I enjoyed the KC ass whoopin

I have to admit that I enjoyed watching KC get its ass handed to it. Not because I dislike good teams repeating, but Mahomes has been getting away with too much nonsense for too long.

Now I'm normally not a guy to complain about officiating. Indeed I can't stand whiny emotional fucks who do it. It is far from a perfect science and often there are bad calls and non-calls going in both directions during a game. But FFS this season it seemed like flags flew any time someone so much as breathed on Princess Mahomes.

Mahomes, seeing that teams were getting gun shy, took advantage of this with his fake non-slide slides and pretending like he was going out of bounds just to squeeze out a few more yards. And when he saw the hit coming, he immediately changed course in order to draw a flag. It was fucking ridiculous.

But at least the refs had enough sense to play it straight when over 100 million people were watching. They let the teams play and we saw the results. No doubt Mahomes is waking up a little sore this morning, lol.

I think yesterday's game was beyond any margin of reasonable refereeing. Philly just abused KC like they owed them money, particularly in the trenches. All of KC's scores were garbage time.

Though when I saw that first offensive PI call, I, like many, thought "the fix is in."

I expected this to be one of the best games in recent years. Never in a million years did I except total domination - especially by Philly

Now don't get me wrong, Mahomes is a damned good QB. By the time his career is over, he will likely join the ranks of Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana with 4+ Superbowl wins and one of the best QBs to ever play the game.

Unfortunately for Mahomes, he just happened to come into his own in the shadow of Tom Brady, the GOAT. Mahomes, like most great quarterbacks, needs the right pieces around him to be successful.

Brady OTOH had the unique ability to transform no-names and misfits into superstars. He inspired such devotion from his receivers that they voluntarily drilled with him during their off seasons so that they could rise to his expectations and even anticipate what he was thinking. This, along with his laser focus, mental toughness and incredible physical skills, are all what allowed him to play in 10 Superbowls for two different teams and win 7 of them.

I'm guessing that Mahomes will see a couple of more Superbowls during his career and will likely win at least one more. But he will never be as appreciated as he probably should be because he's following an impossible act.

Eh, my whining was 100% accurate. The KC refs story has been beaten to death where even the memes have memes. I was expecting more from you. At least your second post had a take. Maybe your first post was a good vanilla way to start a post Super Bowl thread though. Fair enough. On to your other point…

I’m a giants fan and admitted Brady hater. Press is killing him as a broadcaster but I found him innocuous enough yesterday to be fine to listen to during the game. He was actually pretty funny on bourbon street throwing those passes to Gronk and the trombone guy.

Mahomes is amazing but I don’t see anyone rivaling Brady’s numbers. I do think he does just as good a job as Brady in elevating mediocre talent. KC lost its best WR and RB for most of the season. Their line sucks and Kelce is a shell of his former self. He’s more flashy than Brady and has just as good a coach, but they need to improve the personnel around him to stay ahead of Baltimore Buffalo Cincy and maybe the Chargers if they want to keep up this ridiculous streak. I think it’s 7 straight AFC championship game appearances?

My scorecard had the refs' bad calls favoring Philly by one call last night, instead of KC like usual. Their misses were insignificant to the final outcome though.

mahomes and the chiefs will be back next season simply because those other afc teams just keep choking. they don't know how to win and are still trying to figure out that process of overcoming that pressure. so until that time comes keep penciling in kc as afc champs.

hopkins, schuster, and brown-just a couple of years ago a wr trio like that would have been considered a real pain in the ass to cover. what happened to all 3?

Hank, I had Mahomes on my fantasy team, so I paid more attention to KC games than I normally would have. I stand by what I saw regarding some of the ridiculous flags thrown and how Mahomes took advantage of it.

We'll also need to agree to disagree re: player development. I would agree that Mahomes makes those around him better, but Brady was at a whole different level. Countless generations of scrubs cycled into New England over many years, often getting fat contracts a few years later from other teams. In all too many cases they reverted to their means once out of Brady's orbit and the acquiring teams regretted the trades, lol.

^ Brady is an old man compared with Mahomes, he’s a smart guy who figured out a lot about how to make use of his skills, and how he could compensate for his age as he he got older, that said he’s an amazing guy who redefined the quarterback position, maybe Mahomes is an amazing guy also, but he’s got a long way to go before he’ll have the same experience that Brady earned through his longevity. Remember old age and treachery usually beats youth and strength, not always but often enough.

We don’t disagree that Mahomes was getting the benefit of refs’ calls. Or that he was taking advantage of them like good players and teams do. My point was just that the story had been covered for months, but perhaps my point was obfuscated by my whining.

On who is better at elevating other players? Hard to say until Mahomes plays a full career. I don’t think he’ll catch Brady, but his pace on wins and playoffs is ahead of Brady’s. Hell, you might even say that Tomlin and Roethlisbeger were the best. Look at the line of Steeler superstar WR’s who sucked when they left Pittsburgh. Antonio Brown, Ju Ju, Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool, et al.

The result supported the cliche (or truism) that the game is won in the trenches. Philly's OL is dramatically better than KC's and DL significantly better. I expected Philly to win because of that but didn't expect the domination (40-6 before 2 KC TDs during drives that began during last 8 minutes).

I too enjoyed seeing KC's ass handed to it, but mostly because I'm bitter about 49ers' recent 2 Super Bowl losses.

I'm glad I didn't hedge my Philly bet. I actually meant to, but the book closed before I could get it in and I was like fuck it.

My super bowl party had the same discussion about best QBs that Rick discusses. The overwhelming consensus is Brees over Brady (did more with less (i.e. weaker team, harder division), Brees is better at QB position. And, more questionable, Montana overall (no pussy flags, people hit harder, more parity in the league). Mahomes is great, no question.

Lastly, Hopkins is getting old, Shuster is a could've been, and Brown got shut down. To be fair, I don't think deep threats are a thing in the NFL anymore, it's all about confusing short routes and YAC.

@Hank: So it wasn't worth discussing again when a team that won most of its games by a single score, in no small part due to a QB who was enjoying such favorable treatment, makes it to the Superbowl? You have to know that everyone was looking out for it during the game.

But again, fortunately the officiating during the Superbowl was as down the line as it gets. But I won't deny that I was watching intently the first few times that Princess Mahomes took a hit.

Agree, and I'd add that Kelce isn't getting any younger. I still think he's the overall best QB in the league but his O-line sucks and he has no targets.

But I would say there are deep threats; just not many. Tyreek Hill on a go route is still no joke. Nor is Xavier Worthy.

===> "To be fair, I don't think deep threats are a thing in the NFL anymore, it's all about confusing short routes and YAC."

I have to disagree with this. Deep threats are what open up the shorter routes. When a team has no downfield threats, the opposition can bring up the safeties to clog up the slant and crossing routes and to limit YAC.

@PT That stuff runs in cycles, depending on which team becomes very successful, all the other teams try to emulate them, then another coach comes along, with a new wrinkle, and the wheel spins round again, it's cyclical just like every thing old becomes new again.

^ agreed Hurts seems like the truth, good win for him especially after he got screwed at Bama. Best part, his fiancée is an engineer and has no social media presence.

My biggest bet was for both teams each to score 18.5 points -206 odds. I thought this was very unlikely to lose. Laid way too much on that, I was biting my nails the entire 4th quarter until Mahomes dropped a bomb with 1:56 left in the game to push them over at 20.

My winningest bet was who would catch the longest pass. Thank you, Xavier, at over 9-1. Also hit on who would kick the longest field goal and a 4 pick parlay. We'll be eating like fucking kings at monthly poker with the food budget bet on Philly.

I just wanted to give a shout out to this thread at (now) 27 comments. This is mostly because the other related thread is at 80+ comments, and somehow that just feels unbalanced lol

I do remember it being commented on once that the Chiefs have a tendency for turn things around at the end of their games and finish off strong. And this game played out similar in that way. But it turns out that 5 touchdowns during the last 10 minutes or so is too tall of an order 👀

avatar for rickdugan

===> "^ KC's touchdowns were garbage time."

Yup. And for anyone who doesn't know what that means, "garbage time" happens when a game is such a blowout that there is no realistic chance for the other team to come back in the time remaining. So the defensive players on the winning team start to dial it back just a notch because they don't want to risk injury to prevent a score that doesn't matter.

Each one of those dudes is a multi-millionaire who views himself as a self-contained business with a long term revenue stream to protect. In situations like the 4th quarter of a blowout game, they start making what is commonly referred to as "business decisions" lol.

I hate all Philly teams, because their fans are assholes. That said, I wanted KC to lose, for one reason and one reason only: the Taylor Swift thing.

Politics aside (she endorsed Kamala which is mind-boggling for anyone with an iota of intelligence) I'm just sick of seeing her injected into the game of football.

She looks like a nice piece of ass, and congrats to Travis for bedding that bitch. But when I watch a football game, I don't want it to be about her. She and the Chiefs can all go fuck themselves. I'm glad they got steamrolled.

But Taylor, if you get tired of your man, feel free to give me a call. You can write a song about what an asshole I am, that's fine with me.

@shailynn oh man, I'm glad it worked out for you on that bet! Hopefully your winnings can pay for a good manicure... ;-)

@rickdugan for me, "garbage time" also means that because a game is out of reach, I literally start gathering up my garbage with about 15 minutes left--the empty pizza box into the trash bin, the soda bottles into the recycle bin, etc. That way, I can leisurely watch the post-game ceremony without feeling like I really need to start cleaning up. :)
