Is Pubic Hair Making a Comeback with Women?

Feeling age appropriate and comfortable seem to be the main factors in more women deciding to let their genital freak flags fly.

LOS ANGELES—According to The New York Times, a new trend is rearing its hairy head as more women decide to forgo the Brazilian bikini wax in favor of, as writer Marina Meltzer puts it, "a fuller look." As evidence of this new trend, the Times cites famous people like Lady Gaga, Gweneth Paltrow, Gaby Hoffman and Cameron Diaz, each of whom has recently extolled the pubic in one way or another, including pictorially.

In fact, writes Meltzer, "In certain corners of Manhattan, the bald look of the Brazilian has become déclassé, more suggestive of a naked Barbie doll or a reality television starlet than an organic lifestyle of cold-pressed juice and barre classes."

The owner of a West Village spa supported that observation, commenting, “We have noticed a massive decrease in requests for Brazilians and high bikinis. Our clients in particular are eco- and health-minded, and the grown look certainly suits a girl who is more au natural.”

In other less affluent parts of the country, a shift in what women want has also been noticed, but not to the degree that is being seen in the Big Apple. For the owner of three Urban Waxx locations in the vicinity of Portland, Oregon, business has held steady but more women are asking for less hair rather than no hair.

“Sometimes as women get older, they feel self-conscious about having no hair,” said owner Shannon Conley. “So leaving hair at the top gives the illusion of having normal bikini hair, but is still groomed.”

Indeed, grooming appears to be the key to happy follicles and people. Said Alexis Steinman, a Seattle-area customer who for the last six years has honed what she calls “the Alexis”—a full front and bare everywhere else—“I have been ridiculed by many waxers, but having no hair, you look like a stripper or a kid. Neither one of those things are what I'm aspiring as a woman to resemble.”

Which brings us to the one word we expected to see in the Times article, but did not: porn. Our assumption going in was that one of the reasons women would begin forgoing no pubic hair would be a backlash against the ubiquity of bald porn pudenda.

But even within the ranks of female porn stars, there seems to be a trend among the younger women toward more hair, if not the overgrown shrubbery of yore, or even the landing strip style, which may have run its course, but toward a cute, fully manicured bush designed to enhance and yet not hide anything. In many ways, the best of both worlds.

Perhaps the advice tendered by actress Diaz to the Times in an email says it best, not just for women but for producers of explicit erotica: "Trim it, tease it, dye it like an Easter egg ... just bear in mind that trends and preferences change and you should think about keeping your future options open for yourself (and your future lovers).”

A disgusting development. Hated pubic hair since 1968 when I first saw it on a female.

I hope not. I love going down on girls, but not with hair down there.

I may be in the minority but I like a neat bush. Shaving used to ne naughty but now it seems everyone does it. I'm glad to see that style changing.

I know dancers don't have much choice but to be bare, but I was well pleased that my last G/F grew hers back for me, and the one before had a nice bush to begin with. She was cute how she almost apologized for it the first time while we were getting naked, but I loved it.

Well, you had to expect it would come back at some point, I hope? Now, if they really wanted to fly the freak flag, they would forget to shave their pits.

@Dandy: That's actually common in Europe. I can't say it's my preference! Legs and pits: shave. Bush: trim only.

A Brazilian cut is ok, but that's about the limit for me.

@Londonguy-If you're ever in LA, hit me up. I know some mighty delicious Churrascarias that bbq great Brazilian cuts.

Sounds gross, I wouldn't get a LD from a babe with a bush.

I got a lap dance this afternoon from a young spinner and I was shocked when I went for the bush. I found one and didn't like it.

Some women have said that going bare seems to feed the male kiddie porn fetish--girls too young to have pubic hair; therefore, growing it back is a rebellion against pedophilia. It's also a rebellion against male oppression that defines what is acceptable as beautiful, attractive or sensual.

We'll just have see how they feel when a S/O asks about the thong he gave her for Valentine's Day, which she may or may not wear with her full bush.

Unless guys are willing to "manscape" themselves hairless themselves they have no right to insist on a hairless hootchie.

@lopaw: +1!

I don't suppose it will come as a great surprise if I say that I welcome this development. :)

Though I shave, I don't insist that anyone else do it. One of the girls I'm seeing now has started to indulge me, and lets it grow. :)

My ATF as a fully nude stripper has been bald for many years. She complained of my pubes, so I let her shave me. You then let me shave hers and we have maintained that. In my early years I enjoyed DATY and never minded having some floss left over.

Nothing wrong with a little hair, nicely trimmed is great. Full blown '70's porn bush, not so much. Bald is okay but often looks juvenile, and I'm not into manscaping either.

And I think a cutting edge dancer in a full nude SC could attract more customers with stylized grooming of her pubic hair. At least you could see something from across the room.

I realize that shaving down there every day for a civilian may be a pain but at minimum it need to be groomed and trimmed. 6" long pubic hair is just wrong. I prefer little or no pubes on a woman. The last relationship I had she would go mostly bare in the summer during bathing suit weather and trimmed in the winter. The fun part was she would have a shaving party for me in the spring where I got to trim and shave her for the summer.

I LOVE pubes! The texture, extent, and color of pubic hair is one of the very interesting things about women, like the nipples. When you see them, you see something "secret," and that's part of the thrill of seeing a woman naked.
