Do guns really protect people?

AKRON, Ohio — A customer of Christie's Gentleman's Club robbed a dancer of five guns during a home invasion last week, police reports say.
The 31-year-old woman told police that she woke about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday to see a man she met at the club standing over her bed pointing a revolver at her, according to police reports.
The man told the woman: "Don't move, don't say a word," a police report says.
The woman rolled over and covered her face and head while the man rummaged through her purse and jewelry, according to police reports. The man left shortly after.
The man stole five guns, including three revolvers, a semiautomatic pistol, a semiautomatic rifle, two watches, a gold necklace, a cellphone and $146 cash, according to police reports.
The woman called her mother and boyfriend and then police.
The man entered the home by kicking in the door. The woman called the man on her mother's cellphone and left a voicemail demanding he return her guns and money, according to investigators.
The woman and her boyfriend told police that they met the man several months ago at Christie's and another bar called Lilly's, police reports say. The man had been in the woman's house before and knew she kept guns there.
The woman told police that she believes the man recently got out of prison.

I know that last one sounds cruel and demented. But dead bodies can't testify. And in this case if it was a home invasion/burglary.... you are in your right to protect yourself. But you might not be able to live with it mentally.
rock,
"I don't want to take your guns away, but I wouldn't feel safe owning one myself." If all that don't care for guns were that sensible, there wouldn't be a gun debate.
crsm,
"...locked and loaded'''", can get you shot. Even a safety on the gun by your bed could do the same. In the split second you have to decide to get your weapon and use it, forgetting the safety could be fatal. Sort of like those that say don't keep a cartridge chambered. When one decides to use a gun, the fewest "steps" between "I have to fire" and "bang", the better.
If you want to read what the press puts on the back pages or not on the front web page - read http://www.nraila.org/gun-laws/armed-cit… - plenty of use of guns in the right way.
I called my pal Chumlee to be on the look-out
@ clubber... Correct. Fewest steps is correct. Also owning a gun and knowing how to use one is two totally different things. People buy guns to feel safe. yet they don't practice using them. They maybe fire them once a year. that isn't knowing your firearm. You need to be comfortable with use of them. You need to know how to load them, clean them, where the safety is, etc. Now I am not talking people need to take self defense courses or to simulations of home invasions. But you need to know how to use your gun so it is kind of second nature. Lots of things go into gun ownership... safety and use are the two main ones.
@deogal.... great post and you are correct. The media wants to paint a picture that guns are evil.
96% of shots fired by Chicago Police in the line of duty miss the target (as per a family relative who is a cop), and these are trained professionals who are used to dealing with stressful situations. What chance do you have lying in bed, just woke up, against an armed intruder? Especially if you turn on the light...slim to none. You're dead. And if he's unarmed, you just killed someone. I'd rather be robbed than kill someone but that's just me.
I've carried since it was officially legal, before that, I can't say. Anyway, in all those years, I have had my weapon out no more then 3-4 times, and not once did the need arise to use it. Being prepared was as far as I needed to go. And for that, I am thankful.
From the rightwing wacho NRA? Nothing but lies and fabrications. As a liberal, "Facts? We don't need no stinkin' facts!"

@ rockstar..... I never said shot blindly. Again you are putting words in my mouth. You need to know your target. You are sounding like someone who doesn't own a gun or have ever taken firearm safety. And you just quoted Chicago Police.... What is the crime rate in Chicago and in that city it is almost impossible to own a firearm and possess one. But your point is noted. that is where you need to practice or be trained. Again you are not reading what I am saying you are inferring your own thoughts. Also your last comment on how you would rather be robbed than kill someone was something I talked about. Read my last line in my first post!
I wonder about the truthfulness of this. If somebody kicked in my door, I would hear it and wake up. Then I would grab the 12-gauge shotgun under my bed and be ready for the intruder.
Maybe the woman invited the guy in, and then she was robbed.
This isn't a knock at policeman at all. It is just that the public thinks that they are "trained" shooters. Well they are trained....but not always at shooting.
Always something for a good chuckle.
Jestrite...something definitely sound fishy about circumstances in this story

HOW TO INSTALL A SOUTHERN HOME SECURITY SYSTEM
1. Go to Goodwill and buy a pair of size 14-16 men's work boots.
2. Place them on your front porch, along with a copy of Guns & Ammo Magazine.
3. Put four giant dog dishes next to the boots and magazines.
4. Leave a note on your door that reads ......
Bubba,
Me and Marcel, Donnie Ray and Jimmy Earl went for more ammo and beer. Be back in an hour. Don't mess with the pit bulls. They got the mailman this morning and messed him up bad. I don't think Killer took part, but it was hard to tell from all the blood. Anyway, I locked all four of 'em in the house. Better wait outside. Be right back.
