What cracks me up at Hometown Buffet, is seeing some fattie walk back with two plates loaded to the max. Doesn't he know it's all you can eat? That you can go back as many times as you want?
Golden corral is where you go to see why you need to eat right. 500 lbs men, 400 lbs women, and 200 lbs 6 year olds make me think I'll go some place else. But they have that chocolate fountain that runs all day collecting dirt from kids hands, sneeze and fart particle from the air. Don't that make y'all want just go back for more!!! The Oasis in Philly used to have an Italian buffet one day per week the was pretty good. If you got here before it was put out it was fresh and decent. It was limited int selection and only up for an hour or two.
@ GoVikings... I went with my ex brother inlaw and our ex wives because they had all you could eat crab legs. My ex brother in law was the only one that didnt get sick. The only thing that was good was crab legs and that was all he ate. Everything else was cold, past the expiration or otherwise just plain nasty. I usually dont complain too much, but it was rediculous. I asked for money back and they claimed there was no manager on duty and that a manager had to do the refund. They said I could come in the next day and see what they will do. That Golden Corral was in another town so I couldnt go back.
A friend talked me into going to country buffet recently and it was good
Vegas buffets can be good. Wicked Spoon is at Cosmo and it's great though probably surpassed by Bacchanal at Caesar's.
I eat occasionally at an Asian buffet because I like the options. I'll occasionally get roped into Golden Corral or it's ilk by other people. The only good things about those places is the variety.
Pro buffet here. In my long time career, time was often a valuable commodity. Rather than stuff myself, just get what I need as quickly as possible. In a stripclub environment, I easily gain 20-30 minutes productivity vs going to conventional restaurant. With the possible exception of 2 Chinese buffets, haven't had bad experiences in 3 decades of buffet patronage.
The one buffet I truly enjoyed was the one on the cruise ship we cruised on a few years back. 24 hours, always something fresh, different cuisines, damned good food. No need for the dining room, even though we did go there a couple of times.
Enjoy buffets when traveling because I don't need to wait for my food. As far as the Vegas buffets, while once legendary, they are now just overpriced. Had the buffet at Caesar's Palace. It was OK but $55? Not worth it IMHO.
I thought the 18.95 BREAKFAST buffet at The Mirage, 15 years ago was high. I was comped - otherwise I would have passed. That's too much for breakfast.
My favorite of all time was the Grand Aleutian's seafood buffet in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. All you fans of Deadliest Catch know that Dutch is the center of the crab dishing industry, and fresh crab, shrimp and halibut figure prominently
A whopping big thumbs down. I imagine everybody has handled or sneezed on everything, despite all of the sneezeguards up to dissuade that sort of thing. Ew. I'd rather take my chances with food coming straight from the kitchen, although all kinds of nasty stuff happens in there too.
I have eaten crappy, sketchy food all over the world, with uncountable bouts of Montezuma's revenge following this helter skelter dining. Even now I occasionally eat some revolting meals in lousy small town cafes. The unavoidable fact is.....a person's body requires fuel in the form of calories whether those calories come from crap meals or from elegant meals.
I'll pass on any buffet these days, thank you very much.

last commentI will say this though- I like the fact that you have tons of options of foods to pick from.
I have a friend who refuses to eat at buffets. Absolute paranoid germophobe. Me? Bigger things in life to worry about than that.
I would however Not usually visit a restaurant that serves it buffet style.
Just tell your friend that is why they have the sneeze guards. That way the evidence is out there for all to see! :)
As do others, I like the varied selections available via a buffet.
Jimmy or Warren?

But I've eaten at a few in Vegas that blew my mind.
I will occasionally eat at one at a resort though it can be hit or miss. The best one in my recent memory is the one at the Cosmopolitan in Vegas.

That's it. I'm eating at home from now on.
