I took a mongering trip up there about 3 years ago. I enjoyed it. But I couldn't stand the weather. I went in early October and it was already chilly then.
I lived in downtown Detroit for five years and it was a fairly positive experience. My only complaint was having to go shop for groceries in the suburbs. Despite paying 300,000,000 on rent in downtown, it's still okay in downtown Detroit. The suburbs are great if you're a dude looking for some "VIP action".
My only suggestions for people are to not venture into the Brightmoor neighborhood of Detroit and to also stay far the fk away from the 48205 aka 4820DIE zip code. It's all gang territory and known as the bloodiest area of Michigan.
You can Google 4820DIE to read up about it if you want. 🤷🏼♀️
Igrew up out side of Detroit. The city is a shit hole. The only good places to go are. Are the SC'S, Ford field, and Comerica park, the river front. other then that don't waist your time.
As I guy who travels a ton for work in the Midwest and mid-Atlantic, most of my time is spent in the rust belt. Of the rust belt cities Detroit is my favorite. Yes, probably because (pre COVID) there’s lots of places to gamble (poker rooms) and tons of good strip clubs where $200 usually got you whatever you wanted.
In its heyday (again pre COVID) I called it “the Vegas of the Midwest.” I used to fly to Vegas to play in poker tournaments and I’d always wind up in strip clubs, in Detroit I could do the same exact thing for a fraction of the price, get away with more inside the club and I could drive there too. 3 nights in Vegas used to cost me $5,000 plus whatever airfare was. 2 nights in Detroit would cost me no more than $1,000. Downtown Detroit sucks but their suburbs are amazing. Money like you wouldn’t believe. Amazing houses, you’ll see a lot of exotic and classic cars too. You won’t see this in Buffalo, Cleveland, Toledo, Syracuse… people forget Detroit has money, but it’s all in the suburbs. When you have 3 of the biggest corporations in the county in the same city they host a lot of high paying jobs and that’s where these nice lake front houses and exotic cars on the road come from.
There also are a lot of attractive women in these suburbs. Of course not as good as a California city or maybe NYC, but for a rustbelt or Midwest city they hold there own. I don’t see as many attractive women when I’m in Indianapolis, Kansas City or Colombus Ohio for example.
A lot of people don’t know much about Detroit other than what they see on TV. A long time ago before I knew any of this stuff even existed in Detroit, I had a job interview there, and when I told my (at that time, newly married) wife, she cried. Lucky for both of us I didn’t get the job.
There are pros and cons living anywhere especially in a large city, but for me I’m glad I live in a small town. My only gripe is I’m 1 hour away from a large metro area, and I wish it was only 30 minutes away, that would be more convenient.
Sadly today, the Detroit I once knew is all gone. Most of the strip clubs are closed or just plain suck, almost all the poker rooms are closed too. Not sure I will ever go back for a “pleasure” trip again.
If we REALLY want to start taking shots at cities, not too long ago I heard Phoenix described as “Detroit and Vegas hooked up, and abandoned their deformed unwanted orphan in the middle of the desert”
I actually like Phoenix, but that description was hilarious.
Let's not go overboard. Even the most avid strip club monger doesn't wish he lived in Detroit. A sublet or timeshare, maybe.
Shailynn summed it up pretty well. Detroit is limping along living off the last fumes of a historic past. It was deep into decline when the 2008 recession hit, and that was just the final, crushing blow.
How many people (sans Jackslash and Yum) have actually BEEN to Detroit in the past couple of years?
Like any large metro area there are good and bad areas.... it's really no different than many cities I've been in and has some cool history, architecture, food choices on top of the suburban clubs where fun is still largely available; not to mention fantastic inexpensive golf courses. Having grown up in the near inner city of a midwest town I guess things just don't bother me as much as others.
Blue-collar workers in Detroit proper mostly came up from the South. They did pretty well from about 1940 to 1960. Then the gradually got at least as fucked as the people are where they came from down South. So now, if they haven't managed to get away (many have), they are fucked and also cold six months of the year. White collar people have all moved to Macomb County.
Just finished a pleasant afternoon and evening in the motor city. Hit a few clubs along Michigan avenue then went to the tigers game. If I hadn’t started at 5am today I would’ve kept on going tonight but I’m old and slowing down now lol. Back in to the office tomorrow before 5am, gotta keep that hustle going and make my $$$ to support my stripper addictions
😂😂😂 I can just tell from the comments ALL of you are white. There are new developments happening in Detroit everyday. The city has more life than ever and y’all are focusing on crime that happens in EVERY major city. Do none of you realize how much money is being put in Detroit for redevelopment?
