Circumcision

I was talking to my baby mama cause we got a kid on the way and she brought up curcumcision. I’m circumcised and she wants the baby to be circumcised too. She has friends who didn’t circumcise their kids. Thought it would be interesting to get your guys thoughts on if circumcision is good or bad.

Seems it mostly has to do with cultural norms and/or religious tradition - although apparently it has some anti-STD benefits - in cultures where men are circumcised, being uncircumcised may make the male the odd-looking one, and vise-versa.

I was born in Cuba where circumcision is not the norm - so neither my brother nor I are circumcised - when my brother had kids here in the U.S., AFAIK he was told that a rule-of-thumb was if the father was circumcised, then so should the son, and vise-versa - supposedly it was so the son would not see himself as being different if he saw his father nude - again I don't think there is necessarily a hard-and-fast-rule but IDK for sure - below is a Wikipedia link, if one scrolls down halfway, there is a colored-map which shows the prevalence of circumcision worldwide, circumcision is actually less than half of males worldwide (per the article):

    To answer your questions:

“The developing penis of a child, like his sister's vulva, is self-cleaning and self-defending, as it has been for tens of thousands of years. In evolutionary terms, it could hardly be otherwise...”

“In babies, the foreskin is completely fused to the head of the penis.  You cannot and should not retract it to clean it, as this would cause the child pain,

“The foreskin separates and retracts on its own sometime between age 3 and puberty when boys prepare to procreate...”

“American Doctors ignorance of Male Anatomy and profit practices Harms Little Babies .”

“U.S. medical providers continue to cling to and circulate Victorian myths among themselves. In order to make profit”

“the natural history of the preputial development has been lost, and one must depend on observations made in countries in which circumcision is usually not practiced."

“There are, indeed, excellent foreign resources which describe the correct infant anatomy...”

Please do not allow anyone to harm you son in any way shape or form for any reason; no matter who he is or his position in society or the letters in front of his or her name.

This was our first spousal debate. Wife has religious/cultural reasons favoring circumcision. I have a foreskin.

Oops, anyway, if you had a foreskin, and read of alleged advantages to having it cut off, would you? Let the lad decide for himself.
That square inch will provide so much pleasure in a lifetime.
We broke tradition and left our boys intact.

In my extensive research women who like giving head much prefer giving head to guys who are cut. Case closed.

I myself had no choice in the matter. I’ve been circumcised now for seventy years. I think I would prefer to be uncircumcised. (if i had a choice. )

The majority of women seem prefer cut. I concur. Easily concur.

I'm circumcised. I'm Presbyterian, so I assume it was western European/American norms as opposed to religious reasons.

I've never met a girl who told me they prefer uncut, many ex-girlfriends and wife find it repulsive. To gSteph's point, I hope I haven't missed out on too much extra sensory pleasure. Addressing the STD concerns specifically, researchers discovered a while ago that the HIV virus fit like a lock and key with the type of cells found in the foreskin. Just another advantage to being circumcised.

You can always check with a local rabbi for a cut rate bris - half off! 😜😄

I got circumcised when I was a baby 78 years ago and I had my 50 yo son done when he was a baby. The thinking back then was that it was more hygienic. Now it seems to be controversial.

I'm glad I had it done. When I watch porn and see the guys with uncircumcised dicks, I think they look gross. I'm glad that my own is easier to keep clean and more resistant to std's because I never use condoms.

The Jewish rite of a bris for boys where they get circumcised is a testament to the eternal optimism of the Jewish people, The cut a bit off before they know how big it will be.

Christianity is derived from Judaism thus the term Judeo-Christian which is the form of Christianity practiced in America - i.e. I assume the prevalence of circumcision in the U.S. may be largely derived from the Judeo-Christian heritage of the U.S. which bled into the larger U.S. culture (the Christian believes affected the cultural believes thus those practicing circumcision wasn't necessarily b/c they were religious) - but this is just what I deduce; it may not be entirely correct.

w.r.t. what looks odd or normal - again different cultures have different practices and what is normal for one culture may by alien/odd to another. I've only been with black women and Latinas - some black women have commented about me not being circumcised (as in "you're not circumcised?") - have never had a Latina comment on it - I assume for Americans they are more used to seeing circumcised penises and for them that is the what is "normal" - whereas in other countries it's often the other way around and seeing a circumcised penis is actually odd to those folks.

My understanding is that up to the recent connection of circumcision and STDs, that it wasn't something that was necessarily recommended by doctors. As to whether to be or not to be, IDK - one argument is that if we are born with it it's for a reason.

Hey there. My nipples serve a wonderful purpose.
I know not everyone has them wired the same way, but, just imagine how weird you'd look without them.
    Eyebrows too.

My feeling is if the boy turns 15 or whatever and hates his foreskin he can snip if off then. But I would rather give boys their own choice

I hate the double standard when it comes to this. Male circumcision is defended while female circumcision is considered genital mutilation

Suggest baby boys get their foreskins cut off because women (almost certainly in the USA) supposedly prefer cut men and it's perfectly fine and in fact expected.

Meanwhile I have yet to ever hear that a little girl's labia should be trimmed up because men don't like hanging beef curtains, and anyone who dared to suggest it would be deplatformed, doxxed, their employer hounded until they were fired, and then everyone would applaud when they died homeless under a bridge.

    Compare and contrast.

    A few comments:

Female circumcision has no benefit and is in fact harmful.

Male circumcision has well established hygiene and health benefits (whether by design or more likely by happenstance)

Culturally and psychologically IMO @Papi_Chulo’s advice that as “cut or uncut” the father is, it’s probably best to do the same for the son.

And finally, as they say throughout the Caribbean: “oh that CJKent…he all foreskin”
