OT: Supreme Court rules in favor of allowing states to legalize sports betting

Since people will bet on sports whether it is legal or not, might as well legalize it so it can be regulated, and at the same time states will be able to capitalize on revenue generated from it.

I’m wondering how this ruling will affect the sports books in Vegas. I think they will suffer due to a drop in tourism. If you want to bet on a sporting event, why travel to Vegas if you can now legally do it at home?

What JAprufrock said!

I am in favor of sex.

But I would prefer if gambling, drugs, and alcohol would vanish.

Specifically about legalizing sports betting, I would prefer if they would not do that.

And even more focused, I want to eliminate all of these state lotteries, starting with California's.

And then about the laws against prostitution, while it may be legalized, I think there are far more ways around it which could be put into practice right now, than people realize.

People are going to bet on sporting events, legal or not. But this does not need that it needs to be increased by making it legal.

And then there is absolutely no reason at all for states to be in the gambling business, with their lotteries.

Will this take much business away from Vegas?

NO FUCKING WAY this will not hurt Vegas. Right now Vegas is making more money in their clubs than their casino floors. I play poker all the time in casinos through out the midwest and at EVERY SINGLE TABLE there's always someone talking about "I just got back from Vegas" or "I'm going to Vegas next month." They can literally play poker in their back yard but they still go to Vegas.

When you go to Vegas you can only bet on the current games (and a few futures) anyway. Think about it, you think some fuck in Erie PA is gonna say "damn I can sports bet at Presque Isle Downs & Casino, now I'll never have to go to Vegas again!" I don't think so.

Also, bookies are also still going to do fine since they won't be giving up 10, 12 or 20 percent to the state or the sports leagues as well.

This doesn't affect people who are already betting, this affects guys who currently don't know anyone to bet with, and may get a few new fans interested in the leagues now that they can legally wager. Look at what sites like Draftkings did for Nascar and MLB. Since when did most people south of the Mason Dixon line give a fuck about Nascar? "Oh I can bet on the races now? sign me up!"

Well I see your point. I’m not much of a gambler, but enjoy hitting Vegas annually for the scene; shows, food, and entertainment.

I guess my inquiry is whether the sports books will get hit at all. Will this be a win for the states to grab a piece of that pie?

I mean I used to go to Vegas explicitly for opening weekend for March madness college basketball tournament. I can stay home starting in 2020 and bet on all of the games from a local venue.

All of my friends have done the Vegas thing enough, now we can meet in other locations to mix things up a bit.

Vegas is still a destination. As someone who goes there often, I don't go to do sports betting, but I always do it anyways while I'm there and in the betting mood. I think the ones that will really suffer are the offshore online sportsbooks, namely Bovada.

I casually have used Bovada, mainly for college basketball (which I personally feel is the best sport for big money parlays). But now, if a legal physical sportsbook

*but now, if a legal sportsbook opens in my state, or there's a reputable stateside online sportsbook available to use in my state, I would never go back to Bovada. This completely screws them.

I never thought how this will actually add business to the Vegas casinos until I read on article that Caesar’s is poised to take advantage of it. They already have the platform and the brand name when states go online with gambling. The casinos can make it accessible across the nation, and with their brand recognition people can tap into it quite easily.

I just don’t know if I will gamble any more or any less. Playing poker with friends scratches my gambling itch, much like how strip clubs scratch that womanizing itch we have even though we can be in committed relationships.

Good call Shailynn. I’d bet on the Indians making it back to the World Series soon, maybe this year.
