Like what the actual fuck? I don't understand why the fuck any adult would watch Japanese cartoons. It was ok in grade school but like damn do u never grow up the fuck? I can say without fail almost all adults I've met that watch anime have some very serious issues.
Watch it without preconceptions. Lots of good stories in anime. Bleach, Naruto, The Last Airbender, Dragonball, and lots of others have great stores with adult oriented (and that doesn't mean porn), thought provoking themes.
Sure, there are some goofy tropes, because Japan, but there are also some really, really good stories there.
I don't watch a lot of anime. I also don't know a lot about it. But I do know that there's more than one kind of anime. There is definitely a wing of anime that's intended for children. But there's also anime targeted at adult-age audiences. I enjoy some of that.
(And that remains true for anything animated, be it Japanese or not.)
Anywho, I recently watched and enjoyed "Memories" (1997) and "Pantheon" (2022). I recommend both.
"Pantheon" might be a bit of a stretch as it's anime style but not really Japanese. It's based on the short fiction of definitely-not-a-children's-science-fiction-author Ken Liu, who is very good all on his own.
Even since I was a kid, I didn't like anime. It seemed cheap and foreign. Fast forward to about 10 years ago. College Homecoming weekend and my old frat had a cookout for the alumni. My pledge brothers and I were getting to know the new guys, who were eager to learn more about my particular pledge generation. We had incident with the Dean of Students that resulted in her firing and us becoming legendary. They legit asked us "What kind of anime did you guys watch Saturday nights?" We were unanimous in our answer: Anime? Saturday night is for chasing pussy.
That kind of sums up adults that watch anime. For me, every Saturday night from college is the same memory - whether on campus or off, whether our hall or a different frat's hall: beer, weed, chasing tail.
Let's flip the script a bit. I've never watched Anime, and I'm not sure I'm even smart enough or imaginative enough to understand it. But, the 2 girls I have crossed paths with over the years that were into Anime were absolute freaks in bed (in a good way).
I'll tell you what, if I hear one more 4 figure quote for OTC from one of these strippers, ONE MORE I'm going right to start fucking those weird anime pillow things, you know the ones that all those anti social japanese gamer dudes love to try to marry. ONE MORE FUCKING TIME. DON'T TRY ME, I'LL DO IT.
Anime always seemed stupid to me. The same style of Japanese cartoon shit over and over. The ramones-core of comics. Also, I always thought it was weird that Japanese people drew people that looked more Caucasian than Japanese. Like, self-loathing much, Japanese dude? During my trips to Japan, I've seen lots of that art everywhere, it's pervasive. The one time I got taken to a Japanese comic book store, I though "holy shit there is a lot of this stuff, these Japanese sure do go deep on their hobbies". Now it's a global phenomenon. Annoying.
Honestly I loved anime when I was Luke 13. Maybe even as old as 15 or 16 tops when I started thinking ok this shit is stupid and all the same. To be fair a lot of American shows with real people are stupid and got the same old tired lines and trends too. But God damn anime is so fucking childish and I've tried to watch it again as an adult and I just can't even.
I have met a lot of strippers that love anime. I will concur with what funonthaside said about girls who watch anime being some of the biggest freaks in the bedroom. I can't say I have ever watched it, but I have heard Attack on Titan is legit.
I feel like chicks that are freaks in bed got low self esteem. Let the guy do the heavy lifting, quite literally. Guys exist to kiss women's asses and give us money and please us 😉
Like apparently I recently heard from a guy irl that there are a lot of girls apparently that will lick a guy's butthole??? LIKE WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK? or stick a finger in a guy's butthole? again what the actual fuck??? if yall gotta do that shit to a guy he is fucking gay in the closet k
People that like Anime are no different than adults who like SciFi, super heroes or fantasy movies like Harry Potter or Twilight or who like to play video games. It is just an escape from reality and some of them actually have pretty good story lines. I'm not a fan of anime but I do love a good SciFi movie or show and spend a few hours a week playing video games.
I think the people with the bigger problem are those that would judge people for what they find entertaining. After all, a lot of people would judge all of us on this site for liking strip clubs and say it makes us deviants. I've even heard people criticize anyone that watches pro sports because "it is nothing more than grown adults playing a kid's game." To me as long as it isn't illegal why would I care what someone likes to watch for entertainment.
Idk I've found that judging people helps filter out the trash. Sure maybe 1/10 adults that watch anime isn't utter trash but why waste time figuring it out?
(This will date me) I only watched one Anime series, in my preteen years: Star Blazers (Japan called the series “Space Battleship Yamato”). This is America’s OG Anime as it was the first space opera translated to English for American TV. Very serious Japanese culture elements such as respecting the experience of the elderly commander, fighting one battle that is death or victory, and death having its own honor. Interesting fact regarding George Lucas writing of Star Wars: “the space opera element is something that has its roots in much of anime and manga. Specifically the work of Leiji Matsumoto on series like Space Battleship Yamato.”
I think whodey makes a good point. This site is primarily populated by people who actively hide (or lie about) how they frequently spend/make their money for fear of being judged (or worse). I mean, I don't see anyone here using their real name or putting a LinkedIn URL in their profile.
So... yeah, in that context, I guess you caught me. I fully confess to occasionally enjoying more things.
I have never watched anime. I had to look it up on Wikipedia - I knew it was animation but thought it was the cartoon porn i see advertised on porn hub.
I’ve never seen a Marvel movie, nor have I’ve watched Harry Potter, Twilight or Lord of the Rings. The only Star Wars movie I watched was the first one around 1977. Didn’t like it.
But then I watched hole to hole coverage of the US Women’s Open at Pebble Beach.
So not sure where I fit on the spectrum of normalcy.
I knew a stripper once that was into anime. Specifically hentai, the porn variant. She liked showing me her ahegao face. Google it if you don’t know what it is. She was a total freak.
Oh. My. God. Have former besties nicespice and blahblah finally broken up? Did blahblah stab nicespice in the back over her love of anime and pikachu? Will they ever come back together? Will nicespice and nicole1994 ever go shopping again? OMG OMG OMG OMG This drama is fo real, THIS DRAMA IS SO FO REAL!!!!
The only "anime" I've ever seen is Krieger's hologram girlfriend on Archer. I don't get the whole anime thing, but my two favorite shows are Archer and South Park, so who am I to judge?
I like anime sometimes. Its just a medium. Lots of good and lots of cringy bad. Write a good story and ill consume it no matter what medium. Certainly no less cringy than tik tok videos
Must be lots of guys into it, as there is a cam girl site where girls have tip menu which includes ahegao, which is as far as I can tell, merely a girl doing a pose with her eyes.
I remember when I was working at this one titty bar a few months ago when it was slow, I was chatting with this one patron. I usually say that I am a lower age than I actually am for younger customers and that time was no exception. Then I referenced some anime TV show and he got all excited. Then there is some talking back and fourth on the subject.
Then he said “so I graduated high school waaaaaay back in 2011 and back then if you admitted to liking any of that you were a complete loser. But you young girls are into it and open about it and that’s so awesome”
Since I had already lied to him, I couldn’t admit that was when I graduated high school as well. But I knew what he meant. Back then, being part of the “media arts club” was worse social suicide than joining a science or chess team. But when I thought about it, the guy had a point. Gen Z made that stuff mainstream and I salute them for having good taste 😋
So, being on the chess team was faggy in 2011? Cool I was on the chess team in 1976 and no one thought it was faggy, but being on the football and baseball teams was faggy, so I was a 2/3 fag.
blahblah23 was born 30-40 years too late. she would have fit in better during the 70-90's era.
anime, chess, and all the rest that is considered socially awkward should not a correlated to faggotry but instead be attributed to being a nerd. there is a big difference among the two. we're all living in modern times such that it is now more acceptable for younger kids to nerd out. even some of today's cool kids admit to nerding out to anime.
so yeah gen z should be feel very fortunate to be living in present times. admitting to liking anime would have had any kid shunned by many social circles going way back in time. in some instances that shit could even be a cause for getting a brutal ass kicking.
I think back in the day since PCs were so expensive, nerds weren't at home reading manuals and practicing FORTRAN. Probably the only outlet nerds had back then was tinkering with their cars or other various small engines. Maybe building radios and shit. Memorizing the bible, who knows. If we had mainstream internet in the 70s a lot of this stuff would have been normalized a long time ago.
I'm older so for me animation is Disney movies, Warner Brothers cartoons, the Jetsons and Jonny Quest. A friend showed me that Ghost in the Shell animated film and I enjoyed it and I've seen a few Miyazaki movies, but it seems like there is so much Japanese animation being put out that you couldn't even watch ten percent of it and a lot of it would be pretty mediocre. It would be a little like science fiction novels when I was a kid: there's a lot of it and 90% of it is crap. That probably is true, as the sci-fi writer Theodore Sturgeon once said, of anything.
90% of anime is crap. Lots of plots can be summed up as 'loser gets very powerful and shows everyone how cool and badass he is now". That other 10% tho is pretty good!

'Like 13. Somebody teach me how to type'
Oh? And here I thought you found religion, hooked up with that foghorn character and were repenting by quoting bible verses.

Maybe give it a try sometime.
