Favorite Democratic candidate?

To those on the progressive side of the political spectrum (I don't say "liberal" any more -- it's been misappropriated by the Left): Whom do you favor for the Democratic nomination? To provide some structure, I'll steal Larry Sabato's recent classification into three categories (see http://www.centerforpolitics.org/crystal…):

1st Tier: The Undisputed Frontrunner -- Hillary Clinton
2nd Tier: The Leading Challenger -- Sen. Bernie Sanders
3rd Tier: The Others -- Gov. Martin O'Malley, Larry Lessig (I know -- who?)

From where I'm sitting , they're all loathsome. When I watched the Democratic debate recently, there were two others who have since dropped out: former RI Gov. and Sen. Lincoln Chafee (truly a joke) and former VA Sen. Jim Webb. Webb was the only one with an ounce of sense, and he's gone. There's no room in today's Democratic party for a candidate who opposes [some] gun control, opposes [some] affirmative action, opposes partial birth abortion, and supports a strong national defense. Twenty years ago Webb's views were practically in the Democratic mainstream!

Assuming that Hillary is not indicted for some scandal or another, I think the Democrats' strongest ticket would be her and Julian Castro, former three-term mayor of San Antonio, current Secretary of HUD, and keynote speaker at the 2012 Democratic convention. (Or possibly his twin brother, Congressman Juan Castro.) Hispanics now make up 15% of the population and at least 10% of the electorate.

One of the funniest political things I've heard this year is that Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Democratic National Chairman), when asked on at least two occasions to explain the difference between Democrats and Socialists, was unable to provide an answer. Remember, Bernie Sanders has driven Hillary decidedly leftward this year and is in fact to her right on some issues.

Talk amongst yourselves.

Biden would crush Hillary. Probably has more dirt on her than any one

I think Sanders will eventual screw himself over and be out of it. He comes across (at least to me) as border line insane. That Clinton/Julian Castro line up would be good, but remember, Hillary is old school, so Castro probably not even on her radar as a running mate.

God help me, of all the candidates of the Dems, Joe Biden is the only one that doesn't make me gag.

I am a republican and I'd vote for Biden.

I actually fear Hillary becoming president, I don't feel that way about anyone else. If 1/3 of the stories you hear about her are true, she is just pure evil. Plain and simple.

I like Bernie, but I think he killed himself before he even started by using the word "socialism." So many people write him off after hearing the word, without listening to what he has to say.

I like Bernie, but realistically, odds are that Hillary will be the next president of the US. Which wouldn't upset me, because I like Bill.

I love Sanders because we haven't seen a true far left candidate since Nader pretended to be a Democrat. We have no Socialist Party to offset the Tea Party and I wish we did.

Sanders is as far left as we've seen in a while so I'm voting for him in the primary mostly to shake up the Democrats, much as the Tea Party has shaken up the Republicans. But conservatives better watch their Hillary bashing, because even I think Sanders is too much if he were president, America is too immature to actually handle poor people having an equal footing with the rich. In the general election I expect i'll be voting for Hillary, who is unfortunately to the right of Obama on many issues but my #1 concern in my voting is for a liberal Supreme Court. That's my biggest issue when I decide who to vote for.

shailynn writes: "I am a republican and I'd vote for Biden." This makes absolutely no sense to me. Biden is quite leftwing, probably to the left of Hillary (but not as much of a socialist as Bernie). How in the world could you be a Republican and consider voting for Biden? I don't get it.

tumblingdice writes (quoting the great Charles Barkley): "Poor people have been voting Democrat for fifty years and they are still poor." TD, this is the smartest thing you've ever posted. Maybe we have more in common than I thought.

I don't care for any of them. Bernie is way too left and Hillary is a true political snake. Hillary will win the nomination and has a good shot at the presidency. Though I believe she is beatable by the right opponent.

Bernie, naturally. He doesn't have the first clue about economics, of course, but since the President had little to no control over, or effect on, the economy, that's not really a detriment.

They're all lunatics that will drag this country down further. Just look at democratic controlled cities for proof. Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, Baltimore, LA, etc, riddled with crime and poor people stay poor. Like Barkly said, 50yrs and nothing's changed.
The only one that made any sense was Webb, but the lunatic leftists would never support someone that made sense.

Well, I vote Democrat. There are some differences between the parties that deserve to be talked about: foreign policy, healthcare, education, etc, all deserve to be debated. Any good ideas the GOP might possibly have on these issues, however, is offset by their odd anti-science predilections. Continuing to deny climate change is unacceptable. Bashing gay people is unacceptable. Trying to have creationism/intelligent design taught in public schools is unacceptable. People under 30 (which I am not) largely recognize this, and the GOP--given the demographic changes that are already underway--will eventually be forced to moderate on these issues or become completely nonviable in national elections.

That quote is funny: poor people voting Democratic and they're still poor.... there will always be poor people, but they get a much better deal with Democrats than Republicans. When did Republicans ever increase welfare, make insurance available to the poor or help inner cities? I'm not saying the Democrats have any clue in how to lift people from the cycle of poverty, but to deny that throwing money at the poor should somehow be unpopular with them is just stupid.

The party establishment has literally ducked itself by having presented Hillary as the entitled front runner. She is too polarizing a figure to depend on as a front runner.

I am a huge fan of Bernie, however I really wish Elizabeth Warren would have run.

As a lefty... I'm enjoying the Republican debates. They made the last Dem debate seem boring. The only two candidates on the right who do not scare the shit out of me are Kasich, Bush and Rubio. I do believe Rubio will one day be our president. I just hope it is after another 8-12 years of democratic leadership. There are a lot of Supreme Court seats that will be filled in the next couple of terms.

In my short time here, I've learned a lot. IRL I "read" people. That's my work and I am very good at it. Of course, doing that with nothing other than two dimensional text is very difficult, but not impossible, just not near 100% reliable.

I haven't posted lately and have been, as you people put it, been "lurking".

This topic put me over the edge. If anyone can even remotely consider any those mentioned above, I now know that this "group" of people is top heavy with imbeciles and a total waste of internet bandwidth. Sayonara.

With a population in excess of 318 million it's strange that you don't seem to have better candidates to choose from for the most important job in the world.

celayatable demonstrates how lefties count: "The only two candidates on the right who do not scare the shit out of me are Kasich, Bush and Rubio."
NinaBambina shows how lefties reason: ". . . odds are that Hillary will be the next president of the US. Which wouldn't upset me, because I like Bill." (because, you see, Bill and Hill are so much alike!)
rockstar666 illustrates the fact that lefties don't even realize how leftwing other lefties are: "Hillary is no left wing liberal; I consider her to the right of Obama" (well, yes . . . almost *everyone* is to the right of Obama!)

To Mr_O, who rejects *all* of these candidates and calls us TUSCLers a bunch of imbeciles and a waste of bandwidth, I say: Don't let the virtual door hit you in your supercilious ass on your way out. Buh-bye!

All in good fun -- I hope no one (except Mr_O) is offended by my remarks!

to MrDeuce I noticed that too but in all fairness there is still a year to go before the election I prefer to hedge a for a while and see how all of the issues shake out. There are still lots of events that will take place before both the primaries and the general elections are held, who knows how things will look heading into November 2016

to clubdude: Julian Castro is *totally* on Hillary's radar. From his Wikipedia article:
On October 15, 2015, Castro endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. When Clinton was asked if Castro could be her pick for vice president, she said, "I am going to look really hard at him for anything, because that's how good he is."

I've been predicting since the 2012 Democratic convention, at which Julian Castro gave the keynote address, that he (or his twin brother Juan) will be on a Democratic presidential ticket in the not-so-distant future . . . like 2016. BTW, other keynote speakers in the fairly recent past include Bill Clinton in 1988 and Barack Obama in 2004.
