One of my parents hit in an office pool for $100K one time when I was a kid. There were 10 people in the pool, they each got a check for somewhere around $6,500 after the taxes were taken out. Caused a lot of issues in the workplace because some people had played in the past but weren't currently playing and thought they should have had a cut. Even two employees who retired and were no longer in the office complained because they were no longer in the pool.
A little over a year ago, I won $1000 on a lottery ticket from the Iowa Lottery. I have had no less than 5 $500 wins on various lottery games, both Lotto games and scratch tickets between Iowa and Nebraska. I won $100 once on a Minnesota Vikings ticket in Minnesota.
I buy Mega Millions or Powerball tickets about 5-6 times a year, so $50-$60 a year spent, which is probably $50-$60 more than I should spend on this.
But there is a feeling of anticipation, thinking this could be the day I buck the ridiculously minuscule odds, that fuels me for a few hours before I go online to see I usually matched one or no numbers.
I won $150 once. But I shouldn’t waste my time and money.
I follow California Governor George Deukmejian (R), never bought a lottery ticket and never will. Like to repeal that lottery, or even outlaw it federally. Voted in that election just to vote against it.

@SJG - This is actually one thing we agree on. I have also never played and never plan to. I think of it as voluntary taxes and don't really mind if other people want to play.
^^^^^ And I get the feeling that you are a self-destructive and desperate walking dead 25, no offense intended, just telling you how you come across to me.

Someone always wins and the jackpot rolls over if there isn’t a winner that week, so for guys that have a healthy and happy outlook on life why shouldn’t you be the one who wins.
Of course if you’re a pessimist, you know you’ll never be the lucky someone.
You guys saying its a tax on the stupid etc. are not aware. That's like saying us PL paying for strippers and whatnot is tax on the ugly, deformed, creeps, introverted nerds. Us paying for strippers doesn't make us creeps, nor is gambling a tax on the stupid. it's not as simple as 1+1
Forgot to mention. I do know a relative of someone who hit it really big. It was a group of women who also played in an office pool. They won for about 120 million split between I think around 7 women. One of the women was an aunt of a girl I knew. Besides her aunt and herself, her entire family lived in borderline poverty. Most of them do not work now and it appears they have invested their money wisely in rental properties and 2 small businesses.
For the people that say it’s stupid to play I think these people would disagree.
For the people that throw $10 on 5 powerballs when the jackpot gets above half a billion I don’t see anything wrong with that. There’s nothing wrong with dreaming... I know it’s more likely for me to get attacked by a grizzly bear or struck by lightning. I’m not sharing any when I hit to all you naysayers!!!
^I knew of a woman who won the NY State lottery twice, back in the late seventies, talk about lucky people, her husband was a physician, the head of neurosurgery at North Shore Hospital, in Manhasset, N.Y. and she owned a large designer boutique in an extremely expensive neighborhood on Long Island.
I buy a couple lotto tickets a year when one of the jackpots gets huge. It's worth the $4 to dream about what I might do with the money. I probably buy two of the scratch offs per month, just as the whim hits me. It's entertainment and a $100 a year won't kill me.
Then I see the people who put in $100 on scratch offs, immediately scratch them, cash the winners and repeat until they are out of money. IMO, those people have a problem.
Off topic - I love chessmaster’s avatar. That ass is insane.
I don’t see anything wrong with playing the lottery. It’s fun to put a few dollars in - and think what could happen. I don’t think much about it after.
I only play the lottery on vacation, as a lark! I've never won :(
I'm mixed about lotteries. Although I support legal gambling on general principle, I think it is kind of non-aces for the government to run the gambling. The reality is that the house ultimately wins in any gambling. If you choose to gamble you are either going to have fun or you think you can win.
If the former, brilliant! Spending money to entertain yourself is ultimately the point of having money! ;)
If you think you are definitely going to win you're deluded. When the government does this it is essentially a stupidity tax.
5k on one night playing FanDuel (Fantasy Sports). Its kind of like playing the lottery but takes a lil more strategy & someone(s) has to win the money.
larry- since you asked, I remember two of the times I won $500 it went to strip clubs. Once, some of it went to pay for the Foo Fighters concert I went to. The rest was already spent before I could spend it.
Gambling is always going to be hard to control, as some people really believe in it, especially on sporting events. But we should do the best we can to contain it.
But we should not have government run gambling. Repeal the CA lottery, pass federal law to shut them all down. And stop letting banks run cash contests, like double your deposit.
These things aren't exactly taxes, but they get money off of low income people disproportionately.

No, never hit any jackpots. I don’t play enough to keep up with it.
Usually if it’s one of those huge jackpots - I’ll play. Otherwise - I’m out.

To the extent that it is practical, outlaw it.

If Joe or Jane want to run a strip club, or an adult bookstore, or a liquor store. Okay.
But our government should not be running gambling. Shut all of these state lotteries down today!
