Patrol Boy

Life has changed from when I was a kid. One of my new clients has a son. He just turned 10. He is on an IEP (no idea why after researching the matter other than his parents think it will help him) and will be in the third grade next fall. During the summer I was 10 I was getting ready to go into 5th grade, but was really looking forward to becoming a "patrol boy" in the sixth grade. Yes, boy, not person becuase girls were not allowed to be patrol boys.
I went to an elementary school (grades 1-6) down the street from the high school, in the era of great cars and massive horsepower. Driving by the corner down the street from my school on my way to court the other day, I watched Framingham, MA police sergeant stop traffic and escort children across the street. I laughed because he was the current version of a patrol boy. This country and world have deteriorated to the point where a police office, with 6 service stripes and a pistol now does the same job I did when I was 11. I had a white belt and shoulder strap and a little silver badge and in 1968, at an intersection of roads with a 35 mph speed limit and a high school I would step into traffic, hold up my hands, stop cars and permit children to cross. No matter the weather I was there 40 minutes before school and 40 minutes after school. late for work? Tough shit, the 11 year old is stopping you and you better stop. Everyone did. Imagine any 11 year old you know doing this today. Not a chance in hell. Damn this used to be one fine muthafucka of a country. Now its a diverse shithole, filled with 2 genrations of kids and foreigners that left wingers have taught to hate America. Maybe Trump is too stupid to make this a great country again, but to pretend the the present version isn't a total fubar failure takes a level of stupidity I could never attain. My America was great. Yours simply sucks.

Was the sergeant an SRO? I agree that crossing guard duty is below the pay grade of a sergeant, but no SRO should be less than a sergeant.

Legal liability was far greater back then than it is now after years of "tort" reform. A broken, dominate arm was worth at least 25k in 1985 and is worth about half of that now.

Now its a diverse shithole,

Diverse shithole? While I dont advocate for diversity in particular, I do advocate for fighting against discrimination.to assume that Just because a country is flooded with foreginers implies that it is a "shithole" is discriminatory. This is because while certain extreme left wing political philosophies (I.g extreme open borders etc) may lead to an excessive influx of foreginers, associating foreigners with shithole as opposed to the liberal philosophies that result in them coming here is discriminatory.

Like can you make it any more evident that you're racist? Lol.

Not all of America is a diverse shithole. The following is a partial list: Detroit; Washington D.C,; Los Angeles; Sacramento; Seattle; Hartford; Baltimore; Philadelphia; Minneapolis; Miami; Las Vegas. Yes I did leave off some cities which others may consider shitholes. I probably do as well, they just aren't diverse. Hating foreigners is not racist, but a pompous, ignoramus may not understand what racism really means.
avatar for future POTUS and Senator in training
Ok you might not be "racist" in the technically sense.but my above comment explained how you were discriminatory against foreigners , as you made a comment that was discriminatory in nature against people of varying ethnicities , which is an offense that is equivalent in nature and extent to "being racist" .

“In1968 there was a worldwide escalation of social conflicts, predominantly characterized by popular rebellions against military and bureaucratic elites, who responded with an escalation of political repression.

In the United States these protests marked a turning point for the civil rights movemens which produced revolutionary movements...

Waves of social movements throughout the 1960s began to shape the values of the generation that were college students during 1968

The environmental movement can trace its beginnings back to the protests of 1968. The environmental movement evolved from the anti-nuclear movement.

On March 6, 500 New York University (NYU) students demonstrated against Dow Chemical because the company was the principal manufacturer of napalm, used by the U.S. military in Vietnam.”

Yes; 1968 was a great year for America!

Don't blame Skibum, what's he got to look forward to, Geriatric Senile Suicidal Pot Head. Waiting to be chained by the wrists and ankles to an iron bed frame in a nursing home. Afraid to drink his orange juice, so they insert a feeding tube and use a funnel to just poor it in. And this is happening underneath an oxygen mask.

skibum609, are you joking?

Of all the things to focus on you decide to pick the most trivial: crossing guards. And seriously, 11 year olds should be able to cross the street using street lights or by looking at traffic, not by having another 11 year old stop traffic. I mean really, 11 years old is 6th grade. For me that was the first year of middle school. I knew how to cross the street safely in elementary school. And the same for my friends. Were you only there to help the slow kids? ;)

The only reason we have adults helping students cross the street is that we live in a litigious society. Kids today are perfectly capable of learning to cross the fucking street! Immigrants too. In fact, I suspect there are roads in Chinese and Indian cities you’d probably hesitate to cross. But somehow Chinese and Indian kids learn to cross the fucking road!

Relax. For a guy that claims to smoke marijuana you really get angry about a lot of things. I can think of three explanations for that. First, marijuana isn’t as brilliant for helping people relax as they claim it is. Second, you don’t react to marijuana properly. Or third, you aren’t smoking enough marijuana.

You should figure out which issue it is. See whether your friends get angry about crossing guards and gauge the amount of marijuana they’re smoking. Then smoke that amount and see if it helps! ;)

SJG -You never answered. Do you work you pathetic cretin? Brilliant response 4got. You also missed the point. Youy also project your own emotions to my typed words on the screen, whoich is arrogant and leads you to assume things that don't exist. My point was that I grew up in a society where peoplerespected each other and the rule of law enough so that an 11 year old then could do the same job as a Police Sergeant does now. We have had crossing guards since well before I was born in 1957 so to blame it on today's litigious society simply is false and denies history. Now you are 0 for 2. Kids of all races are capable of crossing the road. They are for the most part not the best judges of safety, which is why we have crossing guards. The anger is yours bud, not mine and it is shown by your hysterical, misinformed, incorrect assumption ridden response. If you're trying to be SJG jr., try fighting with Icey more, since he holds the crown. Now I just got high after my wonderful trip Wegmans and I have steak tips to marinate.

Ski, it sounds like you're looking for things to be miserable about. I agree that there are a lot of things to be disgusted about, especially in an atrocious Nanny State like MA, but this isn't one of them.

They no longer use children for this because crossing guards sometimes get injured or even killed by inattentive motorists. From 1993-2008, 120 crossing guards were killed in the U.S. and thousands were injured by motorists. We just had one killed two years ago in our own school district.

So I hear you, but you might want to pick something more egregious to use as your stalking horse - there are certainly plenty to choose from.

You did “research” (google search for 5 minutes) on IEPs then from that concluded one won’t help a 10 year old boy?

That speaks volumes about your ignorance. You don’t know shit.

So you’re proud of your generation because you helped kids cross the street when you were 11? Was this an accomplishment for you personally at the time?

At 11 I was home alone every night with full care of my baby sister until my mom got home before I went to school. After school I walked alone to various places across major highways, to buy food, to do laundry and sometimes hang out in a place that had AC during the warm weather before my mom left for work. And I was born in the 80s.

I did more shit than you at 11, and I’m still educated now enough to know what an IEP is and why it’s so important for any child with a disability from autism, to Down’s syndrome, to cerebral palsy to speech delays or hearing impairment. Any child with any disability benefits greatly from and IEP.

So 11 year old you that wasn’t as cool as you think can kiss my 11 year old ass.

I kinda' see the IEP criticism though. Our public schools blow a shit ton of money on retarded kids who, regardless of what anyone does for them, will be lucky if they can even cook their own dinner when they're 30.

Then there are the school systems that use special ed designations for disadvantaged kids with behavioral problems, blowing massive resources on kids who we know will be lucky if they can even read once they are socially promoted out of the high school.

It seems to me that our resources could be better spent helping a greater number of people instead of blowing massive amounts per capita on kids who are just going to end up on state assistance or in jail anyway.

When I was growing up my family moved to Long Island, NY, one thing that seems different from many other areas was our schools were mostly located on less traveled roads not usually on a main thoroughfare mostly one or two blocks off the main streets in mainly residential neighborhoods, that was safer than having large groups of children crossing busy roads, The safety patrol was made up usually of older kids from grades 7-9 (jr. high) and people stopped when they raised their paddles to allow the children and teenagers to cross.

The last 2 generations of parents raised children who are simply ill equipped to deal with life, being protected from failure, diverse opinions, bad words, adventure and taught Barney bullshit such as competition and winning doesn't matter. Why else would mass/school shootings only apply to them and not prior generations where we all had guns? Guns are not the problem, progressivesraising loser children is the problem. Look at SJG, cannot even make up a lie about working somewhere. Now it is time to mow 1/2 acre lawn with a push mower. Kids are very coddled.... and its not helping them. Kids need to learn coping skills, let them fail, solve some of their own problems with other kids....just guide them a little.

As for mass shootings....Not everyone committing them is a millennial. The Vegas shooter was 64. But when we do get into kids and young people... it isn't about guns, although a lack of access to guns would help. The real culprit are the parents and their lack of guidance...these kids tend to have very poor role models who never taught them coping skills, which in turn leaves them immature and with poor impulse control, the inability to rationalize consequences or accept blame for their own defects. Poor to nonexistent communication skills...

skibum609, honest question here: are you serious?

I get it, you don’t like progressives. It just seems like you really zoomed in on the most trivial and apolitical issue imaginable here. I was going to joke around with the question of whether you were sure you were actually a “patrol boy” or whether you were just one of the slow kids and they told you that you were a patrol boy so you wouldn’t feel bad when they dressed you up in reflective clothing so people knew to stop their cars.

But now I think you are just putting us on. I’m 99% convinced that flagooner’s primary goal in his “political” posts is getting people worked up. He doesn’t care about the details of reactions, he just loves reading the circle jerk that ensues. I’ve always thought you were both a nice enough guy and 100% sincere. Unbalanced and ill-informed, but still sincere. But this thread is a bridge too far!

On the other hand, if you are sincere in this thread I have a question: did they strap a helmet to you head so you didn’t hurt yourself during your patrol boy days? If so, I have to break the news to you that “patrol boy” was just a euphemism for “one of the slow kids that might walk into traffic if left to his own devices” ;)

I think that there are plenty of good Gen X and even Millennial parents. I see them all the time where I now live. I tend to think that your view is skewed because of where you work and what you do. You see the worst of it, when things have gone wrong and decisions are made by a court. What you don't see as easily are all those who have no need for a court because they are shouldering the load.

Tough enough world for kids anyway, but kids born in an out of wedlock situation run a 125 yard dash and not 100.

Come on skibum609, you criticize jester214 for commenting on a typo after you got on san_jose_guy’s case for using “looser” rather than “loser”. Let’s get real. Any TUSCL poster who doesn’t make the occasional typo is likely to be putting too much time into their posts ;)

There are two things I just don’t get about this thread. First, why you keep doubling down on this. Admit it: the whole “kids these days are too stupid to cross the street because their parents are progressives” is stupid.

Second, if you really believe what you’re saying then the world is fucked. If so, why do you care? If we’ve reached the point where kids can’t cross the street there is literally you can do about it. A rational person would just enjoy themselves. Why not do that?

But you are keeping on this thread obsessively. So either the horrible situation you have constructed in your mind really bothers you or you are enjoying yourself because you’re trolling us. If the latter, I have one thing to say: brilliant trolling!

You might ask why I’m responding given that I think this is either trolling or profoundly stupid. Simple answer to that: I want to see how far you’ll run with something that is possibly the most trivial complaint ever posted on TUSCL! ;)
