I haven't noticed a more upbeat vibe at so called gentleman's clubs either. Those clubs may be louder thanks to more people there, but I have also seen a lot more bored looking people sitting in the clubs. The larger crowds mean you often have to contend with more drunks that put dancers in a bad mood, not to mention the bane of many of our existence, the bachelor party.
main thing i dont like about bars is the shift change since alot of times theres not a abundance of dancers there can be that few minutes were there is no dancer on stage..
but gentlemans club sometimes if theres 30-40 dancers there and you happend to see one that catches your eye it might be awhile before you can get to that dancer .. all the clubs around me (10-15 mins away)are straight strip clubs with the exception of 2 and 1 is a dive and the other is decent but lap dances are expensive
So a hybrid approach seems good, if available - a local spot to hang out with a favorite or two, and a gentleman's club for when you need some variety.
Not that I haven't had fun at the locals places but you typically have to be a regular to have fun there, as pointed out.
