Strip Club Tax of $10 a Head Being Considered by California Legislature

From the article:

"One enterprising legislator has a wild idea, though: Tax strip club patrons $10 each time they enter an exotic dancing establishment."

Have any other states experienced this? There's discussion at the bottom that suggest it wouldn't pass legal muster in California.

Leave it to Cali to punish the only industry that makes any money. Taxes are so high in Cali businesses are closing and moving every day. A friend of mine closed and moved his business out of California. He said business taxes are going to double in the next 5 years and rather than go bankrupt he decided to move now while he is slow. Taxes on your hotel rooms there are almost as much as the room.

I would not be surprised if every state in the Union enacts a strip club tax. It is a "sin tax" that will only be paid by sinners, giving the politicians more money and making them feel morally superior.

@samsung: yeh, such a tax would definitely help put some of the crappy excueses for strip clubs in san diego out of their misery IMO

I bet they would collect a lot more revenue by increasing taxes on something more people use such as cigarettes. A better idea would be to stop raising taxes and just stop spending so much.

Yes Texas has a $5 "pole" tax. Stripclub patrons are pathetic losers who are only interested in the shameful sexual exploitation of the most beautiful women in society.

The Tax was upheld by the Texas Supreme court because it applied to all Sexually Oriented Businesses (SOB's), not just stripclubs. (Think adult bookstores, video stores, adult toy stores, etc.)

It seems sex makes too much money not to get in on the action.

The stupid assemblyman has no idea of the business he is trying to tax. From the article:

... a nightclub, bar, restaurant, or similar commercial enterprise that does both of the following: (1) Provides for an audience of two or more individuals live nude entertainment or live nude performances. (2) Authorizes on-premises consumption of alcoholic beverages, regardless of whether the consumption of alcoholic beverages is under a license or permit issued under the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act."

Nude clubs in California can't serve alcohol! So it would only apply to topless clubs. It would not apply to bikini clubs or to fully nude clubs with nonalcoholic beverages.

And the idiot assemblyman apparently has also bought off on the myth that there is a link between clubs and violence against women.

Sounds like detroit should put a $10 tax on head.

Or maybe the Assemblyman knows exactly what he's doing. The tax only applies to nude clubs that serve alcohol. But there are no such clubs in California. So the tax actually does nothing, except that it makes the voters think the Assemblyman is doing something.

$10 a head. So that means it will be $20 to get in. right?
