Bottom line, water is one of the few items we don't pay for. Most everything many in Detroit get is free to them. That begs the question, "Why not water as well?" Pun intended.
I'll bet if you check those without water, all have cell phones, TV, decent cars, etc.
Wow! Over $33 MM is owed. They say some folks are being cut off owing as little as $150. If I owed that much where I live I would have been over a year late (that is both water and sewage.) If it is water alone I would be about 4 1/2 years behind.
You can leave race out of this. There are people all over the US that expect to get things from the government for "free". What they don't realize is that the government doesn't really make any money (aside from printing it), so whatever they're getting for "free" is money out of some working stiff's pocket.
As for corporate welfare...One area I'd love to see numbers on (but don't have the inclination to do the research myself) is the petroleum industry. We always hear about subsidies to oil companies but we don't often hear about the high percentage of the price of a gallon of gas that goes back to the government through taxes.
Could we cut some government jobs by getting rid of the taxes on a gallon of gas and then have the government stop sending that money back to the oil companies. It's just another example of the waste that is GOOBERMENT.

Just some food for thought.
