I have a fence around my house. Does that mean I am a bad person?

I will admit it was here when I bought the house. It is nice it keeps people out of your yard. And no dog poop inside the fence!

SJG, what is an acceptable percentage of violent criminals that we should allow into America? In your opinion, out of all immigrants, illegally or legally entering the country, what is an acceptable percentage of known violent criminals that should be allowed?
  • TrapBaby304

They don't have any documents so you can't see who if anyone has a criminal background.

I would say that 99% are just people fleeing abject poverty caused by American foreign policy in the region.

Musterd21, these are people who get abused and used as cheap illegal labor by American businesses. They exchange one form of poverty and exploitation for another. The dog poop is the exploitive system not the people.

Founder, this is a free society. People can move about freely. There is already in this some violent criminals, people who are wanted. If they are found, they can be arrested. But just the idea that there could be some number of known violent criminals in migrants is not an adequate reason to build such a wall. The vast majority of people who come across the boarder without documentation do so in motor vehicles.

We have no wall with Canada. Most countries have no such walls.

Most violent crime is committed against people by people they know, not strangers.

Trump originally floated this idea of a wall, just to get elected. It panders to racism.

Now he fights for it, in order to keep his far right base of pundits behind him.

I have lived, worked, and socialized with Mexican's for decades. On the whole they are more gentle and humane than white people are.

Ever watch Natural Born Killers? Stone was saying that that is what Americans are like.

David Stuart, future Dean of UNM, was in Mexico in his early 20's, about 1970, Guaymas.

    https://www.amazon.com/Guaymas-Chronicle…

Mexicans consider Americans to be loners.

Stuart became god father to a baby girl. When she was 18yyo, he was able to arrange for her to attend UNM, Albuquerque. Of the US she questioned, why all the big green lawns in the Sonora Desert? Why do all the cars have just one person in them? Why are all the pedestrians homeless people, don't they have families?

They say that Americans are loners, but really what they mean is that they are psychopaths.

In his memoirs, Vicente Fox explains that if you can make allowances for the Drug Wars caused by US demand, then Mexico, a still not fully industrialized nation, has a homicide rate less than the US.

By all accounts, P4P is far more genteel in Mexico. It certainly is in our local Mexican Bar underground circuit.

Mexican's only turn strange when they have been living in the US, on the margins, for some time. One indicator that a Mexican-American family has disintegrated is when they have become completely fatalistic, i.e. Pentecostal.

For years, they smuggled drugs through tunnels. But as law enforcement learned about these underground channels, they turned to other means: trucks and other vehicles, stuffed with drugs in inconspicuous and creative ways, passing through legal ports of entry into the United States.

The real question, why are people fleeing their homelands because of American foreign policy.

The immigrant fallout of said policy is basically America's actions abroad coming back home to remind the country of what it does and what it is responsible for.

EU member states have clauses in their immigration laws which recognize the fact that the colonialism and imperialism of certain European and Western powers are the reason for these people's plights.

Even if one opposes immigration, there's a point where you have to support human decency. There is nothing humane about a wall and ditches with barbed wire aimed to control the influx of the people most exploited by capitalism in this country.

I'm all for easy, legal immigration. I know of no other country in the world where you can just come in and strart living off the government.

We have so many domestic problems in America. Having more people in this country illegally only exacerbates them. America needs to heal itself first, then it can continue to be a bastion of freedom for the rest of the world.

But wtf do I know. I'm just an old white guy that progressives would rather see dead than speak his mind.

Everytime I hear someone call someone else a mysognist, or a racist, or xenophobic, I tune out. Those words mean NOTHING anymore. Overused by the liberals who don't appreciate how this country was built, and the sacrifices of the generations that came before us.

Nobody gets a free lunch just because you were born. I was raised by an absent single mom, put myself through college, taught myself how to write software, took and continue to take risks with this website all to make my life better.

With the money I make from this site, in addition to paying taxes on it, I donate to charity, sponsor a college scholarship, and help many others financially.

So take your socialist nonsense elsewhere. I'm tired of people expecting the government to take care of them.

Welfare exists to serve the private sector. In exchange for propping up politicians, politicians in turn use welfare to subsidize depressed private sector wages, to keep the slaves at a subsistence level.

Immigrants don't come for handouts, they really just exchange one form of poverty for another. They exchange exploitation by US puppet elites for exploitation by the American private sector. The class of illegal cheap labor is America's modern day slave caste.

Yes, Trump fires people who don't want to work FOR him. That's the breaks. Trump surrounds himself with people who share and support his vision. I don't think that is unusual for the President. The media just reports the chaos so the don't have to do any real journalism.

I don't know what the point of rehashing Obama, is that's gone, for better or worse, and the downturn predated Obama, the beat down started towards the 6th year of Bush 2, point of the matter no matter who's in power, its always small business that pays the bills, and even with the economy in the crapper I did fine, Rich guys like Trump and his cronies, never have a dime in their pocket, and always look for someone else to pick up the tab, and poor folk's just struggling to get ahead, don't really want to hear about our problems, this war has been waged on the middle class forget about the media, they never do get anything right. I became a Reagan Republican when he said the scariest words ever that any one could ever hear were, " I'm from the government and we're here to help" that was the first time I realized that there was a man, there, that actually got it, unfortunately none since him have gotten it.

I sold my tv a while ago and haven't been following the news. I remember Trump promising the American people that he will get Mexico to pay for the border wall.

Will they be paying in pesos or dollars? Have they made their first payment yet? If not, when are they making their first payment?

This Trump guy is amazing. I loved watching the show the Apprentice. I saw a behind the scenes documentary on it and they showed how the tv network had to pay to remodel his offices in Trump Tower, because they were old and run down and wouldn't look impressive on tv.

This Trump guy is a shrewd negotiator. First he gets the tv network to remodel his office and then he gets Mexico to pay for a wall.

I wouldn't be surprised if he can convince Canada to pay for us to return Justin Bieber and Drake.

"What's that smell?" Oh, it's just Trump's rank office.

In the recently released Netflix documentary The Confidence Man, two creators of The Apprentice discuss creating the “character” of Donald Trump as a billionaire business tycoon.

“What we did, that was a scam,” says producer Bill Pruitt. “That was an entertainment.”

Pruitt describes Trump’s real office within New York’s Trump Tower as dated, so the show built the boardroom where Trump uttered the now famous line “You’re Fired!” The famous boardroom was a set based on the classy, high-powered office portrayed in the movie Network.

“If you walked around Trump’s actual office in Trump Tower you’d see the wood’s chipped, and what’s that smell?” says Pruitt in the film. “It wasn’t the empire we were going to have to sell to people. We needed to gussy it up a bit. And we did.”

  • OldGringo

The reality, the film contends, is that by the early 1990s, The Trump Organization was facing over $3 billion of debt and its three Atlantic City casinos went bankrupt; in the following years leading to The Apprentice, Trump “was a man in trouble.”

“We wanted to show people that Donald Trump is not a good businessman when it comes to building a company and managing a company,” Stevens tells PEOPLE, “and I wanted to say how how scary it is that he is running the country because he doesn’t do due diligence on any of his deals.”

Timothy O’Brien, a Trump biographer, says in the film that his 2005 book, TrumpNation: The Art of Being The Donald, claimed that Trump was worth between $150 million to $250 million, far from being a billionaire. (Trump sued O’Brien a decade ago for libel, and lost.)

When banks were hesitant to loan Trump money due to multiple bank defaults and bankruptcies, The Confidence Man tells how Trump made licensing deals that put his name on a wide assortment of properties, giving the impression that he was king of a vast empire. On this premise he created the now-defunct Trump University, which in 2016 settled a $25 million fraud case.
  • OldGringo
It's not about saving money on remodeling. It's that everything about him is a con, a fraud, or a lie. He's a huge bullshitter as 25 said. Everything is a facade. He's not a self made billionaire. He inherited a shitload of money from his Dad and proceeded to go bankrupt multiple times. If the Apprentice didn't resurrect him, he'd be bankrupt now and would never have become president.

Not divisive? The majority of the American people can't stand him and it has nothing to do with Hillary. I don't like Hillary. People don't like him because he's arrogant, a liar, and a fraud. It's not just the American people that can't stand him. He's divisive with the rest of the world too, calling up world leaders and talking shit to them on the phone.

He's unfit to lead. He refuses to take responsibility for his mistakes. He always rewrites history to cover his lies. He's done this with the border wall, taking ownership of the shutdown, and countless other things.

In time, he'll be exposed even more for the fraud that he is.

Anyway, I won't go on anymore. I just can't stand frauds and liars.

That aside, I think you're a good dude Founder and thanks for this website and putting up with everyone who posts here.

@founder I’ll give you a bit of a clue to just how Trump operates, he lives on this,
If you or I owe some money say a million or thereabouts and we can’t pay the money back, we’re the ones in trouble but be sure that if you’re gonna get a loan of a hundred or two hundred million dollars when he defaults the bank is the one in trouble, he’s pulled that dozens of times, his empire is borrowed money, he blew through half a billion dollars that was left to him by dear old dad. That’s his art of the deal.

Also Founder, the economy doing so well and your business flourishing is more a result of quantitative easing and the Fed pumping trillions of dollars of liquidity into the markets over the last ten years than it is about Trump.

Trump just happened to be in the right place at the right time after the trillions of dollars of liquidity finally took full effect. The only thing he should get credit for is the tax cut, which I'm sure has helped many small businesses such as yours and strip clubs. However, quantitative easing is the real reason the economy and consumer confidence has thrived.

The whole build a wall across the entire border idea is nonsense. Are we building a wall through mountain ranges? Most of Texas and some of New Mexico is divided from Mexico by the Rio Grande. Are we going to have a floating wall or just cede all the water rights to Mexico?

Private citizens have paid considerable money purchasing water front property and built gorgeous lake front homes along the border and what, the government is going claim an imminent domain easement and build a wall along the shoreline? Again with no consideration of flood planes or water rights.

The obvious solution is to get away from the vanity project of a big beautiful wall that can have the Trump name attached to it and instead appropriate funds to existing fencing upgrades and more importantly increased border security. Tunnels already exist. Drugs can be passed through slat fence/walls. If the money to be spent on a wall was spent on policing the border instead, it would be a much better deterrent.

And before I am called a liberal, I voted for Trump in the general election, but I sure as hell didn't vote for him in the primary.

No, I do not have homeless people living on my couch. And why should they want to live on my couch anyway?

Radical Leftism means communalism and property re-distribution, as well as government ownership of many critical services. It means starting where Marx and Engels left off and going still further. Times changed, and it is necessary to go beyond what they could have imagined. Lots of thinkers have done this in the last century, and there are lots and lots of new ideas around now.

Marx and Engels after all were just critiquing what resulted from the French Revolution. They found it necessary to go further.

Lots of people in many countries are fighting for leftism beyond what now is being used. I listed some of the books when I talked about the Antfa book.

But basically the US and Western Europe were one the same page up through the mid 60's. Canada's first national health care was patterned after our Medicare.

But then because of Nixon and his Southern Strategy, the US started moving to the right. This continued by playing on racism, and now also by using Christian Nationalism.

Almost two-thirds of people here illegally last year did not cross the border - they overstayed their visa. That's a continuing trend. Border crossings from the south are also way down under Bush and Obama.

Trump promised that Mexico was going to pay for the wall. Instead he's shutting down the government and making innocent government workers go without pay. What a nut case. Outside of TUSCL, Trump's popularity is falling over the shutdown:

So what you're saying, RandomMember, is that 1/3 of the people here illegally crossed the border? I wonder what would happen if I suddenly decided to live in Denmark. I can just set up camp there, right? No need to check in with their government first.

I know border apprehensions are down (a worthless stat, if you ask me).

Did you know that 40% of the kids in LAUSD do not speak English? 40%. I'm not saying they are all here illegally, or undocumented, but I would guess many of them are. And now the teachers are striking for higher pay. Who is going to foot the bill for the teachers' raises? Undocumented Immigration is a problem, and the last 4 presidents have ALL said we need to do something about it. So we finally get someone to do something about it, and now it's not that big of a problem?

Do I think a wall is going to solve this problem? Not completely. But Trump is not only asking for money for a wall. He's asking for money to beef up security at our border crossings. If you don't think we need more border patrol guards, what do you think would help stop the 1/3 of immigrants here illegally.

Trump isn't doing anything about illegal immigration. He's pandering to bigoted right wing populism.

You want to fight illegal immigration????

1- Make the landlords renting to illegals accountable
2- Make the business owners who hire cheap illegal labor instead of American workers accountable...fine them, take their licenses away, etc

Hating on the poor immigrants just wanting a better life isn't the answer. Go against those who exploit them in this country and enable them.
  • founder

Icey, don't we already have laws against hiring illegal aliens?

As for landlords, that would be pretty tough to enforce, and could you imagine not renting to someone cause they can't prove their citizenship? SJWs would go nuts with that.
  • Icey
The laws aren't enforced and the punishment is just a slap on the wrist. That's why the private sector keeps enabling illegal immigration.

Landlords are supposed to do background checks on tenants and credit checks. Impossible for illegals. But again, its just a slap on the wrist if they get caught.

The laws aren't enforced. So where does the fault lie?
  • Icey

The laws favor the rich and the private sector. That's why hiring or renting to illegals, basically making money off of exploiting them and enabling them to stay in the country.....is a slap on the wrist, while the illegal themselves gets deported and replaced with another. There are even businesses that will let ICE raid them just so they can get a new batch of cheap illegal labor on a regular basis.

"Nine hundred teachers just got laid off from the Los Angeles Unified School District. They are $650,000 over their annual budget. The following comments by an English teacher help to explain one area that looms large over California's educational crisis. I hope each person receiving this mail will read it carefully, all the way to the end.

It is sad what is happening to our great country, all because our politicians are afraid they will miss out on a vote. What a travesty!

This English teacher has phrased it the best I've seen yet and it should make everyone think, be you Democrat, Republican or Independent.

    From a California school teacher....
As you listen to the news about the student protests over illegal immigration, there are some things that you should be aware of: I am in charge of the English-as-a-second-language department at a large southern California high school which is designated a Title-1 school, meaning that its students average in the lower socio-economic and income levels.

Most of the schools you are hearing about are Compton, South Gate High, Bell Gardens, Huntington Park, etc., where their students are protesting – these are also Title-1 schools.

Title-1 schools are on the free-breakfast and free-lunch program. When I say free breakfast, I'm not talking about a glass of milk and a roll. But a full breakfast and cereal bar with fruits and juices that would make the Marriott proud.

The waste of this food is monumental, with trays and trays of it being dumped in the trash uneaten. (Our tax dollars at work!)

I estimate that well over 50% of these students are obese or at least moderately overweight. About 75% or more have cell phones.

The school also provides day care centers for the unwed teenage pregnant girls (some as young as 13) so they can attend class without the inconvenience of having to arrange for babysitters or having family watch their kids (More of our tax dollars at work!)

I was ordered to spend $700,000 on my department, or risk losing funding for the upcoming year even though there was little need for anything.

My budget was already substantial, but I ended up buying new computers for the Computer Learning Center, half of which, one month later, were carved with graffiti by the appreciative students who obviously feel humbled and grateful to have a free education in America. (More and more of our tax dollars at work!)

I have had to intervene several times for young substitute teachers whose classes consist of many illegal immigrant students here in the country less than 3 months, who raised so much hell with the female teachers, calling them putas (whores) and throwing things,
that the teachers were in tears.

Free medical care, free education, free food, free day care, etc., etc., etc. Is it any wonder they feel entitled not only to be in this country, but also to demand rights, privileges and entitlements?

To those who want to point out how much these illegal immigrants contribute to our society, because they happen to like their gardener and/or housekeeper, and they like to pay less for tomatoes, I say:
Spend some time in the real world of illegal immigration and see the true costs. Higher insurance, medical facilities closing, higher medical costs, more crime, lower standards of education in our schools, overcrowding, new diseases, etc., etc., etc. For me, I'll pay more for tomatoes.

Americans, we need to wake up. The guest worker program will be a disaster because we won't have the guts to enforce it. Does anyone in their right mind really think they will voluntarily leave and return?

It does, however, have everything to do with culture: A third-world culture that does not value education, that accepts children getting pregnant and dropping out of school by age 15, and that refuses to assimilate, plus an American culture that has become so weak and worried about "political correctness", that we don't have the will to do what is needed.

If this makes your blood boil, as it did mine, forward this to everyone you know including your Congressman and Senators.

Cheap labor? Isn't that what the whole immigration issue is about? Business doesn't want to pay a decent wage. Consumers don't want expensive produce. Government will tell you "Americans don't want the jobs".

But the bottom line is cheap labor. The phrase "cheap labor" is a myth, a farce, and a lie. There is no such thing as "cheap labor".

Take, for example, an illegal alien with a wife and five children. He takes a job for $5.00 or $6.00/hour. At that wage, with six dependents, he pays no income tax, yet at the end of the year, if he files an income tax return, he gets an "earned income credit"
    of up to $3,200 free.

    Also....
    1- He qualifies for Section-8 housing and subsidized rent;

    2- He qualifies for food stamps;

    3- He qualifies for free (no deductible, no co-pay) health care;

    4- His children get free breakfasts and lunches at school;

    5- He requires bilingual teachers and books;

    6- He qualifies for relief from high energy bills;

    7- If they are, or become aged, blind or disabled, they qualify for SSI;

    8- Once qualified for SSI they can qualify for Medicare (All of this at taxpayer's {our} expense);

    9- He doesn't worry about car insurance, life insurance, or homeowner’s insurance;

    10- Taxpayers provide Spanish language signs, bulletins and printed material;

    11- He and his family receive the equivalent of $20.00 to $30.00/hour in benefits;

    12- Working Americans are lucky to have $5.00 or $6.00/hour left after paying their bills and his;

13- The American taxpayers also pays for increased crime, graffiti and trash clean-up.

14- Free Child Care (i.e., free babysitting from 6 AM – 6 PM

15- Free ‘mommy makeovers’ after having their children ( includes: tummy tuck and breast lift)

Cheap labor? Yeah right! Wake up people!

These are the questions we should be addressing to the Presidential candidates for either party. We must take action or we will all go down the drain because a few don't care.

And if you think this is bad, just wait until a Democrat becomes President and the redistribution of wealth becomes the norm in this ex-Democracy. The estimated annual cost now, for state, local and federal, is nearly $400 billion dollars a year.

Terrific argument for getting on top of our immigration system not for a wall nor for shutting down the government, there’s no name attached to this letter which makes it suspicious in my opinion, still I believe we can get immigration under control without all of the bullshit, that’s going on right now.

if you think its that easy to apply for these benefits, you should head down to your local welfare office and try. just tell them youre illegal and no habla ingles. Also, you need a social sercurity number to get the child credit when you file your taxes.

I say build the wall, its only a drop in the bucket in the over all national debt. End this clown show. Think about it 800,000 Americans are being held hostage by democrats and republicans. the majority of guys here will pay a stripper what shes owed even if she gives you a lame ass air dance. so basically PL can claim high moral ground compared to the politicians that are running this country.

@Founder, no one really wants to fix illegal immigration.

The countries most come from are US puppet states and letting people in abject poverty is like a safety valve for them that prevents popular uprisings from really taking root.

In the US, a lot of industries benefit from cheap illegal labor, like a modern day slave class.

In the end, Americans and illegals get screwed over. Americans lose jobs, wages get depressed, etc. And the illegals just become exploited in a new environment.... and its worse for them here than at home. At least at home they're still members of society, can communicate and have the potential to change shit. Here, they don't, they're invisible in the system.

Generally refugees and those coming from pre-industrial countries will just cross borders and set up camp. Not much different from how it was where ever they are coming from. Some people in Mexico live in places without running water, electricity, street lights, or pavement. They are just trying to stay alive.

But there is no law in the US mandating English. We are a multi-cultural, multi-racial, and multi-lingual nation.

The United States is also not a private enclave belonging to White People, or to Citizens. We are part of a community of nations and we have humanitarian responsibilities. And so for one thing, I applaud Pope Francis, he wanted to start his trip here by walking from Central America, through Mexico, and then crossing at an unofficial place into Texas. He wanted to show these migrants that he stands with them.

Working in our schools is a challenge, and our teachers are underpaid and the schools are underfunded and understaffed. But there is no "crisis in education."

US Immigration Laws have always been rooted in racism. No different today.

Scandinavia and much of Western Europe are far to the Left of the US, and to the left of anything Bernie Sanders has ever said.

That is about as far as any nation has gotten, and always working because of a strong tradition of electoral democracy. Not like Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Cuba, China, or Russia.

The US was on track with Europe in moving to the left, up through the mid 1960's. Then with Nixon and his 1968 Southern Strategy, the US turned and started moving to the Right.

But there are Autonomous Marxism and Libertarian Marxism movements throughout Europe, and some in South America, as well as worker owned factories and communes.

Here, discussion of Mark Bray's book, which gets into recent discussions of Autonomous Marxism, which had started in Italy.

They have about 15% higher top tax brackets, as well as a social safety net. So too does Ontario now.

But true, they do not have state ownership of many resources.

But even the above is far to the left of anything Bernie Sanders has talked about.

Ownership of Volvo, and of Fiat, has shifted back and forth between public and private. Some of the European airlines and aviation industry I believe are at least largely publicly owned.

The US had 90% top income tax during the Eisenhower years. Then JFK lowered it to 70%, and it stayed like that up through Ford.

70% is the number Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is now calling for. So she is a good deal further to the Left of anything Bernie Sanders said during the 2016 Campaign.

Robert Reich talks much about this too.

    And also very good:

You can't even get 500 Congresseople too agree on policy here, let alone convince 330,000,000 Hispanic-African -Asian-European- Latin -Americans to pony up 90% in taxes.

@founder the more I think about the conclusion I’m coming up with is Trump doesn’t give a flying fuck about a wall, he had two years where he had both the congress and the senate to pretty much rubber stamp pretty much anything he wanted, what he really wanted is a fight with the Democrats because he knows the only way he gets re-elected in 2020 is to keep the anger and hostility simmering at a slow boil. Something I don’t think is understood generally is that folks that are riled up are more likely to believe propaganda and fake news stories of the type that the Russians have been distributing among others with political interests, they don’t need to actually hack the voting machines to influence the vote, that’s the real key to what is actually going on in this country.
I personally believe the wall is a distraction and likely to become just another boondoggle like the bridge to nowhere in Alaska several years back.

Some gov't functions, Trump has the legal authority to shut down. But others no. It is a matter of law that they be funded and that their people be paid. Trump is not above federal law, budget or not.

"European countries with only one culture can pull off moderate socialism."

European countries have immigration and minorities. And they have a moderate degree of socialism. But compared to the US since 1980, they are very far to the left.

"You can't even get 500 Congresseople too agree on policy here, let alone convince 330,000,000 Hispanic-African -Asian-European- Latin -Americans to pony up 90% in taxes."

Well, the US Right is funded, promoted, and powered by all sorts of things. Two of the biggest are racism and evangelical religion.

As it stands now, no one is envisioning any taxation beyond 70%.

If you did get lots of state owned resources, then that would eventually alleviate the need for much taxation. Surplus value would go to the state first, for expanding the mid-sector of the economy, rather than to the bourgeoisie.

"Why don't Americans Socialists realize it would be easier to move to Europe than try to turn America socialist? Probably because European countries have immigration policies. And that, my friends, is why Trump is right about a crisis on our border."

Well, in the Declaration of Independence Jefferson was breaking with Locke and his focus on property, by talking about the pursuit of happiness. The Declaration championed an empowered populace, constituted popular sovereignty. The Constitution on the other hand is about protecting property rights from that popular sovereignty.

The US and Europe were in sync, moving steadily to the Left, up through the mid-60's. Then it was Nixon and his Southern Strategy, and then Reagan.

Moving the US to the Left is simply about letting people here have a chance at education and at an economic future, while still protecting our environment.

The Red State doctrines and talk about Financial Literacy and promoting Entrepreneurship as a public policy only accelerate the move towards becoming a 3rd world country. It is all fatalism.

The US has always been a multi-racial and multi-cultural political political project. And when this shows, we see America at its best. We have the early move away from theocracy, and to separation of church and state. And we have the opening up of voter qualifications in the early 1800's.

Then we have the Abolitionist Movement and the end of Slavery, and the 14th Amendment.

Then we have the early Women's Movement, and the efforts to end colonialism world wide after WW1, and at least starting, but not joining, the League of Nations.

And then during the Great Depression ideas really changed. We have Upton Sinclair running to be CA Governor, 1934, Production for Use, far to the Left of the New Deal.

We have the growth of the trade union movement. And then we have re-armament and preparation to take down Germany and Japan.

We have outstanding service in WWII. Then we have Harry Truman signing an order to integrate the armed services.

Then we have racial civil rights pressures growing and resulting in the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

But then there is back sliding with Nixon and the Republicans using that to take over the South.

And then more backsliding with the rise of the Evangelical Christian Movement, a repackaging of the South's Pro-Slavery and Pro-Segregation religion.

And we have lost much with Reagan, starting with breaking the trade union movement by breaking PATCO. And then with gutting progressive income tax ( 70% tops ), and now an ever increasing wealth gap, college out of reach for many, and an increasing large portion of the population with nothing but shit jobs to look forward to. But they get all kinds of stuff preached at them.

Universal health care delayed. Used to be South Africa which did not have universal care. Now it is only the US among industrialized nations, which still does not have it.

And really a politics which runs by denigrating poor people. Blaming the problems with capitalism on those who have been most negatively effected.

Trump and his wall are just an excuse to dismantle the society at home.

^ If AOC sticks around for a few terms she might get a little smarter, the way things are right now she really knows very little, what she has going for her is her attractiveness, she is clever and quick thinking, but that won’t work long term.
Trump would do well to remember that Mrs Pelosi is no newcomer and has a real sense of how to use the power that she has, her experience is a good indicator of what to expect from her, if Trump is really playing four dimensional chess (which I doubt) he’d be smart to study how Bill Clinton came to an accommodation with Newt Gingrich during the Clinton administration or he’s dead in the water.

AOC is not a tool of anyone, she's a very smart young woman from Puerto Rico, she fought to keep her mother's house from being taken away by the banks, and then she made a very good showing campaigning for Bernie Sanders. So now she has been voted into the US House. She is one of the brightest lights of the 2018 election.

The Kennedy Eisenhower years were the years of greatest economic grown and greatest advancement for the working man. 1969 to 1972 were the years of the greatest inflation adjusted purchasing power for the working man.

Then, environmental limits started to be reached, and especially in the consumption of crude oil. Opec formed, cutting off super cheap oil, and other countries were building modern industry.

Kennedy lowered the top tax rate from 90% down to 70%. It stayed like that until Reagan.

Do you know what the government does with the tax money it collects?

    It spends it!

This is what keeps the middle sector of the economy going. Without that the US would go like most other societies have, dividing into the very rich and the very poor.

Even Richard Nixon said, "I am a Keynesian."

The size of the economy is not production limited, not entrepreneur limited, not investment capital limited. It is purchasing power limited.

The one who first figured all of this out was John Maynard Keynes. He recognized that way you expand the economy, and keep it expanded, is through progressive taxation, and then by spending it.

Tax money gets spent in direct employment, procurement and contracting, and in benefit programs. The further down in the economic hierarchy the money goes, the more times it recirculates.

Remember Dan Quayle, running around the Senate floor telling his colleagues how to put their money into the Isle of Man? Well eventually the money ends up like that, dead money, inflating the stock and real estate markets. There is no shortage of investment money. Yanis Varoufakis counted it at $5.2 Trillion. But with the Trump Bubble on Wall Street, it has got to be more than double that by now. But that money is in stocks and real estate simply because people have no place better to put it. There is just not the consumptive demand to create much growth. Entrepreneurship does not create jobs, it eats jobs.

Reagan supported the rise of Saddam Hussein. Donald Rumsfeld was there in his office when he was ordering helicopter poison gas attacks on the Kurds. The last OPEC meeting ended early as delegates came scrambling home because Iraq had attacked Iran. So oil prices plummeted, the Texas oil industry cratered, and the big cars came back.

Things like cuts to taxes and worker and environmental protections can give temporary boosts, but not sustained increases. The ability to consume has not increased. After the 1986 crash, people were saying that the DOW might never exceed 4000 again.

So since, it has been one Ponzi scheme after another, one boom, one bust. Always the general economic condition and the wealth gap getting worse and worse.

Bill Clinton did put in an extra 2% high income tax, and that with some military cuts showed the financial sector that we were not racing any more to run the train off the cliff. That means that company valuations can be looked at more long term. And so there was a boom. But the changes were still too small, and a liability was built in via the subprime lending practices.

The 2% was passed with a time limit and G. W. Bush did not want to extend it.

Hillary Clinton though did want to reinstate it, and it probably would have had the same effect. But we need more of a change than that.

Probably 55% to 60% top tax bracket would be enough. Especially if it could be the top of two new brackets, the lower of the two coming in at a lower income level.

No one, except for maybe an aboriginal, is economically independent. All of us are part of a very complex web of economic and legal inter-dependencies.

Today, this far into industrialization and an information economy, very little labor is needed to meet hard needs. So probably, just using Keynesianism alone to expand the middle sector, is probably no longer enough. We need instead to plan on having increasingly large segments of the labor force retired, and often without any private money behind them. We need to plan on a welfare state. And the best way to do this is Universal Basic Income (UBI). What makes this different is that it is not needs tested, everyone gets it. This way the poor are not being pilloried. Taxes are means tested, but UBI has no such test.

As it is now, our politics runs by pillorying the poor. This destroys our democracy and our society. So UBI, and with it cost controlled and public offerings to meet all basic needs, like housing, food, transportation, clothing, health care, child care, and education. We don't want to be fattening slum lords or driving up housing costs with public monies.

As far as Trump and that wall, who knows what Trump might do. But there is no emergency arising from not having that wall. And that wall is for political purposes. And probably, Trump has learned that the wall helps him more not being built, than built.

Richard Nixon had his 1969 Family Assistance Plan (federalizing some welfare costs), but soon he learned that the plan had more political value not passed. So he let his own legislation flounder and die, opening the door to Reagan and his Welfare Queen stories.

Same for Trump and the wall.

Newt Gingrich was hurt badly by his government shutdown. Though there will no doubt be disagreements about making a budget, I think Trump knows not to shut it down again.

I think you mean elementary school and high school, not colleges. I interpreted Meat as talking about public assistance programs.

Letting kids go to school is a basic human rights issue. The consequences of not doing that far and above outweigh the costs.

CA would stop functioning without immigrants from Mexico and further south. They do the jobs that no one else wants. They are the ones who can live on unlivable wages. They add radically more to our economy than what they might take from public coffers.

  • san_jose_guy

Well it does not offer social safety net programs to the undocumented. Maybe to non-citizen legal residents. Not sure

Overall, all immigrants from Mexico and Latin America contribute far more than they take. Remember, they live here, so they are consumers. They keep our economy going, while actually getting very little. One the whole much nicer people than most whites, in my opinion.

It is still true that most of the political impetus for cracking down in immigration is driven by racism. Southern California, and especially places like Riverside, Orange County, and San Diego are far more like this than San Jose. We had a huge protest march against AZ's Joe Arpaio.

Trump and his side have manufactured the perception of a border crises, where there is actually none. They did this because they saw that this appealed to some segment of the voters, and so it helped get Trump elected. Also, as Nikki Haley described, he was the "loudest voice in the room", that is he was saying the most extreme things in order to draw attention. Many critics feel that he never expected or wanted to get elelcted, that he just wanted to be able to negotitate a higher salary for his television program, "The Apprentice".

FAIR researchers note the increasing costs of illegal immigration is a “disturbing and unsustainable trend.” Costs to taxpayers have risen by nearly $3 billion since 2013, when illegal aliens’ total cost to taxpayers was $113 billion, according to FAIR.

But people are always trying to find ways to gain collective activism and form communities.

Refugee camps, homeless camps, environmental protest encampments, all part of it.

When will it go to large scale violence?

Well before it started with the Underground Railroad, and then John Brown.

It could come in standing up to the White Supremacists and something like that Unite The Right in VA.

In past times there has been unfocused violence in the form of riots.

There have been rent strikes in the US in times past, and people opposing Sheriff's evictions and Farm Auctions.

Suppose a Mexican got himself a grappling hook. Say he got himself over Trump's wall. Then say he walked into a bank and got himself hired as Bank President, and at an annual salary of $1 Meg.

Would that shut you guys up?

Is the real issue just that these are poor people, and so that makes it okay for you to denigrate them?

Well having a job and a salary does not make one more worthy of basic human dignity.

Suppose it was one of you two, @Meat72 or @ime, that got the million dollar a year Bank President job. That would not make you better than other people, or more worthy of human dignity.

And as far as taxes, when you accept a job, it is understood that you will never receive the Gross Pay, you will receive only the Net Pay. So that which goes to taxes never was yours and you never had any claim on it. It should be with held anyway, and proceeds of securities transactions should be accessed and the correct amount going to estimated taxes. So you do not really "pay taxes", rather, you engage in activities which gain you revenue, knowing full well that some of the money will go to taxes. But that money then never was yours at all. Those who have income, pay income tax, and it should be much more progressive, like it used to be. Those who do not have income, do not pay income tax.

And then if you get the Bank President job, you are most likely displacing someone else, someone who wanted that job, someone who had that job, or someone who worked for another bank which is going out of business. But our society has to work for everyone, not just those who come out ahead.

And then of Mexico, people come here because they want to work, and then they want their kids to go to school. Expecting this is very reasonable. Our country is greatly improved by immigrants, legal or not. And it is to the benefit of us all to educate their kids and to provide everyone with health care.

There is no border or immigration crisis.

And of course I am not going to listen to Trump's SOTU address, but I will be most interested to hear what Stacey Abrams has to say in reply.

25 - Well the poor aren't paying taxes now anyway and actually get money when they do their tax returns. But it is not the rich's duty to subsidize the poor based on some arbitrary income number picked out of the sky, at least not at the hand of the government if they have proven anything is they will waste the money. This issue Meat72 is right here in this country. Here is where the talents of good people are being wasted and their efforts thwarted. You can't make a society work by Cops, Courts, and Corrections. It has to work for everyone, and there have to be ways for people to use their talents. Not everyone wants to be a worthless parasite like Meat72.

The rewards of industrialization are that everyone can have a high standard of living. As Buckminster Fuller said, we lose that because we demand that everyone prove that they can earn a living. So our society runs on schemers and scammers, and parasites like Meat72.

^^^ You’re the parasite who wants to pretend to advocate for the poor, yet all you want is their vote so it can further your left wing nut job agenda, which only further takes from the working class and distributes it to the leeches of society which you SJG, propagate for your evil and sick fascist ways.

Meat72, it is you who are the psychopath, and stay away from any women of mine.

We live in an advanced industrialized society, so the number of jobs available continues to decline each year. As it is now, most paid employment is not worth the resources it consumes.

We have the ability to let everyone live better than kings had lived in centuries past. All we have to do is just recognize the situation.

You on the otherhand pedal greed, fear, and stupidity.

In case you didn’t understand what I was telling you, Lloyd Schoene got divorced due to his distaste’s for women and a preference for young and slim Mexican boys. That’s how he got divorced!!

Agree with @Gringo about focusing on increased technology. Also makes sense to focus on foreigners overstaying their visa since that's actually a bigger problem by a factor of two. I don't know what the solution is, but perhaps a federal mandate for E-verify.

There is no border, immigration or security crisis. Conflating immigration and security is part of the Bush 43 insanity which took over in the wake of the 9-11 incident. There are though on going matters of contention about immigration. We have to work with Mexico to navigate these.

SJG, you do know the wall will NOT stretch the entire length of the border, right? We're talking about 300 or so miles.
  • san_jose_guy
Well, there is already the G. W. Bush super heavy duty fence. I don't think people get past that. It allows air, water, and small animals to get through it.

We have no wall with Canada, and other countries have no such walls.

East Germany had a wall, but that was to keep their people in.

Isn't that what Trump's wall would really be for, just to raise antagonisms and to scapegoat another country's people, and to make Americans feel that Mexico is unsafe and alien? Aren't Trump and his base just afraid that Americans are going to come to see Mexico as their second home. It is going to be like that for me. And then Mexican-Americans are already people whom I associate with daily.

And responding to Trump and American becoming socialist, up through the mid 60's we were in sync with Western Europe in moving towards Social Democracy. And then it was free and low cost land which launched and sustained a middle-class. And then after that was no more, it was FDR and progressive taxation and spending which sustained the mid-sector of the economy and re-launched a middle-class. So America has often been in the lead in moving towards socialism. The French Revolution was in large measure inspired by the American Revolution, and so too with the Russian Revolution.

    ^^^^^^^ Very interesting.

Also sounds like where the budgeted 55 mile section is to be, there is also some small church right in the way.

Building walls takes a long time. If there really were any kind of an emergency, it would have to be dealt with by some other means.

Caravans of political and economic refugees really pose a national security threat and require multi-billion dollar walls, and for the most powerful nation on earth?

“The wall might or might not be built. But even if it remains only in its phantasmagorical, budgetary stage, a perpetual negotiating chip between Congress and the White House, the promise of a two-thousand-mile-long, thirty-foot-high ribbon of concrete and steel running along the United States’ southern border serves its purpose. It’s America’s new myth, a monument to the final closing of frontier. It’s a symbol of a nation that used to believe that it had escaped history, or at least strode atop history, but now finds itself trapped by history, and of a people who used to think they were captains of the future, but now are prisoners of the past.”

The fire hose of fake news from the establishment media this week on the issue of illegal immigrant families separated at the border is designed to mislead the American people — and to distract from Trump’s recent successes.
Here are the facts — 13 truths the media do not want you to know about President Trump’s legal, humane, and moral handling of adults and children who enter our country illegally.

Trump Is Only Enforcing the Law
The establishment media’s manufactured narrative about the necessary and moral separation of illegal alien parents from their children is designed with the specific purpose of spreading the fake news that, only as a means to be cruel, President Trump is somehow making all of this up as he goes along.

In truth, Trump is only complying with and enforcing the law, which is his constitutional duty and responsibility.

When the media claim Trump has a “choice,” what they mean is he has a choice to ignore the law as Obama did when he illegally released untold numbers of illegals into America.

Trump’s “zero tolerance policy” is merely his administration treating all lawbreakers as lawbreakers, because the only other option is to let them loose into America with nothing but a court summons.

Trump’s Only Choice Is to Separate Illegal Alien Families
When an illegal alien crosses the border into the U.S., he is a lawbreaker, and, like any lawbreaker (including American citizens), he is put into the criminal justice system.

    This is the law.

Obviously, when an illegal alien is in custody, he is housed in an adult detention center. For obvious reasons, it would be illegal for Trump to “reunite” this family by allowing children to live in adult detention centers.

Keep in mind that when we are this early in the process, we do not even know if this is a real family unit. It is not uncommon for illegal aliens (including criminals) to pretend the children they are traveling with are their own. They do so in the hope this special family status will result in them being released (this madness is known as “catch and release”) into America with nothing more than a court date — a date many never show for, most especially those with criminal intent.

And so, while the illegal adult is held in an adult detention center, the migrant child is cared for in shelters run by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Generally, the adult illegal is processed quickly, sentenced to time served, and the family is quickly reunited during the deportation process.

In other words, in order to keep the family unit together, we can either put children in adult detention centers (unthinkable), put adults in child detention centers (unthinkable), or hold no one, which means “catch and release,” which means letting even more illegal immigrants loose to live in our country illegally.

The only moral and legal option here is to temporarily separate families while the criminal justice system runs its course.

The Left Wants Illegal Aliens to Enjoy Privileges Denied to American Citizens
If an American citizen breaks the law and is funneled into the justice system, he is separated from his family and children. This American citizen is not allowed to keep his family with him in a detention center.

Once again, our media want illegal aliens to enjoy special rights and privileges American citizens do not enjoy.

    One more point…

These migrants are guilty of walking minor children through miles and miles of desert with the intent of committing a crime (crossing a border illegally).

If you or I walked a child through miles and miles of desert with the intent of committing a crime, child protective services would take our children away (and should).

Asylum Seekers Not Breaking the Law are Not Being Separated
If you cross the border illegally and claim asylum, you are still a lawbreaker. Regardless of your intent, crossing the border illegally automatically puts you in the criminal justice system, where you will obviously be separated from family.

These asylum seekers are choosing to break the law, are choosing to be separated from family.

Asylum seekers who respect our laws, by turning themselves in at legal points of entry, are not being separated. Over-crowding due to the abuse of this policy might eventually make this impossible, but it is up to Congress to allocate more funds.

Trump Is Correct About the Loophole
In 1997, a consent decree called the Flores Settlement made it illegal for America to hold migrant children for longer than 20 days. Meaning, in order to keep the family together after 20 days of detention, we can either reunite the family by letting them loose to live illegally in America, or we can keep the parent in detention and place the child in a foster home or with a relative who lives in America.

Trump is wisely choosing to do the latter (for a number of moral reasons I will explain later).

A case involving an illegal border crosser not seeking asylum is usually adjudicated before the 20 days are up, which means the family unit is reunited during deportation and no foster care is needed. This, obviously, is the best case scenario.

Those who cross the border illegally and then claim asylum status (an important distinction from asylum seekers who obey the law) are another story, because the asylum process almost always exceeds the 20 days, and this is the law the Trump administration wants changed.

By speeding up the asylum process, the family unit can be reunited faster, either in the deportation process (if asylum is not granted — and this process is frequently abused) or in the resettlement process (if asylum is granted).

Another option is to end the 20-day limit so foster care does not become necessary. Parent and child can remain in the detention centers until the asylum process is settled.

“Reuniting” Families Would Be a Disaster for Countless Children
Again, the only way to “keep a family together” is to allow illegals to pour into our country.

This policy would be a total disaster, especially for the children.

If word gets out that America automatically allows illegal border crossers with small children loose into America just because they have minor children, this would only further incentivize those who engage in the child abuse of dragging children along on the unbelievably dangerous trek across the border — or, even worse, both exploiting them for catch-and-release and then trafficking them after making it into the country.

No one who truly cares about these children wants to further incentivize that kind of abuse.

Obama and Democrats Incentivized This ‘Family Separation’
Until Obama came along, illegal border crossings primarily involved young, single men. Obama incentivized the idea of dragging minor children along on this dangerous journey (where many children are sexually assaulted) through his policy of “catch and release.”

Once word got out that illegals with small children would be let loose into America, the number of children crossing the border exploded.

Again, the last thing decent people want is for the American government to further incentivize the cruel act of bringing small children along on this brutal trip across the border, which is exactly what Trump is hoping to stop with his zero tolerance policy.

Barack Obama Separated Illegal Alien Families, Media Said Nothing
Under Obama, when illegal border crossers were put into the criminal justice system, families were indeed separated. Obama, of course, rarely prosecuted, even though the law calls for it.

Neither Democrats nor the media cared about family separation then, which proves this manufactured and coordinated uproar is only about politics.

The only reason the media suddenly came to care about family separation is as a means to fabricate a controversy, as a tactic to distract voters from three legitimate news stories from last week that benefit Trump: 1) our economy is booming, 2) Trump had a successful summit with North Korea, and 3) the Inspector General report exposed James Comey’s FBI as a swamp of corruption out to exonerate Hillary Clinton and frame Trump.

IMPORTANT: The ONLY Way to Unite Families Is to Release Them into America
Obviously, we cannot have children living in adult detention centers. Obviously, we cannot have adults living in child detention centers. Therefore, the only way to “reunite” these families is to release these illegals into our country.

The media will not tell you this because the media do not want you to know that flooding America with non-citizens is their true agenda. The rich and powerful love to exploit and abuse these individuals, as they can leverage their immigration status for illegally low wages, and politicians are salivating at the chance to bestow voting rights on them — and thus entrench their power.

But when you hear the media call for these families to be reunited, remember that is coded language that means only one thing: releasing illegal aliens into our country with nothing more than a court summons.

Incentivizing the Act of Bringing Minor Children Across the Border Is Evil
The media do not want to inform Americans of one crucial fact: the dangers inherent in crossing the border from Mexico into America, most especially the dangers faced by minor children. Sadly, these dangers too often involve sexual abuse.

Decent people who truly care about these children, like President Trump, want to do everything in their power to end this abuse — either by building a wall, or through this zero tolerance policy that will hopefully curb this abusive practice.

Evil people want these children dragged across the border, want this abuse incentivized by “keeping the family unit together,” because flooding the country with future indebted voters is more important to them than the safety and well-being of small children.

Those Who Come to America Legally Face ‘Family Separation’
Many people who come to America legally from other countries are separated from family. A big part of America’s LEGAL immigration policy involves family separation when one or two family members come over before the rest are legally or financially able.

And so, once again, we have the media and Democrats demanding special treatment for illegal immigrants that legal immigrants do not enjoy. Once again we are incentivizing lawbreaking and treating the line-jumpers better than those who follow the rules.

“Family Reunification” Is an Invitation to Human Traffickers
Because of “catch and release,” because of this dumb and destructive loophole carved out for families, the number of illegal aliens using children to enter the U.S. increased by 315 percent between October 2017 and February 2018.

Trump understands what is happening and this is why he has moved to a zero tolerance policy.

Anything other than zero tolerance only serves as an incentive for human traffickers and other criminals to use these children as their free pass into America.

Incentivizing such a thing is monstrous:

Media Do Not Give a Shit About American Families Separated by Criminal Illegal Aliens
Illegal alien families are choosing to be separated by voluntarily engaging in lawbreaking. These illegal alien families, if they so choose, can stay together, simply by obeying the law.

    This is not hard.

Those who do not have a choice in family separation are the legions of American families permanently separated from family members when that family member is killed at the hands of an illegal alien.

As Steve Bannon accurately pointed out over the weekend, “I don’t see the mainstream media and the liberal left embracing the Angel Moms, those people who were permanently separated from their children because of illegal aliens who came over here and committed crimes and killed people. You’re being very selective.”

If one is enforcing the law, then the detained suspects have a right to a speedy trial.

By our US law, you cannot use indefinite sentence.

And minor children are not going to be suspects, only adults. So you have to take good care of the children and keep good records.

And you have to obey TX motor vehicle codes when transporting them. Everything the Trump admin has done here is illegal.

Much of the impetus for this came from Jeff Sessions. Both he and his boss are fully culpable, and there is no exception in International Law for a head of state.

There is no such thiung as International law. The whole idea is fucking idiotic. No one on earth has a right to come here and if the people cheating, lying and stealing from the taxpayer were right wing whites from Easter Europe the sick demented people called progressives would be out planting land mines on the border. Amid reports of inhumane and degrading conditions at child immigration jails along the southern border, we speak with Satsuki Ina, a Japanese-American psychotherapist who was born in the Tule Lake Segregation Center, a maximum-security internment camp for Japanese Americans during WWII. “After decades of living our lives as compliant and quiet, and demonstrating and proving ourselves as good citizens, many of us have felt that it’s time for us to speak out, to protest, to resist, and to speak out in ways that we haven’t in the past, because we know what these children are experiencing,” Ina said. “We know what it’s like to have family separation, to suffer the long-term consequences of the trauma of being incarcerated—for some of us, more than four or five years.”

It's really simple....don't want to end up in one of these camps.....don't cross the border illegally.

I love how you guys just put this on Trump as if it hasn't been happening for several administrations. The first pictures the set off the firestorm were actually taken from the time that Obama was in office. Where was the outcry then?

You want to blame Trump for the issues on the border.....who was it that only wanted to give 5 billion to the issue when 25 billion had been offered before. We need to build a wall (technological or physical) to help control who crosses into the country precisely because you don't know their records. The left wants to ban guns because every once in awhile one out of the millions of privately owned guns gets into the wrong hands and someone dies. Well, how much higher of a percentage chance is there that an illegal immigrant will commit a violent crime against a citizen? What's the line....if it will save just one life...?

  • san_jose_guy
Yes, large numbers of migrants are always a problem, and they have been so since before Trump.

But it was Trump and Jeff Sessions who decided to handle it in this idotic manner.

It is illegal, and I want to see those guys prosecuted in the International Court, as that has no exemption for sitting head of state in a Crimes Against Humanities Trial.

Suspected Criminals have a right to a Speedy Trial. I think it is 60 days. Our laws do not allow indefinite detention.

And suspects have to arraigned before a judge, like within 4 days or a week. They get to enter a plea, and the judge can decide if there is some legitimacy in the charge and to holding the party for trail.

No federal judge is going to sign off on minor children being suspected criminals for an illegal border crossing.

The reason we have not arrested border crossers before is because that means keeping another country's people in US jails. We keep enough of our own people behind bars as it is now. It is expensive.

So we just send them back. What happens then?

Well it is always a problem. Many will try to cross again. With many, they are not even from Mexico, hard to tell.

So we need some experts here and we need some leadership.

We have laws about federal foster care standards, and we have no legal justification for not adhering to those in the care of these migrant children.

    https://nypost.com/2019/06/27/de-blasio-…

"despite legal standards that require children who cross the border to be speedily released or sent to state-licensed shelters that are equipped to offer longer-term care."

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/26/us/ho…

A wall does not keep people out, not if they are really determined to get in. A wall might help if you do not have enough guards. But that border is so long, and the Rio Grande Valley is so rugged, that it will only be the highly determined who will try it anyway.

If someone has left whatever they had, to walk the distance from Central America to the US, then they must be highly determined. A 30ft wall will not have much effect.

The reason that this is being made into such an issue now is simply the reason immigration has always been made into an issue, RACISM!

Once court dismisses case against minors, the only justification for holding them is for their own protection, and that means federal foster care standards.

No immunity in International Court Crimes Against Humanity Cases for sitting head of state.

I agree that many probably are economic migrants. Don't have evidence for this, but it is probably true. US sanctions though have likely contributed to this.

Without Mexican's doing your basic jobs, California would have fallen into the ocean a long time ago.

I've lived in buildings where some units have Mexican workers shift sleeping 10 to a room.

Homelessness is caused by other things, like destruction of socio-public identity by the Middle-Class Family. Often this has then been compounded by the mental health system and by salvation religion and the recovery movement.

We really have no choice but to go to

    1. Universal Basic Income
    2. Strong Public Housing Offering
    3. Medicare for all with cost controls
    4. At least some basic free college.

Once we have this the real border is in the Social Security Computers. The physical border no longer matters.

And with these, more people will be able to have paying employment and to run profitable businesses than with the way things are now.

Undocumented Americans are de facto residents and do have rights.

Constitutional rights are based on person-hood and jurisdiction, not "citizenship".... Meaning, the constitution uses the terms person and people for the most part, it doesn't differentiate individuals based on legal status. It also precludes that who ever resides in a said jurisdiction is subject to said laws and rights irrespective of legal status.

Also keep in mind that the vast majority of immigration cases are civil and not criminal.

Illegal aliens cost US taxpayers billions
  • ime
FAIR study in 2017 found illegal immigrants are a net consumer of taxpayer benefits worth more than $100 billion a year, not including the cost of enforcing the border.

While federal benefits are supposed to be off limits, in practice many are not. More than 25,000 undocumented workers receive subsidized housing, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Children receive free education and most qualify for English lessons and free school breakfast and lunch.

Illegal immigrants do not qualify for Obamacare but under federal law, hospitals and clinics are required to provide urgent medical care without regard to legal status. Pregnant women are entitled to prenatal and postpartum care under the Women, Infants and Children program. Infant delivery costs are paid for by Medicaid. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found a federal-state immigrant insurance program cost $2 billion a year in emergency treatment, not including the $1.24 billion in infant delivery expenses.

Illegal immigrants are not entitled to food stamps, but families with U.S.-born children are. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, 31% of such families use the SNAP program and more than 50% of Central American families in the U.S. use at least one welfare program.

This is especially true of asylum seekers said Art Arthur, a former immigration judge now with the Center for Immigration Studies, an immigration think tank. Arthur said because there is a three to five year lag time between apprehension and court appearance, young asylum seekers put down roots, allowing many to access programs they are initially unaware or afraid to use.

"You're going to buy a house, get a job, have kids," he said. "So their entire life changes, and that means their claim changes. Because of a lack of a bright line for immigration judges, appeals are endless and people don't leave."

Recognizing that many illegal workers fill jobs communities need, 26 states offer them *state-funded* benefits. New York state offers up to $300 a month in cash assistance. Eleven states offer free or subsidized medical and hospital care. California offers food stamps, legal services and benefits for those over 65 or disabled. Gov. Gavin Newsom recently asked for an extra $50 million from lawmakers to serve the state's illegal immigrant population.

  • Icey
    Skibum, you're denying that....

1- The constitution doesn't address the rights of any specific class of people

2- That the undocumented parents of American citizens are classified as qualified non legal residents when it comes to getting welfare benefits, since those benefits are in effect for their American citizen children.

3- That those who entered as children, who have many relatives in the US, have no criminal records, etc, are generally free from any sort of prosecution. That the vast majority of deportees are deported only after having been arrested for some sort of crime. Hence the policy of prosecutorial discretion. And that there are those who have a right to be here via asylum and temporary protection status laws...

    SJG......WTF?

We really have no choice but to go to

    1. Universal Basic Income
    2. Strong Public Housing Offering
    3. Medicare for all with cost controls
    4. At least some basic free college.

This stuff is just crap and untenable. You are asking for the government to just give this stuff away....money for not working, housing for no money, medicines and treatments for no money and education for no money. Who is going to pay for all of that? More government debt, higher taxes....and who will suffer? The people who work their asses off and pay taxes. No! This country was based on people making their own way. The idea of the government taking care of everyone is anathema to the constitution. It was written to restrict government from sticking its nose into every free person's business. And look at how far we've gotten away from that! We have to pay the government to own a property...every year....forever?! You want to go fishing....you have to pay the government?! They tax you when you earn money, when you spend money and just about every time that you do anything anywhere. It's crap. It has been bringing down the country for the last 100 years and will only continue to take it in the direction of countries that have gone full socialist/communist and have FAILED! What we need is our liberty back. We need to let the safety net go and let people handle their own shit. If you choose to do nothing, then you get NOTHING. Minimum basic income.....for what? It's the fucking story of the ants and the grasshopper....I say fuck the grasshopper!

Oh...and anyone who is against illegal immigration at the southern border is racist. Way to generalize and demonstrate the playbook of the left. If anyone disagrees then they must be anti race, anti woman, anti this, anti that and pure evil. There are people who don't like Mexicans or Latin@s out there just for that reason....but it's not the fucking majority.

Anyone with a brain should be against illegal immigration. Those people don't use up resource? What a fucking lie! The kids go to the schools that citizens have to pay for. They use doctors and hospitals that others pay for. They take jobs that others could take, driving down wages if not flat out replacing others from work. But here comes the old....but they take jobs Americans won't do. Do you know why....because they take less than minimum wage to do the job. Take away the 10 to 20 million illegals (of all races) from this country and look at how the employers would have to scramble to find people to work! They will offer higher wages and benefits because they need to attract people to come and take the jobs.....THEY compete for workers (supply and demand). When there's a flood of cheap labor, down go the wages and benefits because the employers can just throw a stick and hit someone to take the job....for less than minimum wage.

Prim0, we need people "not working".

Lots of things need doing, but not things which the market economy will pay for.

As Buckminster Fuller said, We already produce more than enough of everything. We can take care of every single person even better than it was with royalty in past centuries.

The reason we do not see this is that we demand that everyone prove that they can earn a living.

Our planet Earth is a spaceship. To live on it, one needs some of the life support.

But most paid employment, business, and corporations do not produce any life support, they just use up resources and create pollution.

They don't make money either, only the gov't does that, it's just green ink on paper.

These guards in the detention centers, you know what they must be doing. I am sure that they've got other uniforms folded up and stashed away, like at the bottoms of their lockers. When these internment centers are liberated, these guards will already be long gone. If anyone tries to stop them, they'll just say that they work at Walmart or Burger King, something like that.

Sen. Merkley Condemns Trump’s War Against Migrant Families as U.S. Moves to Indefinitely Jail Kids

The Trump administration is moving to indefinitely detain migrant children and their families, reversing decades of U.S. policy. The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services is expected to issue a new rule today to withdraw from a 1997 federal court settlement known as the Flores agreement, which put a 20-day limit on migrant family detentions. We speak with Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley, who made headlines last year when he was barred from entering an old Walmart where the government was detaining about 1,500 immigrant children in Brownsville, Texas.

California, 18 other states sue over Trump policy on indefinite detention of migrant children

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California opened another front in its legal battle with the Trump administration over immigration policies on Monday as officials announced a federal lawsuit challenging a new rule that allows indefinite detention of migrant children and their families.

The 19-state lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and is co-led by Massachusetts, was unveiled by Gov. Gavin Newsom and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra, who criticized the president for ignoring a court settlement agreement that limited detention of children to 20 days.

“No child deserves to be left in conditions inappropriate and harmful for their age,” Becerra said Monday. “The actions by this administration are not just morally reprehensible, they’re illegal. Children don’t become subhuman simply because they are migrants.”

Pope Francis Condemns Migrant Detention Camps in Christmas Day Address

Millions of people around the world celebrated Christmas Wednesday. Pope Francis prayed for migrants around the world and condemned “inhumane detention camps” during his annual Christmas Day address at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City.

Pope Francis: “May the son of God, come down to Earth from heaven, protect and sustain all of those who, due to these and other injustices, are forced to emigrate in the hope of a secure life. It is injustice that makes them cross deserts and seas that become cemeteries. It is injustice that forces them to endure unspeakable forms of abuse, enslavement of every kind and torture in inhumane detention camps. It is injustice that turns them away from places where they might have the hope of a dignified life but instead find themselves before the walls of indifference.”

And Sanders is only talking about Democratic Socialism.
