thing that has ever happened to them. For comparisons sake and using 9/11 as an example I would say Israel suffered far worse proportionally in the hamas attack which killed less than 2,000, after raping and torturing the women, than we did on 9/11 where around 3,000 died. The Hamas attack, if it happened here would have killed 52,000 Americans, given the population disparity. If that was the casualty count here I would hope our Government would eradicate the entire population of the entity attacking us. If Israel was a Muslim country that was attacked in the way Israel was attacked within 2 weeks there'd have been 11 left alive in Gaza in retribution. Israel would have gotten the same pushback if they had killed them all.......

@25 - gammanu actually had some good points in there, about how Obama administration downplayed some major Islamic terrorism incidents as "workplace violence" or "gun violence." We saw the feds do that at the Christian school shot up by a trans shooter in Nashville. All of sudden they don't release the manifesto??? If that's an anti black shooter that manifesto goes everywhere before the blood dries. @ilbbaicnl - "dishonorable policing" is way the fuck overstated as a threat. An unarmed young black male is several orders of magnitude more likely to be killed by another young black male than a cop. @ikmowbetter - agree, I have plenty of Muslim friends, I do service with local Muslims regularly, but they still can't comprehend why many are afraid of them. ^ @Nicespice: I’m still scratching my head at all this. Does anybody have any ideas what is driving a lot of these attitudes? This is long, get a beer. BTW, does anyone have access to Does ANYONE have access to: http://www.umich.edu/~marcons/Crusades/timeline/detailedtimeline.html ? (read below why) Leftist Student Indoctrination over 40 years has finally reached critical mass, and Social Media starting in the 2000s poured gas like an accelerant and lit a fire to intensify indoctrination. Radical Islam has been in a global Jihad for over 1,000 years. Many blame the Crusades on the Christians. Islam started their Jihad around 850AD and managed to take North Africa and a good chunk of Southern Europe. Around 1100AD, the Pope said enough and launched the first Christian Crusade to take back Jerusalem/The Holy Land. I use to have access to an excellent timeline for all this from the University of Michigan, now it is password locked, sucks. Does ANYONE have access to: http://www.umich.edu/~marcons/Crusades/timeline/detailedtimeline.html Now, as Iran is close to having a nuke, radical Islam is getting uppity and attacking. Iranian Revolution/Islamic Revolution in 1979 really started the current radical festivities, Beirut Army barracks attack in 1982 by an Iranian Homicide Truck bomb, Serbia/Bosnia/Kosovo in the 1990s – this one is complicated. Serbia is a Christian majority country. Islam is the majority in Kosovo. Islam spread to Serbia during The Ottoman Empire. During the Crusades, the Serbs drove Islam out of Southern Europe, and there has been intense hatred since then. For details, you can look up this 1,000-year hot mess. The WTC bombing in 1992, USS Cole Destroyer attacked in 2000, The WTCs 9-11-2001, Hamas setting up shop in Gaza in 2006/2007 after Israel left its occupation and Hamas became the elected Gov't as an Iranian proxy, Hezbollah and other Iranian radical terrorist proxies grow, ISIS. Yada Yada Yada - you get the idea. Radical Islam still has a global Jihad. Iran uses these terror groups as proxies, and Hamas went on a monstrous rampage on 7-Oct-2023. They’ve managed to gin-up support and have spread to US campuses. A lot of the “peaceful protesters” are not students, and are clueless participants for whatever reason – I put them in the DUMBASS category. These riots have roots to Occupy Wall Street (OWS) in 2011, BLM and other global radical groups. Columbia University hired a solid Hamas supporter “professor”, Joseph Massad, 3 months ago who has been a staunch supporter of Hamas’ murderous invasion of Israel, and applauded it. This would be like John Hopkins Medical University hiring Josef Mengele as a research professor. When we had student protests in the 1960s over Vietnam, it was legit as they were being drafted and sent to a war/conflict they didn’t support. Now we have “protesters” who are dumbass clueless. Try being a LGBT* and you’ll be tossed off a building. Be a woman, and life is going to be brutally bad, and yet so many women are supporting and call themselves “We are Hamas”.

^^The root cause of "these attitudes" is partisan politics. I am a MAGA WASP who believes in hard word, sacrifice, and intellectual debate with truth, facts, and un-doctored data. He is a SJW who revels in his own victimhood, and eschews intellectual debate in favor of slander, gaslighting, and ad hominem attacks. While you are correct about the history of Islam, there are equal atrocities and horrors in the histories of Christianity and Judaism (the Spanish Inquisition, the scouring and murder of Jesus Christ). There is also a very real cultural divide which renders the moral code and social expectations of Eastern minds indecipherable to our Western selves. A very real debate my father (a US Marine) and I had, repeatedly, was reflected in the film American Sniper: can you kill a kid who is attacking you or your comrades in a warzone. The kid has a rifle, locked and loaded, or IED, or whatever, and you have the choice of killing the kid or allowing the kid to go and attack whatever Americans or civilians he intends to harm. He felt it was never justified to kill the kid, where I felt that applying Western values to an Eastern war was a failing battle plan. That's a debate than can never be settled. He felt most strongly about this regarding the Israeli actions against the Palestinians and Lebanese. For this, he opposed Israeli military actions against civilian populations. The debate can go in circles endlessly about whether you can eliminate terrorist guerillas without engaging civilian targets. I think I covered the problems with radical professors pretty thoroughly in an earlier comment. You were entirely correct when you wrote "These riots have roots to Occupy Wall Street (OWS) in 2011, BLM and other global radical groups." A lot of people would like to dismiss it as paranoid conspiracy theory, but there are professional instigators and agitators who are employed by moneyed activists to go and foment trouble and sow chaos. During the Cold War, the Soviet Union became very adept at indoctrinating and installing sympathizers in influential positions, particularly academia. While the Soviet Bloc has failed, these people have not changed their beliefs and continue to actively work against the United States, against the free market economy, and against representative government. Freedom of speech and thought is a founding principle of our nation, but when should an individual be censored or excluded for espousing views that are antithetical to normal mores?

The “smart” college kids at the elite colleges are the biggest idiots. They’re so smart they can convince themselves of anything. They’re idealists with no life experience who have been told they’re smart, and they’re surrounded by faculty that is 90% leftists and many are downright militant Marxists still living in the 1960s. That being said, “Stop the War” (any war) is always going to be popular on campus. Except the war in Ukraine for some reason. Just keep pouring fuel on the fire in Ukraine.

@gammanu "While you are correct about the history of Islam, there are equal atrocities and horrors in the histories of Christianity and Judaism (the Spanish Inquisition, the scouring and murder of Jesus Christ)." Whatever has happened in the distant past, we live in 2024. I'm not seeing atrocities these days in the same of putting all people under Christian or Jewish rule. I'm not seeing rallies in the west saying "massacre those who insult Buddhism" or "hang those who insult Jesus." It seems like just about every religious conflict in this world involves one religion trying to impose itself on others. One religion that far and away commits the most religiously motivated terrorism. One religion that, once it gets a majority anywhere, tries to squelch the practice of any others. One religion that has spread by force more than any other in the last 1500 years. What religion is that? Islam. I agree with most of what you say

@studme - you have no idea how correct you are. I've known that type so well. With a single digit % of exceptions, like i mentioned, their only demonstrated competency has been pleasing authority figures, who in turn tell them they're humanity's great hope. And for such smart people, they're driven by their feelings not their brains. But what might be even more damaging is that a lot of these kids are trust fund babies for whom daddy's or mommy's money or power has bailed them out of dumb decisions or even jail. They have never faced the consequences of their actions. Like Ilhan Omar whose daughter is just now realizing that her actions at the protest are just not cricket in polite society. Put that together and you get a toxic cauldron of useful idiots for Hamas and Hezbollah to work with. Oh and @gammanu, speaking of people who hate capitalism, is it a surprise that the biggest capitalism hater here, CJKent, is an academic with family money? Go figure...

Twentyfive's hypocrisy is astounding. Everything he accuses others of, he does in every thread with so many other individuals. This that gaslighting I noted. Snide remarks, attacking others, derailing threads, this is his retirement. This is how he enjoys life. @puddytat, I would say you are partially right. There is little contemporary equivalence in 2024, and it is important to also note that the most murderous ideology causing the most deaths is Socialism, but the schism between Judeo- Christian morals and Muslim morals makes a fair comparison/contrast impossible. There are Muslims who have found a way to incorporate western values into their faith and they flourish. There are also the backwards fearmongering Imams in Iran and other nations who maintain devotion through punishment and coercion. Lumping all Muslims together or holding them accountable for the "Allah or the sword" conquests of the past is just as wrong as holding modern Americans responsible for slavery, contemporary Europe accountable for colonialism, and so on. The difference in Israel is that Hamas is the current governing body of Gaza and the Palestinians. That governing body invaded and attacked Israeli civilians and retreated back into Palestine and Palestinian civilian infrastructure, not government prisons or buildings. Hamas weaponized the civilian population of Gaza and continues to torture and kill their prisoners. It is not rational to tie that back to the Crusades or historical conquests.

Grow a thicker skin. That said I apologize, I didn't mean any harm by it other then smacking you for flaming what was an intelligent discussion with a different board member. @gammanu - I'm not lumping in all Muslims, but it wouldn't be honest to deny that Islam has a serious problem in the modern day. Whatever Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Shintoism, Norse paganism did back in the day is only for context. Religion X is as religion X does. I know plenty of Muslims who have adapted to modern American society, lots of doctors she engineers, but I can't be blind to what Muslim immigration has done in Europe, particularly the UK and Sweden. Every minority religion in a Muslim state seems to have a very rough go of it. And they seem to live over the delusion that Palestinians lived in uncontested peace and harmony until the evil Jews came in 1948, which just isn't true.

Seems like any ideology can be spin doctored to justify repression and power grabs. When Muslims want to do that, they talk more about the Hadith and Sharia Law than the Quran. When it's Christians, they talk more about the Old Testament than the Gospel. The protesters ought to stop and think, that Native Americans have as much reason to kill them and their families, as Hamas has to kill Israeli civilians.

^ Not equivalent. I don't see Christians or Jews saying convert or die, kill those who insult their religion. Before we talk about ancient history, we're not living in medieval England. Funny thing is for all the protesters talk about colonialism and indigenous people, the Jews are the oldest extant people in Israel/Palestine. They were there 2600 years before Islam came into being

^ there has been a continuous Jewish presence in the Holy Land for thousands of years, we were there before the pyramids were built in Egypt, as a matter of fact we (us Jews) built them. Palestine is not the same as Israel, Palestine is actually a corruption it the ancient Roman word for Philistine, those were the people that David fought in the biblical times (remember David slew Goliath) and the philistines we’re competing with the Jews throughout the Levantine, trying to conquer eretz Yisroel. The people we call Palestinians are actually various Arab peoples they really aren’t Palestinians actually Egyptian or Jordanian, even Syrians and others who settled in the region. Another point to consider is there are Moslem countries Christian Countries even Hindus and Buddhists have their own countries why does the world begrudge the Jews one of the smallest countries that prior to the founding of the modern state of Israel was an arid place mostly desert and rock formations remember greater Israel was much larger in biblical times. Lastly just to educate folks that may not be aware is these people calling themselves Palestinians aren’t even refugees most left on orders from the Arab world which attacked Israel immediately after the U. N. Mandate partition in 1947-48 even though the Jewish state asked them to remain and participate in the founding of the modern state. I’d add that most of the so called refugee camps are quite permanent with homes and apartment buildings constructed, these are permanent structures not tents. There’s an awful lot more of this history which I have not covered but the above mentioned is absolute facts and are not in dispute by any knowledgeable folks.

Some of these comments are breathtakingly insane. Christians talk about the Old Testament? Really? They all talk about the Torah? Um, Christianity is based on the New Testament. Some have the right idea, but bad math, as Jews residing in Judea and Samaria predate the creation of Islam by over 3600 years, so the colonizers certainly isn't them. Let us now look at the contributions of Islam and Judaism to humanity. Whether or not you agree with the concept of the Nobel prizes, they were created to acknowledge contributions in the arts, literature, science. medicine, politics, to the betterment of humanity. May not always attain that goal, but that is why they were created. Muslims make up 25.8% of the earth's population and have won 9% of all Nobel awards. Jews make up .02% of the earth's population and have won 22% of all Nobel awards. I will let all y'all name all the great Muslims who have contributed and I will just throw in a few great Jews off the top of my head: Sigmund Freud; Albert Einstein; Marie Cure; Jonas Salk; Edward Teller; Niels Bohr; Cary Grant; Leslie West; The Three Stooges; Werner Von Klemperer; The Marx Brothers; Elizabeth Taylor; Irving Berlin; Rod Carew; Sammy Davis, Jr.; Emma Lazerus; Bob Dylan; Michael Landon; Jesus; God and the list gors on.....

@gmd: your statement "If a "Liberal Arts: education were still actually liberal, we wouldn't have a problem. All the "marginalized communities" and "alternative readings" would be covered as part of that." is false at every word. Wikipedia described it well.: A liberal arts college or liberal arts institution of higher education is a college with an emphasis on undergraduate study in liberal arts and general sciences. Such colleges aim to impart a broad general knowledge and develop general intellectual capacities, in contrast to a professional or vocational curriculum.[1] Students in a liberal arts college generally major in a particular discipline while receiving exposure to a wide range of academic subjects, including general sciences as well as the traditional humanities subjects taught as liberal arts. Although it draws on European antecedents,[2] the liberal arts college is strongly associated with American higher education, and most liberal arts colleges around the world draw explicitly on the American model.

I, too, went to a small, liberal arts college for the express purpose of gaining the broad general knowledge as I had already learned how knowledge in one area can be applied in another, and so I sought as much general knowledge as I could. The second state in your post is more or less correct.

Between the people who were bums for both of them, Jews and Arabs. If the Palestinians had been less fearful of he Jewish refugees, there might be a very successful one state solution in the Holy Land. Now in the US, we demonize refugees, even though we risk economic/demographic crises without them. People never learn.

She reminded me that my parents' generation and my generation had a lot of ivy leaguers in our family, including both of my parents, 2 of my siblings 5-8 first cousins and 4 cousins by marriage. We didn't discuss the many Ivy leaguers further out on the family chain. She then pointed out that amongst nieces, nephews and children of first cousins that we had 4 valedictorians and another 19 honor roll students. She further pointed out that none of them went to an Ivy League school although evert one of them was accepted to at least one. She was her class valedictorian, was accepted to Yale, Columbia and U. Penn. and Chose Va Tech, graduating this year after completing her studies in 3 years and pointed out she went to Va Tech because she wanted to go to school with Americans and not progressives and foreigners. She feels her generation is aware that progressives are killing this land and are fighting back.
