Actually when I was around middle school age, it was common to use the spelling "gurl" to describe an actual girl, in a friendly way.

Like before all middle schoolers had cell phones, and girls used to pass notes to each other in class or between classes, it wasn't uncommon for the first sentence to be "hey gurl!" or "what's up gurl?"

I've never heard of it being used to describe trans people either. Maybe it's a generational thing.
