How I got an education in Gnosticism. Now this was 25 years ago. I walked into a familiar cafe (something similar to Viet Coffee and Hooters ) and sat down and ordered and started to read:

    https://www.amazon.com/Gnostic-Book-Hour…

Young waitress ( young hottie nicely painted up, in stripper shoes and a very skimpy school uniform ) came up and asked me what I was reading. So I did my best to explain about Gnosticism and about the Nag Hammadi scriptures. She listened. Then finally she said that it didn't really resonate with her, because she didn't really go along with Christianity.

I was flabbergasted. To her, it was just like Jim Bakker had come into her cafe and was reading the Bible. As I saw it, Gnosticism was the antidote to christianism. But she did not need any such antidote, because she could just dismiss it all out of hand. She was not neurotic.

So this is the problem with Gnosticism, and the Martinist version, that it only means anything to people who are taken in by conventional religion.

So looking at refs coming from Hans Thomas Hakl's Eranos

    https://www.amazon.com/Eranos-Alternativ…

Why did so many people, like Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell go along with the Nazis? Why are so many esotericists taken in by authoritarian regimes?

It has a lot to do with how Gnosticism has been conceived, and so many are challenging this.

Having a hard time finding Karen Armstrong's writings about this. She has written many books.

1980, so LaVey had his group running by mid-1960's

There always have been lots of high profile crimes there. But actual crime stats do not always go along with the level of outrage.

    So this book, 1980,

The Satanic Cult Hardcover – January 1, 1980, 165 pages for the central text, looks good.
    by Gerhard P Zacharias

was actually first published in German in 1964. Now with this 1980 English translation the author wrote a forward page. It talks about the Counter Culture and the Anti-War movement, especially in Germany.

He does not mention Anton LaVey. I actually agree with that, his stuff is just an adult Halloween Party.

But he does mention the movie Rosemary's Baby, and Charles Manson, and the Tate - LaBianca murders. He says that Manson, was with Scientology and that that was started by someone inspired by Aleister Crowley. All true.

Most of the references are in German, so it is hard.

But it has on page 86 a drawing reprinted of a Black Mass. This has a naked woman on the altar. Talks about for Madame de Montespan, for book by Jules Bois, Le Satanisme et la Mgaie, Paris 1903

    here:
    https://www.amazon.com/Satanisme-magie-F…

    https://www.amazon.com/Jules-Bois/e/B00D…

His name is found often, but not much available of his books.

    Also mentions

The satanic mass ; a sociological and criminological study. (1955)

    and then there is
The Satanists / edited by Peter Haining (1970)

Zacharias does not talk about Yezidi, except in an end note.

This book is really interesting, extended quote:
    https://tuscl.net/discussion.php?id=2986…

Zacharias shows that Dionysius, a good of darkness, came out of the cult of the Minotaur on Crete. Then Dionysius is paired with Apollo, the god of light. The ancient Greeks had many of these light and dark pairs.

And then the idea of Satan developed in the Old Testament, starting with the angel who was part of the Balaam story in Numbers.

But it really only came into its own in juxtaposition to Christianity.

Satanism is usually a protest against Christianity, a protest against the power distribution which follows it, and a way of speaking to that which is repressed.

And the highest development of Satan are found in the Beast and the Anti-Christ in Revelations.

Talking about the Medieval Golden Age, p77ff

'... Jules Michelet made a reconstruction of the sabbath ritual in which he attributed detailed functions to the priestess corresponding to the Queen of the Sabbath. Her body is said to have served as a 'living altar' but I have found no support for this in the sources, although it influenced some later publications on the black mass, particularly French ones. As far as I know the body of a woman was not used as an altar for the black mass before the second half of the seventeenth century.

    continuing:

    pp83ff

It is here that the dualistic Christian conception is most clearly expressed, in contrast to that of the Greeks, who gave Aphrodite the nickname 'Kallipygos', 'she of the beautiful buttocks'. The Christian conception of the posterior area is connected with the taboo on the dark primeval Great Female. The example of the well-known 'Venus of Willendorf', which dates from paleolithic times, shows that the posterior parts of prehistoric goddesses were notably broad and full; their 'firm seat' upon the earth is obvious.

    "
We come now to the sexual orgies of the sabbath. ....

... and the Spanish source describes a woman after copulation with Satan as 'very proud and satisfied'.

    .
    .
    .
There is no doubt that the sabbath orgies have not only an individual psychological significance, but an archetypal one as well.
    .
    .
    .
...referring to their sexual experiences at the sabbath, speak of 'contentment', 'joy', 'an agreeable and pleasant thing'.
...speaks of 'a wonderful sensual delight' and the fact that afterwards the women feel 'complete fulfillment'. These expressions denote a sexual experience beyond personal feeling or symbolic definition...

    "
The sabbath orgy is not a means of ecstatic liberation from the fetters of the body, but rather the contrary: a descent to the physical and animal level, there to become a part of the great pleasure-giving and yet painful force which has been largely repressed or sublimated in Christian cultures.

So, done with the book, it is Satanic Cult because the author sees it as one continuous cult which has grown up along side of Christianity. Its golden era was the middle ages, but it still continues to this day.

Other stuff out there which is not presented as Satanism, which I find more interesting. Though Satanic Temple is currently doing great political work, really great.

Was actually first published in German in 1964. Now with this 1980 English translation the author wrote a forward page. It talks about the Counter Culture and the Anti-War movement, especially in Germany.

So he calls this Satanic Cult, singular, as it is a cult which has developed as a protest against Christianity and as a protest against it. It came to its apex in the middle-ages.

Originally God and Satan were one. Then they were separated, as the Greeks had these pairs of gods of light and gods of dark. I think it was like this for Zoroastrianism too. And then Christianity tried to submerge this dark god.

For the Satanists, they want the alter to be female. They see it as the hearth. She is the altar, not really the offering.

They have always invoked Psalm 45
    https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?se…

    SJG

    Awesome picture
    https://tuscl.net/photo.php?id=3717

Female assistants move her from her visit to the toilet, to the altar:
    https://tuscl.net/photo.php?id=9088

Then they unhitch her wrists, and then hitch her up on the altar:
    https://tuscl.net/photo.php?id=9087

Now we won't make her wait in restraints very long, lest she need to again use the bathroom. A Deacon had been doing the opening. Once the offered woman is hitched up, the Presider enters and gives an incantation over her, and then he unrobes, climbs on, and does her. She might be pre-lubed. Then all of the women are fair game, and the men are expected to do all of them. No one is in restraints, but they won't need to be restrained. Restraints to start off are just theater.

    https://www.amazon.com/Satanic-Mass-H-T-…

    https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2717…

Rhodes had written 10 earlier books. His focus seems to be the Sociology of Criminality.

But this book is not really like that. It is more about the underlying beliefs of Satanism.

He says that in Masonic rituals you find a legacy of the Templars, Cathars, and Bogomils.

He also credits A. E. Waite for permission to quote from his translation of Eliphas Levi.

Waite passed away in 1940. So Rhodes must have been looking into this subject matter for a long time.

Rhodes's book is widely disseminated and often referenced, even though it is quite old now.

No one knows what the relationship between Masonry and Rosicrucianism actually is. Seems like they can be very related. Some say Rosicrucianism comes from the Cathars. And Rhodes is saying that Masonry includes stuff from Templars, Cathars, and Bogomils. But it also seems to have stuff from Solomon's Temple and from Ancient Egypts Temples. Manly Palmer Hall says the main Masonic Ritual comes from the Egyptain myth of the murder of Osiris.

So yes, all these things could connect. What is warped is exoteric religion, which has been designed to control and hide.

And then connecting to Satanism? Well Satanism seems to be just a way of opposing Christianity. In many cases it blasphemes it.

Don't really need to do this today, but the central idea does apply in otherways, opposing other things which go without question in our society.

So yes, I want to understand this book.

Starting to get a sense of where H. T. F. Rhodes is at. Specializing in the Sociology of Crime, he looks at Satanism as deviant behavior. We would not necessarily call it crime, but in the middle-ages they did. So there was this crime, and there have been people who have investigated it.

Sirach speaks of the return of the goddess.

    The Goat

    Ormuzd and Ahriman

    "Little Cord", the Templars

Two sources of information on the Great Deceiver and his clients. They are the Demonologies and the Inquisition.

A shadow church and extreme and unfounded fears of it!

    Not unlike today!

Reading more of H.T.F. Rhodes. He talks about this Palladium Order of Masons

    Palladium, Order of
Said to have been a Masonic order, also entitled the Sovereign-Council of Wisdom, founded in Paris on May 20, 1737. It initiated women under the name of "Companions of Penelope." As proof of its existence, Jean Marie Ragon, the Masonic antiquary, published its ritual.

The "Palladium" was also one name used by Leo Taxil (Gabriel Jogand-Pagés ) to refer to the Masonic order he made a part of his 1880s hoax, which was aimed at showing that the Roman Catholic church secretly sponsored freemasonry.

    https://www.encyclopedia.com/science/enc…

    Jogand-Pagès, Gabriel (1854-ca. 1906)
Nineteenth-century French journalist who, under the name "Léo Taxil," perpetrated an extraordinary and prolonged hoax in which he claimed to have exposed devil worship within Freemasonry. Jogand's motives are not entirely clear even today, but it seems that his hoax was also designed to embarrass the Roman Catholic church.

In 1892 a book entitled Le Diable du XIXe Siècle was published in Paris, attributed to "Dr. Bataille." For a time the book was thought to be the work of Dr. Charles Hacks, who contributed a preface entitled "Revelations of an Occultist." Hacks was a real, although shadowy, figure. It was not until five years later that the hoax was revealed by Jogand himself.

The groundwork for the hoax began as early as 1885 when Jogand, as Léo Taxil, edited an anticlerical newspaper. He began to publish exposés of Freemasonry, claiming that there were lodges that practiced rites deriving from the Manichaean heresy. With the publication of "Dr. Bataille's" book, Jogand introduced a sinister high priestess of satanic Freemasons. She was Diana Vaughan, said to be a descendant of the seventeenth-century alchemist Thomas Vaughan. She had been chosen as a high priestess of Lucifer to overthrow Christianity and win the world over to Satanism, Jogand wrote. Diana was supposed to head a feminine cult of Freemasonry named Palladism. Periodicals claiming to emanate from the Palladium were published by Jogand.

His next audacious stroke was to announce that Diana Vaughan had been converted from Satanism to the true Roman Catholic faith. Her Memories d'une Ex-Palladist (1895-97) attracted enormous interest and enthusiasm. They were read by Pope Leo XIII, together with a short devotional work supposedly composed by Vaughan, and His Holiness responded with a papal benediction. It seemed that Jogand himself had repented of his former freethinking and created a saintly impression. He was received in private audience by the pope, who had expressed approval of his anti-masonic writings, and an anti-masonic congress was summoned in 1887 at Trent, famous for its sixteenth-century council.

    The Satanic Mass, H. T. F. Rhodes, 1954, first US edition 1955

The book is hilarious, though I could not see that first off.

His main idea, which I don't know that all scholars would go along with, was that the pivotal event was when the Church Massacred the Cathars, their movement just transformed. Their idea was that the exoteric church and its God were really the Devil.

Now, Cathars would never worship the Devil. But when people worship the Devil, they are parodying exoteric Church. They are doing what it does. So they are making fun of its people, fun of its clergy, and making fun of its God.

Spritualism Freemasonry were, from the Catholic point of view, the twin devils of the 19th century, and they were the more alarming because they really represented the drift of 19th century spiritual thought. so Rhodes is talking about the glory time of Satanism, the 17th Century, and how the image of Satan started with the Cathar view of the God of organized religion, and then how it developed into Baphomet, and along the way into something feminine, Ashtar. The he goes on to talk about the Ancient Semites and how they had no marriage and were matrilineal.

    ^^^ pg 87

The dominant features of the two-faced Satan of the 17th century are those of the mother-goddess.
    .
    .
    .
    The name was Astaroth.
    .
    .
    .
There are such variants as Ashtart, Ashtoreth, Astarte, Attar and Ash-tar-tu and many more. Doubts have also been thrown upon the sex of the enigmatic figure, but it now seems to be generally agreed that Ashtar is a feminine form, or at least that no other more specifically feminine form exist.
    .
    .
    .
Ashtar is a feminine form, or at least that no other more specifically feminine form exists.
    .
    .
    .
Ashtar was the goddess of the ancient Semites before the separation of the tribes. There was then no marriage because the fathers of the children were men of other tribes who had no permanent relationship wiht their mates. Descent was therefore through the mother. The chief tribal deity was the counter part of the human matriarch.

The bitterness of the controversy between Mason and anti-Mason at that time is difficult to appreciate today. Masonry, particularly in the Latin countries, was virulently anti-clerical, and many of its less orthodox lodges were frankly atheistic. ... A well known French bishop of the period did not hesitate to describe Masonry as the 'Synagogue of Satan' and he later wrote a book under that title

    continuing with H.T.F. Rhodes

Jeanne-Marie Bouvier de la Motte-Guyon (commonly known as Madame Guyon, French: 13 April 1648 – 9 June 1717) was a French mystic and was accused of advocating Quietism, although she never called herself a Quietist. Quietism was considered heretical by the Roman Catholic Church, and she was imprisoned from 1695 to 1703 after publishing the book A Short and Very Easy Method of Prayer.

I think this is really funny. This was a long time ago, but the Catholic Church was declaring heritics people who just wanted to engage in silent prayer, meaning not profess allegiance to the herd. This Quietism was rather like Catharism.

Versailles presents us with a picture of violent sexual action and reaction which is perhaps unique in history. In 1675, for example, His Majesty suffered one of his periodical attacks of religion. The King began to discourage open adultery and illicit love-affairs generally. Women were forbidden to appear in his presence with their faces made up, and regular attendance at Mass was imposed under pain of severe reprimand. A swarm of Jesuits invaded the palace.

It is much more likely that pagan Europe reacted to Christianity in exactly the same way that their Roman masters had formerly done. The Christians were not persecuted in ancient Rome because they professed Christianity, but because they said that man must hold that faith and none other. Britons and Franks no doubt held the same view as the Romans. They were ready to add Christianity to the beliefs they already held, but they did not want to sacrifice the older and well-loved mysteries.

... Christianity met them half-way. The chrisitanization of Europe was a very gradual process which continued for many centuries, and it was not attended with that kind of persecution which Rome had meted out to Christianity so soon ...

From the 6th to the 12th century laws and ordinances were constantly made forbidding idolatrous offerings, the worship of devils and witchcraft. But the punishment was penance only.
    .
    .
    .
As late as the end of the 13th century, a priest was brought before the ecclesiastical court for leading his parishioners in a fertility dance before the phallic image of a god. Although severely reprimanded, he was not deprived.
    .
    .
    .
The ordinances continually exhort men not to assumre the skins of goats and bulls, nor to wear head-dresses representative of animals 'because this is devilish'. But neither the worshippers themselves nor even those whose business it was to discourage the worship of strange gods thought these popular devotions anti-christian. The priest who so far forgot himself as to pay homage to the Phallus in a dance probably pleaded that it was a local custom and nothing more than a festival game. His bishop, if a man of humanity and common sense, took him at his word.

    .
The notorious example of Louis XIV who would share his bed and board with almost any woman except his wife set the normal standards of sexual behaviour. Chastity in women was openly derided.

Sexual laxity does not automatically establish feminine supremacy, but it may create conditions which encourage it.

The fashion in morality which Louis XIV set his court was scarcely an edifying one. It was even less so since the king worshipped Venus and his Christian God by turns.
    "

Most all that we know about them comes from their accusers. But what seems likely to be true, as other have noted, resembles the practice of tantric sex. More than anything it seems to be sex which is not intended for procreation, and it is this which inflames the leaders of Christian Orthodoxy and eventually resulted in purges.

The Theory and Practice of Sexual Magic, Exemplified by Four Magical Groups in the Early Twentieth Century

Now I had read a lot of this before, and I think it raises far more questions than it answers. These groups are kind of shadowy, and the sources are usually not in English. Particularly in this Giuliano Kremmerz, I feel that there is laid out the potential of a connection to the Memphis-Misharim Masons. They don't directly say that this is there, but I think they open the door to it. And then there is a connection in modern times to the infamous Red Brigades.

So starting with Fraternitas Saturni, they affirm that it started in Berlin, on Easter, 1928. But it has actually started 2 years earlier, May 1926. Bookseller Eugen Grosche ( Order name Gregor A. Gregorius, 1888 - 1964 ). And the FS derived from the Pansohische Loge ( Pansophical Lodge of Lightseeking Brethren of the Orient), led by bookseller Heinrich Tranker (order name Recnartus, 1880-1956).

FS sees itself as placed under the sign of Saturn, which is considered to be the opposite of the Sun, and implies a solitary, hard, and elitist approach to spiritual development. The Order is pronouncedly anti-Christian.

FS is not primarily a sex magical order like the O.T.O. Sex magical rituals and writings play only a minor role. ( I had gleaned this myself from the Flowers book )

Still, the phallus is seen as the earthly manifestation of divine power, with semen as its vehicle; and the vagina symbolizes chaos as the creative ground of being.

FS teaches tantric practices for transforming the generative powers into spiritual energy.

What we know of the FS is from Adolph Hemberger (1929-1992). He collected the teachings of secret societies.

He was a professor of Scientific Methodology at Giessen University. Under the alias Dr. Klingsor, Hemberger published Experimental-Magie.

So this is one of the things I was looking to get new info about:

    They talk about Count Cagliostro.

Count Alessandro di Cagliostro was the alias of the occultist Giuseppe Balsamo. Cagliostro was an Italian adventurer and self-styled magician. He became a glamorous figure associated with the royal courts of Europe where he pursued various occult arts, including psychic healing, alchemy and scrying.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alessandro…

Cagliostro left England to visit Rome, where he met two people who proved to be spies of the Inquisition. Some accounts hold that his wife was the one who initially betrayed him to the Inquisition. On 27 December 1789 he was arrested for attempting to found a Masonic lodge in Rome.

So lots of people associated with Memphis-Mishraim Masons
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rite_of_Me…

    https://aprmm.info/us

^^^ here it says it came from Cagliostro's Egytpian Rite.

The Order of Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis and Misraim, originates from Cagliostro’s Egyptian Rite of Freemasonry presented to the world in 1777.

And yes, it is the same guy!

After Giuseppe Garibaldi, the post of Gran Hyerophant of the Rite was inherited by an English Freemason John Yarker, after that – Theodor Reuss (cofounder of O.T.O, Ordo Templi Orientis), Gérard Anaclet Vincent Encausse (Papus).

So Giuliano Kremmerz lived from (1861-1930) His stuff totally unknown in English until the late 1980's when a group known as Prometeo/Agape, under the leadership of Paolo Fogagnolo (an ex member of the Red Brigades) published the "Corpus" of Kremmerz in a small and very high priced limited edition.

All kinds of accusations and street fighting between Kremmerzian groups broke out. Some of these groups were shut down.

So the real name of Giuliano Kremmerz (1861-1930) was Ciro Formisano. And he lived his life in Portici, near Naples.

It was the Naples location and the timing which made me suspect that all of these peoples connect, and also to Julius Evola and Maria de Nagloska.

Now Forminsano was involved in Scuola di Napoli (School of Naples) and this was pagan and strongly anti-Christian.

School of Naples was believed to have been founded by Prince Raimondo di Sangro di San Severo.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raimondo_d…

He was an alchemist and the first Grand Master of Freemasonry in Naples.

And Count Cagliostro in Naples was the founder of his Egyptian Rites, and he was a flamboyant occultist.

Where did San Jose's Roscicrucian Order AMORC founder Harvey Spencer Lewis get his style and his voice?

Lewis is listed as being associated with the Memphis-Misraim, or Egyptian Rite, Masons.  This was started by  Alessandro Cagliostro in 1784, then consolidated in Naples by Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1881

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rite_of_Me…

John Yarker, Theordore Reuss, and Robert Ambelin are among those who would eventually serve as head.

These would seem to be web sites for the most authoritative continuing org.

Of Memphis and of Misraim, the Oriental Silence of the Winged Sun: History of the Egyptian Rites of Freemasonry; its Rites, Rituals and Mysteries Paperback – October 4, 2018
    by Milko Bogard
    https://www.amazon.com/Memphis-Misraim-O…
^^^^^^^^  and this has a chapter on the Egyptian Rite of F.U.D.O.S.I. (an AMORC initiative led by H. S. Lewis's successor and son Ralph M. Lewis in the decade following WWII)

So Memphis-Misraim would indeed appear to be the source of Lewis's Rosicrucian Order AMORC.

But where exactly did Lewis get his voice?

On the lower corners of monographs Lewis would put an insignia of the O.T.O.  Some assume this shows a connection to Aleister Crowley.  But it is actually because Lewis received a charge from Crowley's predecessor Theodore Reuss.

Reading:  Hidden Intercourse, Eros and Sexuality in the History of Western Esotericism, ed Wounter J. Hanegraaff and Jeffrey J. Kripal

So in a chapter about by Hugh Urban: The Yoga of Sex: Tantra, Orientalism, and Sex Magic in the Ordo Templi Orientis, we find:

    pg  418ff

"The original inspiration for or spiritual father of the O.T.O. is usually identified as Carl Kellner (1851-1905)....The primary architect of the O.T.O., however was Kellner's associate, Theodor Reuss (1855-1923)......"Irregular" forms of Masonry such as the Ancient and Accepted Primitive Rite of Memphis and Mizraim.......During the 1890's, Reuss claims to have collaborated with Kellner in order to form a new "Academia Masonica" that would enable all Freemasons to become familiar with all existing degrees and systems of Masonry.  This appears to have been the original inspiration for the O.T.O., as a complex fusion of Craft Masonry, Rosicrucianism, and various Eastern imports, above all the techniques of Hindu Tantra.

[Reuss]"Let it be known that there exists, unknown to the great crowd, a very ancient order of sages, whose object is the amelioration and spiritual elevation of mankind....  This Order has existed already in the most remote. prehistoric times, and it has manifested its activity secretly and openly in the world...it has caused social and political revolutions and proved to be the rock of salvation in times of danger and misfortune."
[Doesn't Reuss sound like H. Spencer Lewis?]

    [Reuss, 1904]
'One of the secrets which our Order possesses to its highest degree consists in the fact that it supplies the properly prepared brother with the PRACTICAL means to erect the true Temple of Solomon in Man and to find again the "lost Word": namely, that our Order supplies to the initiated and chosen brother the practical means to obtain proof of his immortality even during his earthly existence...This secret is one of the true secrets of Masonry and exclusively the secret of the Occult High Degree of Our Order.  It has come down to our Order by word of mouth from the fathers of all true Freemasonry, the "Wise Men of the East"."

    [Reuss, 1912]
"Our Order possess the KEY which opens up all Masonic and Hermetic secrets, namely, the teaching of sexual magic, and this teaching explains, without exception, all the secrets of Nature, all the symbolism of FREEMASONRY and all systems of religion. Now, although this teaching of sexual magic is the secret of the O.T.O. and is not suitable for publication in a pamphlet which reaches wide circles, nevertheless the management of the Order has decided to lift a very small tip of the veil which conceals our secret...to enlighten earnest seekers."

    All emphasis as in originals

Now in the early 90's AMORC fell into bad times, a bad leader, who was being influenced by operatives of some very bad things. He tried to run off with the money. The resolution was that French AMORC would take over. And they have made huge improvements. This Reuss inspired claim to unique knowledge which H. Spencer Lewis used is gone. But it is still not clear that AMORC today has what it will take to be long term viable.

Giuliano M. Kremmerz (1861–1930) born Ciro Formisano, was an Italian alchemist working within the tradition of hermeticism. In 1896, Kremmerz founded the Confraternita Terapeutica e Magica di Myriam (Therapeutic and Magic Brotherhood of Myriam).

I am not saying that I know that Memphis Misraim is a sex magick group.

And I have never seen anything to suggest that AMORC is a sex magick group.

That Rosicrucian Society in Williamsburg Pennsylvania is to at least some extent. They claim the legacy of Paschal Beverly Randolph. He published his Eulis in 1874 and that seemed to be what opened the door to sex magick. It was in the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor, and its American offshoot.

This was started between the Theosophical Society and the Golden Dawn. It was Randolph's book which made the difference.

And then Memphis Misraim got going in Naples in 1881. Even if it was never a sex magick group, there were lots of other such groups which would get going in Naples. And some seem to be still going today, at least into the late 1980's

I think Memphis Misraim was a lot better than AMORC, cause it was founded by more authoritative people, not so positive thinking, New Thought, influenced like H. S. Lewis was.

I am convinced though that Lewis got his voice and his style from Theodore Ruess.

    The Gnostic New Age
by April D. DeConick, (2016) and she is at Rice University in Houston Texas.

She wants to say that the new age religion is a resurgence of the ancient world's Gnosticism. Not sure if I will go along with this. But there have for sometime been others saying this. One of them is Harold Bloom.

As I see it, Gnosticism has to be the diametric opposite of the I AM A CHRISTIAN CULT, otherwise there is no reason for it, it would be meaningless. But Bloom sees the Born Again Movement and all American religion today as Gnostic.

Two interesting books, both written about the same time, and both starting with Ezekiel's Vision of the Chariot. These books span the gap between religious and occult kabbalah, and the later does not use the Tree of Life diagram.

This Simon Magus was really quite a character.

There had been Dositheus, a successor to John the Baptist, and he had this woman Luna. He was challenged by Simon of Gitta (later known as Simon Magus) and he took over the operation and over Luna, who's real name was Helena.

DeConick sees the good in Paul and she shows why a lot of Gnostics like him. But she also shows how he doubled back on himself and on his Damascus Vision.

She works a lot with these movies with religious themes which promote gnosticism.

She shows how John's Gospel was liked by both Catholics and Gnostics, and it does seem to be in part drawn from Gnostic sources.

From other sources, it is believed that John's Gospel was promulgated to replace the Thomas Gospel.

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120655/

Seems to be a very dark themed film, and she uses this to show the gnostic interpretation of John's Gospel, and the original author's intent remains unclear. But John is very moving, and this is why:

    Dark City (1998)
    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118929/?re…

And then she gets into initiatic experiences with:

Altered States (1980) dir Ken Russell
    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080360/?re…

She talks about one Cerinthus, a gnostic interpreter of John.

Michael Allen Williams (1996) Rethinking "Gnosticism": An Argument for Dismantling a Dubious Category.

Each of these gnostic groups has its own story of cosmology, creation, fall, and reintegration. They just don't always call them by these names. They always have some explanation for why life might seem off balance. Or to use the Sanskrit term, samsara, the wagon wheel squeaks on its axle.

But the stories which orthodoxy uses always fault rebelliousness and disobedience, and the remedy is always acts of submission.

And as this was starting to wash out of Orthodoxy, we had a Reformation which reignited it and used this to promulgate itself.

And then in more recent time there is every generation a new wave of Evangelicals, promoting submission to The Idol. This seems to come every generation because people have been living lives of drugs, alcohol, and breeding. And then as their own children are reaching adolescence, they feel they need some greater claim to authority over them. So, they Get Saved.

I helped to put a Pentecostal Daughter Molester into San Quentin, and I explained all of this in great detail to the D.A.'s Office. Learning to live in your own skin is a life's work. But this defendant belongs to a church which is committed to the exact opposite. The three daughters are the ones who paid the costs.

The gnostic groups, including Martinists, see the path of reintegration as one of gaining knowledge and deep understanding. This is what gnosis is. Your eyes have to become opened, and you have to become like God yourself.

    The Gnostic New Age
    by April E. DeConick

    p176

Second-century Gnostic rites fall into four categories: ceremonies to awaken or quicken the spirit from unconsciousness; ceremonies to mature the fledgling spirit into an adult divinity; and ceremonies to integrate the mature spirit, the real self, with its transcendent root. The process brings healing because it repairs the separation that was the root cause of the person's anxiety and fear, without completely wiping out the individual's identity.

So the Gnostics were not Buddhists. The spirit does not experience emptiness, nor is it reabsorbed into its root so that it no longer exists individually. The Gnostic rites ensure that the personal spirit has grown its own identity, which then unites with its source.

She deals with John's Gospel, a Gnostic reading. And she looks at Chapter 4, the Samaritan Woman at the well. Gnosticism did focus on recruiting Samaritans, and Simon Magus was a big part of this. As Tobias Churton writes, "He was the original Jesus."

I've developed a profound interest in Gnorticism. I have spent a lot of time recently reading the Gnortic Bible. A lot of people aren't familiar with this very small cult of people that worship Gnort as a deity.

Tradition speaks of the Cathars of the French Languedoc, the "Church of the Pure" or the "Bons hommes" as the descendants of the same Gnostic type.

1209, Pope Innocent III launched the Albigensian Crusade, slaughtering the entire region. "Kill them all, God will know his own!"

Albigensian Crusade lasted more than thirty years, which eventually spawned the Inquisition.

Descendants escaped to Montsegur, northern Spain, or as some traditions speak, through the liens of Robert the Bruce and the Oder of the Thistle.

    Jules Doinel and Englise Gnostique

Experienced a vision in 1888 of the "Aeon Jesus", who consecrated him as a Patriarch, continuing the Cathar line.

09/21/1890, Jules Doinel "spiritually founded" a Neo-Albigensian "Gnostic Church".

Held seances to contact Cathars, Gnostic spirits, "Sophia Achamoth", etc.

Seances and the contacted names were used to verify Doinel's legitimacy.

Doinel took the name Valentin II & consecrated Bishops who prefaced their name with "Tau", representing the Greek Tau or the Egyptian Ankh (Papus, Sedir).

Combined theological doctrines of Valentinus, Marcus, Simon Magus, Cathars.

The lord or lady of the left-hand path is someone who has prevailed against the laws of the mechanical universe -- the laws of stupidity, blind obedience to brute force, and eternal death of intelligence -- and created from the substance of the self, by means of will, an immortal identity. In and of itself, this is the greatest stance of defiance against the universe. Such a sovereign individual stands alone amidst the storms and stresses all about -- yet is not alone.

So Flowers gives much credit to Helena Blavatsky for the "Magical Revival". AIK, that terminology comes from the title of a Kenneth Grant.

Now he says the O.T.O. comes from an idea from John Yarker and Carl Kellner. Both Masons.

And the Fraternitas Saturni comes from the OTO and from this Panosophy by Heinrich Tranker, also a Mason.

All of these groups could claim Masonic lineage. They could get any other lineage they wanted too, even Apostolic Descent. I think what is is simply that Masons and Martinists decided that they wanted to be Right Hand Path groups, where as O.T.O. and Fraternitas Saturni decided that they wanted to be Left Hand Path groups.

These groups are completely incestuous and any of them could claim any lineage that the others do, and they could do anything that any of the others do.

Some are attracted to the Left Path and some to the Right Path.

So Kellner claimed to have developed a system of sexual magic by traveling to the east, just like Christian Rosenkreuz did.

But more likely is that he derived his ideas from the French branch of the school of the American occultist Paschal Beverly Randolph (1825-1875)

The left-hand path is the way of the hero: the path of those who, having understood their own divinities, would dare to breach the gates of eternity and eat of the tree of life eternal. To stand against the intertia and ignorance of the whole of the universe, to strive against that which would thwart all intelligence and life, and to prevail against it -- this is the aim of the sinister path.

The left-hand path is simply the way of nonunion, individuation, and independence. By contrast, the right-hand path is the way of union, collectivization, and dependence. The essence of the left-hand path has nothing to do with "evil." In fact, those who follow the left-hand path (by any name) today most closely approximate the ancient ideal of seeking the agathon, "the Good." On the left-hand path, initiates seek to develop the self to the point of divinity; this heightened sense of self, once sufficiently developed, prevents any acts of true evil on the part of initiates because they have to come know and understand the Good.

The God of orthodox theologians is, for Blavatsky, the source true evil in the world, which is equated with "an antagonizing blind force in nature; it is reaction, opposition, and contrast."

In The Secret Doctrine she writes:

In human nature, evil denotes only the polarity of matter and Spirit, a struggle of life between the two manifested Principles in Space and Time, which principles are one per se inasmuch they are rooted in the Absolute. In Kosmos, the equilibrium must be preserved. The operations of the two contraries produce harmony, like the centripetal and centrifugal forces which are necessary to each other -- mutually inter-dependent-- "in order that both should live." If one is arrested, the action of the other will become immediately self-destructive.

I think the issue is just that O.T.O. and Fraternitas Saturni decided that they wanted to be Left-Hand Path, whereas Masons and Martinists decided they wanted to be Right-Hand Path.

And then the author of "Meditations on the Tarot" was extremely Right-Hand Path, the quintessential counter revolutionary.

Best to have access to both Left and Right, and the Middle too, but the left groups are harder to get going, and they are much more controversial.

I think that because of the people who started it, Memphis-Misraim should be a Left-Hand group.

Martinists, maybe if you look to Emanuel Swedenborg or Jakob Böhme, or Papus, maybe. But others were Right-Hand. To make it Left-Hand I think you would have to reinvent it from zero.

AMORC should have been left hand, but H. S. Lewis corrupted it with all this Think and Grow Rich and New Thought stuff from that era. A Left-Hand group might not have gotten the revenue that AMORC did in this country. AMORC should have been an arm of Memphis Misraim.

talking about the criterion for the Left-Hand Path.

"The second criterion, antinomiamism, states that practitioners think of themselves as "going against the grain" of their culturally conditioned and conventional norms of "good" and "evil." True lords and ladies of the left-hand path will have the spiritual courage to identify with the cultural norms of "evil". There will be an embracing of the symbols of conventional "evil," or "impurity," or "rationality," or whatever the conventional culture fears and loathes. The lords and ladies of the left-hand path will set themselves apart from their fellow man; they will actually or figuratively become outsiders, in order to gain the kind of inner independence necessary for the other initiatory work present in the first criterion.

Martinists, maybe if you look at Emanuel Swedenborg or Jakob Böhme, or Papus, maybe.  But others were Right-Hand.  To make it Left-Hand I think you would have to reinvent it from zero.

The left-hand path is socially relative.  And it has to continually be created anew.
It is the left-hand that people have to be initiated into, as they always start on the right.
pg 8"The left-hand path considers the position of humanity as it is; it takes into account the manifest and deep-seated desire of each human being to be a free, empowered, independent actor within his or her world.  The pleasure and pain made possible by independent existence are seen as something to be embraced and as the most reasonable signs of the highest, most noble destiny possible for humans to attain -- a kind of independent existence on a level usually thought of as divine."

So Flowers talks about "The Witch Craze" and that had a lot to do with Protestantism.

And he talks about the Faustian Path. Then he talks about Lucifer Unbound:

The Florentine Renaissance was about Neoplatonism. In its Renaissance form this was a pagan philosophy gilded with Christian imagery for the sake of the consumption of the masses of of churchmen.

...the most renowned art treasures of the Vatican itself, the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel created by the "divine" Michaelangelo, actually represents Neoplatonic allegory using Biblical scense.

Greatest exponents of Neoplatonism in the Italian Renaissance were Marcilio Finciono and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola

Lords of the Left-Hand Path, by Stephen E. Flowers

    pg 7
The central question now becomes: what is the way in which this conscious, free soul is going to relate to, or seek to interact with, objective universe or the universe as a whole? The right-hand path answers this question simply by saying that the subjective universe much harmonize itself with the laws of the objective universe--be that envisioned as God or Nature. Humanity is to seek knowledge of the law, and then apply itself to submitting to that law in order to gain ultimate union with the objective universe, with God, or with Nature. The right-hand path is the path of union with universal reaqlity (God or Nature). When this union is completed the individual self will be annihilated; the individual will become one with the divine or natural cosmic order.

    continuing:

The left-hand path considers the position of humanity as it is; it takes into account the manifest and deep-seated desire of each human being to be a free, empowered, independent actor within his or her world. The pleasure and pain made possible by independent existence are seen as something to be embraced and as the most reasonable signs of the highest, most noble destiny possible for humans to attain--a kind of independent existence on a level usually thought of as divine.

So Flowers sees this age as being defined by Goethe and Faust.

    pg 178

The true essence of this devil is, of course, the principle of isolate intelligence made aware of this material embodiment. The classical devil is the human spirt exercising its freedom and rationality, its fleshly existence and sense of beauty, its objectivity and sense of humor against the grain of cultural and political Absolutism, which continued to wrap itself in the armor of divinely righteous justification.

Flowers gets into the Romantic Era and then the French Turn of the Century Occultism.

Then Flowers goes to "The Red Devil", meaning about Marxism. He talks about Sade and La Mettrie opening materialism, besides just Marx.

He talks about Mikhail Bakunin ( 1814-1876 ) an anarchist.

And then he is ready to talk about the Bolsheviks.

Talking about the German Left-Hand Path, Odin

page 74, "The system of Plato, as codified by the Neoplatonists (including Kabbalists, Sufis, etc) underlies most current Western systems of initiation and occult training, but because the source has often been intentionally obscured, the essential root are sometimes difficult to discover.

page 66 "... the American pioneer of modern Satanism, Anton LaVey, much admires the work of the sociologist Orrin Klapp and his book Heros, Villains, and Fools, which analyzes the ways in which modern figures are transformed from among these categories in the public perception."

So Flowers talks a great deal about "The Hamitic Left-Hand Path, the Cult of Set". And he has an art work, Union of Set and Horus.

Set seems to have stood for:

    1. opposition to certain natural processes
    2. the outside (desert, foreign lands, etc.)
    3. power or force (physical and magical)
    4. disturbance of the natural order caused by the activity of these factors.

Don Webb is a Setian. Member of Temple of Set

    born 1960

The major Gnostic tenents adhered to by most sects are:

    1. Dualism, namely a dichotimy between spirit (that which is good and created by God) and matter (that which is evil and created and ruled by the Archons)

    2. Absolute transcendence of God; in no way mixed up with the matter of this world.

    3. Gnosis: human "salvation" is to be gained by gnosis, "knowledge" of a supernatural, experiential kind, a direct comprehension of the transcendent absolute: God.

    4. Election: the individual Gnostic is "called" or "elected"

    5. Aions or cycles of existence act as gradual barriers betweeen this world and the realm of transcendent light.

Some of these tenets are shared in some form other schools of thought, such as Neoplatonism or Hermeticism, but it is this combination of tenets what sets Gnostics apart from all others.

When Gnostic thinking is applied to the Judeo-Semetic myth of Genesis, a picture that is the absolute reversal of the conventional understanding emerges. Yahweh is identified as teh demiurge, the Evil One.

The Savior of humanity is the Serpent (Heb Nachash), who is the bringer of light from beyond the cosmos.

Extolling the Serpent, the Ophites, the Naasenes

Rejection of Radical Dualism distinguishes Hermeticism from Gnosticism.
