The Decline in Strip Club Advertising

This may or may not be much of a surprise, but it seems that the internet, and more specifically, the rise of social media, has led strip clubs to rely a lot less on using the more traditional methods of advertising to get customers into the clubs.

Every now and then, I will hear a radio advertisement for a strip club. I also will occasinally see a billboard advertisement when traveling to a destination outside of the Detroit area. In regards to radio advertising, I used to hear ads all the time when I was in college. The few years I lived in Wisconsin, I would hear radio ads for the Silk Exotic clubs almost daily. When I moved to the Detroit area, it became a lot less frequent for me to hear club ads on the radio. The first few years I lived in Detroit, there were a decent amount of ads I recall hearing, but not as many as when I lived in Wisconsin, and there have been stretches of maybe 6 months where I would not hear an ad on the radio at all. Lately, any radio advertisements for Detroit clubs have been non-existant, at least on the stations I listen to.

The simple answer probably is websites like TUSCL, as well as clubs maintaining their own Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, has probably led to the decline of radio and billboard ads. However, since I don't get many opportunities to travel across the United States, I am curious if other TUSCL members have noticed a similar decline where they live when it comes to clubs running radio advertisements.

They still do plenty of advertising just not the traditional stuff it doesn’t work any more. They have usually an internet presence and they hire an IT service that keeps them on the top of internet search engines they accumulate cell numbers and send text blasts, email addresses and email promotions. Plenty of new ways to advertise besides the old methods, most people don’t read newspapers or listen to radio now with streaming music on line. You just aren’t aware of the actual effort that is expended to keep you aware of their presence.

Growing up in the Washington DC area for the last 40+ years, liquor stores and strip clubs had never been advertised, yet everyone in the area knows where to go. Even before social media, word-of-mouth was how the advertising was done in addition to just being able to see the signage from the main road. As a kid, I remember times when me and my dad would be around town running errands and we would get hungry. When I saw a big sign that said, "RESTAURANT" on a building I would say, "LOOK! There's a place we can eat!" and he would say, "No son.... that's not the kind of restaurant you think it is."

I’ve not seen strip club billboards in my area in awhile. One club (Lace - in Wayne, NJ) would have a billboard ad every once and awhile.

There are clubs that advertise on NYC taxis - like Flashdancers (and others). I still see those ads. I’m guessing the taxis are noticed by tourists - and that might be somewhat effective.

In my view, when making a decision to go to a nearby club, I’ll consult this site. I’m not a casual clubber, so I want to make sure the club offers my type of entertainment, before I head out.

I think the internet offers better, and more precise target advertising. I’m guessing billboards can get a club name out - but it’s more miss and less hit.

When I drove to Florida - I remember seeing billboards for one strip club - and there were quite a few. It was amusing - as there were lots of billboards for hotels, restaurants, south of the border, truck stops - and one strip club!

Billboards are effective if you are in the area and what you are searching out is advertised but they are expensive and only efficient within a small area.

WSCR sports radio in Chicago used to have spots for several clubs but not any more. I guess they weren't getting a good ROI on them.

The only strip club ads that I've seen lately are the ones that desertscrub has pointed out.

I assume most locals know where the local clubs are, so advertising would be focused on visitors who would likely Google "Denver strip clubs" or something like that. The search engines are likely getting the advertising money now.
