Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul

Avatar for motorhead
motorheadFat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life

Will anyone be watching? I haven’t paid much attention to the fight but as the event nears, I am curious to watch.

I really don’t know much about Jake Paul but I thought he was an MMA fighter but it sounds like this will be a boxing match. I watched some boxing years ago but don’t follow it much now and have never watched an MMA event.

@motor - Everything you just said = same with me. Anyway, the idea of seeing Tyson back in the ring got me interested enough that I just signed up for Netflix this morning.

I remember watching Foreman at 42 go against the much younger Holyfield back in the early 90's. No one thought George had a chance, and though he ultimately lost a unanimous decision, he battled like a true champion. It was a great fight.

I'll never forget, in the post-fight interview, they asked Foreman if he had anything to say to those who had laughed at the idea of him fighting Holyfield. He said, "I'm laughing too... all the way to the Lafayette Trust Bank!"

If I wasn't working tonight I wouldn't mind this being on in the background at my local club. No idea if they have a Netflix subscription or how commercial licensing works on their end. Few years back they stopped showing UFC fights because they were getting screwed on licensing fees.

I'm in. Paul is younger and taller and almost has to be faster. Mike Tyson, the baddest mother ever in boxing, had a cardiac event just a month or two ago. In his prime, I would have taken Tyson over anyone- including Cassius Clay. Today, 20 years is a big age gap when the elder party is in his fifties.

While almost identical in weight, Tyson is just a huge chunk of muscle, and has been taking hits worse than Paul can dish out since he was a teenager. The die-by-side pics show two entirely different physiques, and Tyson is the one fit for boxing, regardless of how well Paul did at MMA.

@gmd- so you do not think age (less collagen and elasticity, reduced lean muscle, weaker bones, increased overall frailty, decreased speed/vision/cognition, reduced cardiopulmonary efficiency, etc.) Is going to give Jake a significant edge? I like Iron Mike and I'd love to see him win, but these truths have to be acknowledged.

I was wondering if any strip clubs were showing it. I know UFC fights used to be a thing at some clubs - I never paid attention, so not sure if it’s a thing.

I never much liked Tyson when he was younger but will be rooting for the old guy.

Motorrad I know I saw an ad for Brad's Brass Flamingo in Indianapolis saying they are showing it so I'm sure other clubs will as well. I don't see the point of going to a club to watch anything on TV, if it is bad enough in the club that I care what's on the TV I'm just going home instead where I can watch it more comfortably and with cheaper drinks and no annoying music.

Not a big boxing fan so I doubt I'll watch it. I will probably check out some highlights afterwards but that's about it.

This has all the hallmarks of the old bum of the month fights at the Garden when I was a kid. The fight itself is a phony, 8-2 minute rounds, these two washed up guys get a multi million dollar payday.

I agree with 25. Suspect it will be a show, not a fight. No one gets hurt.

I hope Im wrong. I’m gonna watch and would love to see a real battle. 30 year age difference means Paul would win a real fight.

Paul is from my area, I've seen most of Tyson's career, I'm not for or against either one of them but I would like to see the fight.
A local strip club has been advertising that they will show it plus 3.00 pizza slices. I'd like to watch it even though this club has some of the most unappealing dancers in the area, girls I wouldn't want for free.
But I have business out of town tomorrow which means I have to get up at 3am and be on the road by 5am, so it's early to bed for this guy.

If anyone knows where there will be any replay options in the future post links here please.

I already have Netflix and it's a slow Friday night, so why not? The added bonus is the chick fight leading up to it - for some reason I find Serrano to be very hot.

Hell no. I couldn't do it with any female boxer. I don't mind watching them beat the shit out of each other, but that's it. I couldn't do it with a gymnast either. Those big muscular legs. Yuk. I'm not a golf fan, but I like watching the ladies play. They look good, especially the Asians.

Got home from work and the undercard fights are still going. Stream is pixelated and the audio cuts out. Netflix doesn't have the best track record for live events.

Hope Iron Mike knocks the shit out of this Youtuber!

Barrios/Ramos undercard title card fight reminds me of an air dance, a draw after 12 rounds, all anticipation and no satisfaction plus Netflix can't handle the bandwidth required for a live fight, hope the major match is better, should be...Tyson is a beast at any age, hoping for a total ear removal

Jake proved himself a genuine boxer and was a humble winner. Mike showed he's still got game, and was a gracious loser. Netflix should stick to showing old movies and not live events. They ruined the whole evening for everyone.

Those ring girls were smoking hot, and they had what Muddy likes, GLITTER!

The undercard’s were top notch fights. Ramos is a local guy and if you’ve ever been around a bunch of Mexica Americans during a fight, they own that shit. It ended in a draw, but he beat Barrios in my opinion.

If Serrano didn’t win that women’s fight, then I don’t know what it takes to upend the title holder of the belt. She out punched Taylor and clearly defeated her. The blood in their faces showed they are warriors.

I just don’t understand all the angst w/the streaming of the event. I get it, it buffered and spun on me several times, yet I had other things going. Since It was also recording live, all I had to do was rewind the stream a few seconds and that would jar/refresh my stream and it would work well again. I did this maybe a handful of times or more, but i never felt
It detracted from my viewing pleasure since I had other things I was paying attention to. Some people are quite demanding, especially if they’re paying for a service to watch they expect it to work well.

PAWG goated for focusing on the only good part of the event. The blonde had a legendary face & tits combo on cam in the ring.

Deeply disappointing event from every other angle. Don't care for boxing so even if the undercards were good fights, didn't really matter to me. The likes of Jake Paul farming glory off of Tyson's shambling corpse while Netflix buffers away is just boring dystopia.

@gamanu95: " so you do not think age (less collagen and elasticity, reduced lean muscle, weaker bones, increased overall frailty, decreased speed/vision/cognition, reduced cardiopulmonary efficiency, etc.) Is going to give Jake a significant edge?"

In most cases, yes. I still don't think Paul would have won if Tyson hadn't phoned it in. I can't really tell if his lackluster performance was because he didn't care, or because he didn't have it in him. I know that if the Tyson who performed like he did in the last practice I saw had showed up to this fight, Paul would not have won.

Before the fight, I was discounting the possibility of it being rigged. Now I'm not at all sure there wasn't some arrangement.

The fight was a big disappointment. Round 1 was the best where Tyson had energy and was clearly on the offensive. After Round 1, Tyson was gassed, and looked terrible whenever the camera cut to his corner. I lost interest in the fight and was hoping he wouldn't just collapse and die in the ring.

On a positive note, I saw the fight at a Hooters and had a great time with a Hooters girl which made the evening worthwhile.

I thought first 2 rounds went to Tyson and I dare say Jake feared his power. After that, Tyson had nothing left in the tank and wasn't walking right. The few clips I saw of Tyson training told me he didn't belong in the right. I made a boatload of money on Jake and I really don't like the dude.

However, no one wants to see an old man get his ass beat (even though Tyson is jacked). Jake was looking for respect and I think he earned it. However, I still don't think he's a good boxer.

^ Jake earned some points for me for coming out to In the Air Tonight. But I don't take him seriously as a boxer until he fights actual boxers his own age, not washed up MMA guys or exhibitions like Tyson.

Tyson looked like an old man entering the ring. I was hoping he had something left, by round two, I knew he didn't. I wish Jake had stopped boxing for a few rounds and just went toe-to-toe with him. It would have made the fight more interesting and gave Tyson a chance.

Gammanu, its foolish to say a prime tyson could “take anyone” considering his losses. He lost to guys like lennox lewis, would have lost to old foreman, lost to holyfield, etc. whats the common trait in people he lost to? Taller longer reach, good durability. He would have lost to klitschko too. He wouldnt beat Ali either, for the same reasons.

@GMD what you fail to understand is boxing is not bodybuilding. Muscle mass actually requires more oxygen than fat mass, this is why you see numerous examples of fat out of shape looking guy’s actually beating muscle bound guys. Mayweather beat several guys who were in better shape than him, more ripped and muscular: look at george foreman vs ali. Ali was out of shape had a dadbod yet beat a muscular foreman. Look at lennox lewis vs klitschko, a very close fight. Look at tyson fury vs deontay wilder and others… or anthony joshua.
From a cardio/stamina perspective muscle mass actually hinders you more than fat mass. The bodybuilder guys tend to do worse in both boxing and football and mma. Pudzianowski went into mma and had to cut muscle.. brock lesnar lost to a bunch of guys less muscular than him.

Also if this fight was rigged, it was rigged to make them look relatively equal, in order to set up a rematch. Which means either tyson or paul were holding back and its more likely paul was holding back.
Tyson had more muscle mass on him, probably thanks to the diet and juice he was using, but muscle mass is only one factor whether boxing or mma. Even your punching power is a combination of your mass, speed and physical strength. So a weaker skinnier guy could potentially punch harder than a big strong guy, if his speed outweighs his muscle and strength.

One problem isnt just tysons age but the fact he actually quit boxing and working out entirely for 15+ years. Were he actually keeping up with training during the last 15+ years he would have done much better.

“Exhibition” means it doesnt go on their records but its still a valid way to determine who is a better fighter. Just like a street fight or sparring match or fight in a gym wouldn’t go on their official records. In no event is tyson or mayweather or anyone else going easy in these fights just because theyre exhibition matches.

I think the paul brothers beat these legendary guys because theyre either older retired or semi retired boxers, or mma guys or other athletes who dont have so much specific boxing experience. With boxing or anything else youll get out of it what you put into it, theyve been training boxing for a few years now, so it makes sense that theyll have a good chance of also beating other athletes who have also only been training boxing a few years or less. Anyone who puts the time and effort into their diet and training for years, should be able to do well unless theres some underlying health issues or genetic defects

Whole other discussion but i explored other avenues because of baseball. I would gladly pay for a MLB annual subscription but because of antiquated blackout rules that stupidly still exist - I missed about 1/3 of the games when I had a subscription.

Eh, I signed up for Netflix. Watched the fight, it was okay, not great (other than the shitty streaming which was awful). But for $6 bucks why not. Something different. I've watched a couple other things since then, but will cancel before the month is up. $6 bucks gets you less than 30 seconds on the tip parade at some places.

If you watched the fight and think you saw boxing I encourage you to google Hagler/Hearns. Round 1 of this fight has been called the greatest boxing match in history. In round one they combined to throw 165 punches. Hagler threw exactly 0 jabs and they landed a combined 106 punches in 3 minutes, with the majority being huge haymakers. Almost a punch per second.
