No Icee, in most strip clubs the dancers really do protect themselves and establish the limits.
THis is less so in DV clubs because they are so big that no one wants to cross them, and because they are really a think tank figuring out the psychology of the interactions and then making the dancers go along with it.
And yes BTE, US clubs exist because we are the only country with such zeal for enforcing the prostitution ban.
DV though goes way beyond this, limiting all front room interaction in order to get people into the toll boths, and to undermine the customers free interaction with the dancer.
In or local underground circuit there are no booths or back rooom, as they had not been when Jim and Artie were running MBOT. It is a freer interaction, and experienced dancers insist that they make more money that way.

Icey the clubs where the dancers have the least power is DV.
Now true, instructed by their lawyers, DV has backed off on the weigh ins and the fines, but it still has the tightest controls, and girls are afraid of standing up to DV because they control so much of the industry.

^ no what it amounts to is that the non Deja Vu clubs are just trying to get along in defiance, and maybe in denial. It takes a lawsuit to enforce AB5.
And this will come when a contingent of the dancers retire.
DV's has lots of pricey lawyers. Their position is that they are a corporate target, so they have to follow the letter of the law now. When those other clubs get sued, DV has said, "We'll be waiting in the wings", to buy them up on the cheap. And zoning makes it impractical to open any more retail clubs.
This is real bad!

I noticed during the COVID shut down that people had tents set up in lots of places where they wouldn't have been able to before. Retail businesses closed, why not. But then after the shutdown lifted, they had to move.
San Francisco is just a lot more wild and wooly.
I know from having worked in a group to try and offset the effects of the Born Again Groups on the poor and the homeless, that drugs are endemic with the unhoused. And so any thing you try to do will be constrained by drug effects. And this is a big part of what is being used to rationalize a mental health approach. It will be the selling and the using. Your just engaging with a contingent that has for so long lived outside of the law and without much above ground income. But a Mental Health approach will not help.
Now of course Universal Basic Income and a strong public housing offering goes a long way. You don't want any needs tested programs because that always makes the recipients the scapegoats, and then you are halfway there to having it be a mental health program already. UBI, everyone gets it. And Public Housing, available to whom ever wants it.
I am seeing the main players in this as not being Richard Bloom or Tom Umberg. I am seeing them as Gavin Newsom, Thomas Insel, Darrel Steinberg, and Susan Eggman, and each one of these four is very strange and very much a problem.
I think Insel and Steinberg are the most strange.
Insel is committed to chemical mode alteration, like all prescription drugs, drugs that give you the euphoic high of sex, LSD, and then to regular Scientology like Auditing over the cell phone.
Steinberg I had not know about. He is probably the source of an idea now found among liberals that Mental Health treatment is more humane than criminal prosecution and more humane than poverty.
But in fact they use mental health treatment to get into things that would be impractical to prosecute criminally because there are so many unhoused. And as far as being more humane than poverty, it is social marginalization which causes poverty. Mental Health treatment is just more abuse and marginalization.

The dancers did not ask for AB5. And these law suits are always retired dancers.
Dynamex was a real sleazy operation. We should not have to extrapolate from that to the whole society, like musicians, actors, and dancers.
In the loose clubs as they have been, the women have lots of power, rights, freedom, and income.
But now they have to be employees. Strip club management cannot have a written list of rules for what they can and cannot do, because that would make them culpable. They need multiple layers of deniability.

Shellenberger is a guy writing from a position of outrage. He sees the unhoused as bringing about complete anarchy, as many laws have become unenforceable. And this is simply because there were big up ticks in homelessness with the 2008 crash, and with the COVID crash.
As far as open air drug dealing, maybe the authorities see it as not worth enforcing the law, not worth taking up jail space.
I know San Francisco has been like this for a long time. Ask someone for directions and they try to sell you drugs. Then they expect a donation for having given you directions.
Never seen this in San Jose.
Sacramento has long been a pretty tough an unruly town.
I think that is a lot of what is driving this. The unhoused are getting impossible to control, but that is mostly because there are so many of them.
And it was after 2008 that they first started talking about giving the unhoused housing. And some of this has been done.
But my concern is more about how they are intent on making this into a mental health issue, a Psychiatric Police State. We need to be eradicating the mental health system, not making it metastasize.

The club needs to prove that they are contractors. Like how much freedom they have over what they do (costuming, stage sets, hours). If club can do this, they may stay contractors.
But in CA, because of Dynamech and AB5, you cannot use contractors for the regular content of your business. And other states have long been following CA Labor Law.
So the only choice we have if clubs are to still be nasty is:

I am glad Pelosi went, just to stand up to China with its history of human rights abuses. But I also know that there is going to be a huge world wide arms build up, on account of Ukraine and Taiwan. Big expansion into sophisticated high tech weapons. That Javelin Missile has proved so important. And they we want hypersonic weapons, which Russia has something of.
