Democratic Debate Promises

The Democratic candidates will be debated tonight. What promises are going to be laid out ? We know they are going to talk about college debt relief , raising the minimum wage and medicare for all. But what other promises are the candidates going to give ? Here are some ideas : - Free Clothes - They are a necessity - Free Food - Can't live without it. - Free Car Insurance - Heck, why not just give everyone a car. - Free Smart Phones - Starting at age 14. It's for their protection. How are we going to pay for it ? Well, tax the "rich" of course. Anyone making more than $20,000 per year will pay a 90% tax rate.

A free Tesla for every American over 18 - everyone should be able to drive a nice car, this is America - and just as important it'll be good for the environment so it really pays for itself if one uses advanced liberal mathematics

^ Problem with your premise is last cycle, the Republicans had a similar free for all cage match and we ended up with the worst possible person ever to win the presidency. Decent voices are drowned out with so many candidates, as we saw in 2016.

Debate time again? I guess it's time for another strip club visit. Y'all let me know if any candidate offers free strip club visits. Thanks.

You're a shallow little guy, @Warrior. Please don't have an aneurysm.. Biggest problem with your argument is that the Trump corporate tax cut adds $1.9T to the deficit over a decade and it was just reported that the deficit is over $1T just this year. Most of the tax cut went into stock buybacks -- so it amounted to "free-stuff" for stock holders and especially those who are paid in company stock. If Trump wins, the deficit will be used as an excuse to cut entitlements for people who need it.

@Warrior: "Anyone making more than $20,000 per year will pay a 90% tax rate." ____________________________ I guess this is what passes for humor around here. Liz Warren has no chance of getting elected, but her proposal is a radical wealth tax on wealth *over* $50M at 2%.

For 50 years, Democrats have peddled the idea of identity politics. They told 30% of the nation that they were victims. They told 70% of the nation that they needed to give free stuff to the other 30%, or be exposed as racists. Lots and lots of free stuff. Racist, racist, racist. Finally, the 70% has realized this was all a hustle.

"... her proposal is a radical wealth tax on wealth *over* $50M at 2% ..." That's where it starts but soon it won't he enough for all their grand ambitions and high-taxes will start to trickle down into lower and lower income brackets until half the population or more is being hit with significantly higher taxes (that's how socialism works) - it's just way way easier to sell it as just taxing the rich

Problem is no one running wants to do anything about the debt. The Republicans used to at least give lip service to getting spending under control. Now very few of them even do that anymore. We'll be forced to get it under control eventually and it will be much more painful then than it would be now because we'll have created even more dependence on unconstitutional government programs.

Echoing what codemonkey wrote, austerity measures will soon be coming to a United States near you. Consider the violence and rioting that has occurred all over Europe as they learned their socialist policies had created insurmountable and untenable debt. Now look at America and our proud history of destructive rioting from the Boston Tea Party to the Chicago DNC in the 60s, to Ferguson and Baltimore. Furthermore, it is the poor inner city, the ones who use social welfare programs the most, who will have the most to lose when the cuts are made. These are also the groups who have historically shown themselves to be most prone to excessive rioting and random violence. The democrat party identity politics will only serve to make them feel more like victims and more justified in the lawless behavior when it does occur. It will happen, guys, and it will be horrific when it does. I'm glad I moved to a rural area.

@Papi wrote: "That's where it starts...blah, blah, blah..." _______________ You should try to keep an open mind, @Papi. There's a lot of wealth concentrated in the top 0.1%. Keep in mind this is wealth tax and not an income tax. There's enough money taxing wealth of the top 0.1% at 2% to fund proposals like forgiving college debt, universal child care, college tuition, etc.. The issue is not whether there is enough money; the issue is whether taxing wealth is constitutional and whether it can accomplished in a practical sense. It's not Warren's idea -- it was proposed by two superstar economists. I'm personally not in favor of things like free college tuition. It's exhausting trying to stay rational these days with over-emotional goofs like the OP. It's gotten to the point where couples should think twice before bringing children into the world where enough nutcases still deny the existence of climate change. And my take on the Dem candidates is that some of them are too old. That would include Warren, Biden, and Sanders. After watching Mueller testify I really don't want a president in their 70s. Biden, in particular, looked senile in the first debate.

"... You should try to keep an open mind, @Papi. There's a lot of wealth concentrated in the top 0.1% ..." One should be skeptical of politicians especially those that wanna change Anerica and turn it into the equivalent of an EU state which will be an exercise in "the cure being worse than the disease" - that's what the Communists said ("trust us, we're gonna take all your stuff and make it fair for everybody and it's gonna work like a charm") - AFAIK the wealthy already pay the bulk of the taxes and "it's not enough" - providing universal stuff to a country of nearly 350 million people is gonna take ginormous taxing. just look at the projected issues with Medicare and that is only w.r.t. a segment of the population

You make a good point, @Papi, and you don't want to tax so much that you reduce incentives to create the next Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, ... etc. The question is would you still have companies like that if we had a new wealth tax that starts at $50M and 2%? There's a lot of academic research that says yes -- but academic research is no substitute for actually implementing a wealth tax. We're talking about a tax on 75,000 people in a country of 325,000,000. At least someone like Warren spells out where the money is coming from. Sanders is just in dreamlike haze. Healthcare? That's by far the most important issue to me. With some incremental changes we can have something like the ACA that preserves the best features of capitalism and the private insurance market. That does require taxes. I don't want a society where a hard-working professional can go bankrupt because he's unlucky enough to get a serious illness. I agree that governments can be inefficient -- but there are some areas, like healthcare and financial regulation, where the government must play a role.

I agree that the very wealthy can afford an extra 2% and that it will probably help some (not withstanding the increased bureaucracy that will likely be created to implement and maintain new or expanded programs) - my main concern is not the tax on the very wealthy but a paradigm that I think it will set
  • twentyfive
^ It’s really not important what the wealthy can afford, truth is our politicians have guaranteed pensions and health care, and until this system is resolved to a point where their benefits are subject to the same abilities to afford as the programs that we have each and every one of us as Americans should hold these folks accountable for their actions Why should their future be assured when ours is in jeopardy

If you raise tax rates on the most successful members of society, two things will happen 1. They will find ways to legally avoid taxes 2. They will be unwilling to start new business ventures or otherwise invest their wealth. Higher rates will raise very little money for government programs but it will have a chilling effect on creation of jobs for the 99%.

Health care for all Americans. When I visited Berlin in January I learned that Germany has universal health care, 4 years of free college education, and 22 days of paid vacation. And they lost the war. You would think the winners could do at least as much.

I say limit politicians to 2 staff, living arrangements away from their elected districts in a state school dormitory, and plane rides replaced with the bus/train. They should also be on the same health care plan they push on the rest of the country. They would also take into their home a migrant family from the border to feed, cloth, educate and insure they are abiding by the laws of the land. That ought to save a couple of billion, at least.

Socialism often leads to rationing; only so much stuff you can give - when I was in college I would meet a lot of foreign students studying in the US bc only so many slots were allocated for a particular major.
  • mark94
Germany has all that free stuff because they are protected by the US military, their industry is protected by tariffs, and the nature of the Euro makes their goods artificially cheap. Slap a 25% tariff on European auto imports, move US troops in Germany to Poland, , and support a no deal Brexit. That’ll help level the playing field.

"Randommember, do you have any kids? " ____________ Yes, @Meathead, I have two kids -- but they probably wouldn't have anything in common with your low-IQ kids. So maybe they can play with someone else. The point I was making above is that with enough climate-deniers like yourself, the planet is doomed. There are predictions that Colorado will have a climate more like Tx in the next 20 yrs and with droughts and fires. In the next 40 yrs we'll probably have cataclysmic climate change. I thought Sanders, and especially Warren, were terrific last night. But both are too far to the left. Going for single-payer healthcare, decriminalizing border-crossing, and giving healthcare to those seeking asylum is a sure way to lose the election. I'll vote for Biden. Hopefully he'll surround himself with competent people even though he's a feeble and senile.

Why dont people understand the government will always be a fuck you, Republicans or Democrats is the same thing everytime, tell you what the polls tell them is popular to say, than do whatever the fuck benefits them in the long run. We all pin these topics against each other and fight, immigration is still shit, healthcare is worse than ever, nothing changes with guns, college debt is a joke (people need to get real degrees), everyone is a victim (both sides). The answer is simple, legalize sex and marijuana, use the profits to regulate, create a better immigration process and more Grants and better public schools, but no one has the balls to do it. Also tell parents to raise their kids better, guns have been around forever, people just educated thier kids and were better parents before. But then there wont be victims of racism or bullying to get an easy vote for.

Okay, I'll bite @Warrior. If you've noticed @Warrior, I haven't started a thread since 2015 whereas this thread is essentially a troll. For example you stated "anyone making more than $20,000 per year will pay a 90% tax rate." I tried to counter with the actual numbers from Warren which is 2% on wealth above $50M. And I also pointed out that the GOP corporate tax cut was a huge free-giveaway to a certain subset of the population and raises the deficit significantly. I think that makes *you* the jackass for starting a troll thread and ignoring the actual facts Are you talking about @Mark94's plagiarism? Joe Biden was caught plagiarizing two of campaign speeches and it's evidence of a sloppy, unoriginal, mind. Something to consider from a pres candidate. Catching someone like @Mark plagiarizing on site like this is just comical. Lol! And then there's your earlier thread making fun of Earth Day. You're a guy with kids doing his part to destroy the planet for your kids and grand kids. That makes you a jackass in my opinion. In any event @Warrior, this is typical thread where I try to stay objective with facts and figures and you resort to name calling.
