They were not prostitutes. During WWII they were mostly Chinese conscripted against their will to service Japanese soldiers.

The Comfort Women program ias not just a euphemism, it was a brutal war atrocity that Japan committed against the people of China, Korea, Taiwan, and other nations.

The term you're digging around for is 'sex slaves'.

What thao and ishmael have already said. They were prisoners of war who were abused.

Im showing my age, but I was not too familiar with them until today. In a wierd way it seems like a lot of girls who work in massage parlors (at least NY/NJ) are in the same predicament. Tricked into the line of work and then shuttled from parlor to parlor with no idea where they will work next. Thats while although ive always been intrigued by getting a happy ending at a massage parlor I have decided not to. Id take a LDK from a buxom brazilian/dominican who is happy to do it over a HJ at a massage parlor for a sex slave

Well, being tricked and then transported, that's what we call trafficking, and the penalties are severe, but the crime is poorly defined. But that is also the main way today that puritanicals justify the criminalization of all prostitution.

I can tell that you are young. When I was in school we learned all about WWII.

The Comfort Women issue is still a source of contention between Japan and its neighbors.

@NJBalla at first I was tempted to tell you that information on Wikipedia must always be verified independently, but I decided to click on the link, it spells it out the comfort women that you refer to as a nice euphemism for prostitutes were actually victims of Tojo, and Hirohito, it might behoove you to look into this a bit before you repeat propaganda from the 1930s and 1940s.

It really was a severe atrocity and one of the most disgraceful things any country has done.
