Martin Scorsese: Favorite Movie

Tuesday, November 8, 2022 3:48 AM
I saw Martin Scorsese turns 80 this month and he's still going strong making these films. He's one of these dudes who was already a living legend in the movie world decades ago. I'm not that into movies as much anymore but I have to admit I'm always give him a chance. I don't know if it's considered a true sequel to The Hustler but I loved The Color of Money I think it's Paul Newman's best film. And Number #1 for me has go to be GoodFellas. When you look back, what a cast, great story, great setting, great music, it all came together real good. How about you guys, there's so many even some real recent ones.

I decided to look up his movie list on IMBD....I never knew he directed Michael Jackson's "Bad" video. GoodFellas, Cape Fear, and Taxi Driver are my top three.

Casino - and it’s not even close. I can watch that over and over again. It’s like Shawshank, or Apollo 13 or Jaws for me Goodfellas is ok, but overrated. The Wolf of Wall Street is probably second Did not like Taxi Driver

Goodfellas or Casino. Some others are more "film cred" but those are the most fun.

I’ve seen Casino, Wolf of Wall Street and Goodfellas so many times I’ve lost count. Gangs of NY is excellent as well. Still one that needs to be in the discussion is The Color of Money, but it’s probably impossible to have a bad movie with that cast. I remember reading a review of Departed when it first came out. The reviewer was saying you’re watching the movie for the first time and in the middle of it you’re saying “I can’t believe how fucking good this movie is and you’re so overwhelmed it gets in the way of the script of the movie.”

My favorite is Taxi Driver. It's an accurate portrayal of New York in the seventies. It's not completely accurate, though. The script had a pimp character who, like most pimps in New York at the time, was black. Scorsese changed the pimp from black to white.

Most of those mentioned are great films, but my favorite by far, of Scorsese films, has to be Raging Bull.

“Most of those mentioned are great films, but my favorite by far, of Scorsese films, has to be Raging Bull.” I need to give it another try. It’s ranked as the one of the best films of all time, but I’ve tried watching it several times and can’t get past the first 30-40 minutes.

    1) Goodfellas- Range of music soundtrack, and loads of memorable quotes. Now get your shinebox ! 2) Casino - Who could forget Joe Pesci's performance there, the F-bomb harangue in the middle of the desert, etc. 3) The Departed- "I don't adapt to my environment, I adapt the environment to me."

@Motorhead Before watching this movie some familiarity with the story, the plot, and the era which this film is set, probably helps, it is a bit understated, and didn't do that well at the box office when it came out, but damn DeNiro becomes "The Raging bull" and Cathy Moriarity is so believable as Vicky, also this is Joe Pesci's breakout role, he goes from an unknown to a star as a result of this picture, the movie may not be everyone's favorite, but it definitely is one of mine.

Scorsese is the master! The Departed, Casino, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, The Aviator, The King of Comedy, After Hours, on and on, the man is the Master!

I've seen Wolf of Wall Street the most times out of any of his films. Taxi Driver is one of his best. Also really like Casino and The Departed.

Many greats to choose from. But when I saw the thread title, I thought of "Martin Scorsese's Favorite Movie" ... and he has said that is: "The Red Shoes" I have it on 4K Ultra HD disc, and it is remarkably beautiful. I also like the album by Kate Bush based on the same story.

Sadly almost all of his greatest films are with either DeNiro or DiCaprio, two talented actors who have used their success to transform themselves into rotten fucking scumbags.

How could I leave out "The Aviator"? The knock against that is it's a bit long. Howard Hughes was certainly an iconic, eccentric, and interesting character.

    The Aviator was very good

Goodfellas. I do have to say that After Hours is greatly underrated compared to many of his movies. That is one whacked out, but really funny flick.

Goodfellas and Taxi were great and ground breaking. Casino was very good. Wolf and Gangs of NY sucked. I don’t get into stories about middle aged adults acting like asshole teenagers. The Departed was pretty good, but it wasn’t original or true - it was a remake of some BS French movie. It tried to seem like it was based on a true Whitey Bulger story, but it was all made up with names and places plugged into the French story.

I've never seen Gangs of NY. I've tried to watch it but it just sucks so bad. Shutter Island a okay book turned into a shitty movie. The Irishman sucked worst of all!! What a fucking colossal waste of my time. I can't sit through most of his shit from the 70s. Those movies are just so fucking slow and take so long to get started. Casino, Goodfellas, and The Departed were pretty good. His only saving graces. Otherwise, Marty is one of the most OVERRATED directors of all time.

Agree - the Irishman SUCKED! Book was very good but it was mostly bullshit made up by the dying Irishman
