Putin going on high alert with his nukes is troubling, but he has a long history of flexing with hyperbolic threats. That said, the troubling part is that in order for nuclear deterrence theory to be valid, there's a base assumption that everyone with control over nukes is rational and possesses at least a lowest-common-denominator baseline of morals/humanity. Unfortunately, this statement does not necessarily apply to Putin.

So, we have to look to the military leaders around him and the oligarchs to (hopefully) cut the wire between Putin and the nukes if he is, in fact, unhinged from reality.

Well, for my sake, if he does fire them off, he's goes all out with it...

Living within 50 miles of 60% of the stored weapons, and closer than that to a Trident base... It'll be over before I know about it.

I can't imagine he's stupid enough to think he's going to live more than an hour after giving that order. Whether it's followed or not. I can't imagine he's mad enough to not care. But that's a pretty serious question at this point.

It's understandable why he'd think he'd just roll over Ukraine. Last week everyone seemed to think it'd be over hours after rolling across the border. but, what, 4 days later, they still have power, internet, social media, are sending 100's of videos of destroyed Russian vehicles and planes left on youtube... The only thing the Red Army's really managed to capture and hold is Chernobyl...

At this point, he's probably terrified of NATO deciding to enforce a no fly zone, letting Ukraine's army move at will and really fuck them over. And scaring them with nukes is about the only option he has.

Ona REAL news show, Fox News Sunday, Condoleeza Rice was asked about Putin's threat. Her sobering comment was that Putin has descended to a troubling level of irrationality that she has never witnessed before. Putin is 69. He's well into the age of dementia and other disease. Just look at our own senile leaders and least coast members. Putin has also made some distinctly uncharacteristic speeches and outbursts since just before and during the Ukraine invasion. He may have become unhinged. If he absurdly believes that a loss in the invasion of Ukraine is an existential threat to his grip on power, he would order nuclear strikes. His bomber force is no concern to the US. They could never cross Canada, the Atlantic, Pacific, or Gulf of Mexico to reach us without being utterly obliterated. Assume at least 50% of his SLBM force refuses orders to launch, assume that our attack subs knock out at least 25% of what is remaining, and he has 3-4 left. That's NYC, DC, Kitsap WA, and London (probably Brussels, too). However, he may have direct control over at least some of the Russian ICBMs, and their Doomsday Machine is still active. Yes, the USSR and now Russia has a machine which will automatically launch strategic ICBMs in the event of a western nuclear launch. These would be the hypersonic glide vehicles supposedly capable of dodging our anti-missile defenses.

This video lists some of the general strategic targets for nuclear weapons at 2:50 www.youtube.com. Defense strategists also aim nuclear weapons at population centers for second strike and demoralization attacks. It's frightening, and there is absolutely nothing we can do to stop it. Remember that Putin is an old, hard-line, Soviet-style cold warrior. They openly planned using nuclear weapons in first-strike scenarios against non-nuclear countries.

FEMA has issued an advisory to be followed in the event of a nuclear attack:

“Get inside the nearest building to avoid radiation. Brick or concrete are best. Go to the basement or middle of the building. Stay away from the outer walls and roof. Try to maintain a distance of at least six feet between yourself and people who are not part of your household. If possible, wear a mask if you’re sheltering with people who are not a part of your household.”

This is not from a parody website. It’s an official statement directly from your federal government. If nuclear bombs start dropping around you, be sure and socially distance.

The comments from Condoleeza Rice are concerning regarding Putin.

This is just baseless speculation. What if Putin knows he has some sort of terminal illness and he doesn’t care about being the villain? He’s already stated he views the collapse of the former Soviet Union was a tragedy. This could be a last ditch effort on the part of a deranged man - who doesn’t have long to live?

I hope there are high ranking folks who can stop him - before he pushes it beyond the point of no return.

Now would be a good time to watch the movie Dr Strangelove. Stanley Kubrick initially intended it to be a serious drama about the threat of nuclear war, but it became a dark comedy when he realized the real threat was from the deranged old men who had their fingers on the burton.
