Those nerds supposedly live in Pasadena, they are college professors therefore earn good money, they live in shitty apartments and don't have cars. This equals a lot of extra cash and they are a very short distance from COI. Why doesn't Howard the hound just ride his moped to Paradise Showgirls or Spearmint Rhino. They have the money. Wouldn't that make an interesting episode. After all they bought Howard a hooker in Vegas!
(to much time in hotels with the tv on for a mindless distraction)
There was an article a couple of years back in a magazine I was reading and it discussed different TV shows and the places the characters lived, and not to go into the other shows but for what they most likely earned and living in Pasadina (I've never been there but from what I understand is pretty expensive to live there), Lenard and Sheldons apartment was pretty appropriate for their income (and remember, the only one without a car is Sheldon who dosent drive). The thing that they brought up was that Penny the neighbor wouldn't be able to afford such a place only working as a waitress.
When "Friends" was on, I read an article about their apartment. An apartment of that size and location in New York City should be quite expensive and it would have been doubtful they could have afforded it
At least early on, Rachel was a coffee shop waitress and Joey was an unemployed actor. How did they contribute much?
On the latest episode it was revealed that Penny now makes twice what Leonard makes since she became a pharmaceutical rep.
Actually I think the original poster overestimates what professors make. Remember these are not tenured professors, they are young and they are teaching at Cal-Tech. Just because Cal-Tech charges a fortune for tuition doesn't mean they pay well.
Most people who teach at universities like Cal-Tech and MIT do it for the research opportunities as the show portrays. These universities spend tons of money on getting their professors the cool equipment so they can make discoveries and writer papers which increase the prestige of the university and therefore attracts more better students and professors.
The thing that always bothered be about the characters on The Big Bang Theory was how they dressed. Isn't it warm in Southern California? Yet they always dress in layers with long sleeved shirts.
As long as we're way off topic, the thing about the show I've always thought was the most ironic is that the actress that plays Amy (Mayim Bialik) is actually portraying what she really is. She has a PhD in real life in neuroscience from UCLA.
Yeah, I've brought up how they were dressed to someone I knew from SoCal, and he said that their attire was appropriate as that they most likely spent most of their time indoors in the AC
I'm not even sure what a college professor would make these days. Back in the dark ages when I was in school, a hot button topic at the Big 10 University I attended was the low salaries of the assistant and associate professors. It was shockingly low.
PHD associate college profs make $50 to $75K per year to start. Full tenured professors make $125 to $250K depending on dept. and longevity. Why do you think college is so expensive. (regular teachers fresh out of school start at $25 to $35K and move up quickly when they finish their masters) (anyone who tells you different is a liar as I used to be on a small town school board in the midwest and we paid way less than city schools)
This is beside the point. They have money and two of them are horndogs (Howard who lives at home in his mother's paid for house and Raj who is independently wealthy.
I watch the show. It is OK but not as good as a lot of other shows like Modern Family.
Most college professors do not make a lot of money. I remember reading a few years ago about an associate professor at the University of Michigan who seemed to have accomplished everything except winning the Nobel Prize. He made significantly less than me. Life is not fair.
Howard is the only character on The Big Bang who would be likely to go to strip clubs. For all we know, he posts on TUSCL as San_Jose_Guy.
Tired traveller is correct about professor salary ranges. Professor salaries aren't a huge driving factor in tuition costs, especially at major universities. Any professor who doesn't have grants to support themselves probably won't get tenure.
A huge part of the rising costs of university are facilities and amenities. Fancy dorms and rec centers are expensive. Most sports are money losers, even football and basketball outside of most schools. professors represent a visible but modest portion of the total staff.
Anyways, an associate professor making 75k a year with no kids could definitely afford strip clubs.
TiredTraveler, shortly after Howard got engaged to Bernadette, he gave up strip-clubbing; now that they're married (and she's bringing in the big bucks), he really doesn't have much taste for the lifestyle any more. Raj isn't independently wealthy; his parents are, so in addition to his own income, he gets a pretty good allowance, and he wouldn't go to a strip club by himself, let alone without Howard.
To be fair to Friends I think they said Monica and Rachel were squatting in a rent controlled apt that her grandmother lived in! Not sure about Joey and Chandler!
And the episode of Big Bang where Penny worked as an escort has no doubt been produced by Hustler! I bet Ron Jeremy plays Leonard and Bree Olsen plays Penny! Brilliant! ;)
