Today, Starbucks announced it was installing filters on its' WiFi servers at their stores to filter out porn sites. Anti-porn organizations have been pressuring them to stop people from enjoying themselves watching Porn while drinking overpriced coffee. Oh well, another business restricting our freedoms.
No big loss. They opened a Starbucks inside the Kroger grocery store that I shop at, about a month ago. I was shopping around 9AM yesterday and they had no customers.
funny, because there's a Starbucks near my crib and I've surfed porn on there multiple times. I use to do it at McDonald's but then they put a filter on their internet service. I see Starbucks has now done the same. :-(
There's things you can use hotspots for and for other things- a good 4G plan and a seat near the window. Most they can do is ask you to leave!
Ironically a couple years ago TUSCL was censored at a Tim Horton's in Southfield MI and I had to turn off and restart my android device when I got home, the porn blocker was still working when I left the establishment. Worse yet, it was totally possible at that time to browse Backpage escort ads while it was blocking forums-- I had to try and that was the case at the time (wouldn't know, I never went back to that particular outlet). If I want to surf uninterrupted, 4G works even if it is slower.
WA bikini barista cafes rule. You can surf porn while actual camel toe is in the air. We got weed too. I may be weened from strippers for a good while. Grins.
larry, when I moved out here, I was researching Internet providers. It took awhile before I decided which one would supply me the Internet. The local Starbucks provided access, where I was able to access TUSCL and occasionally PornHub. I now have home service, so I'm good. I've never in my entire life paid the outrageous cost of "Starbucks" coffee.
Was at the dealership today having my car serviced and was browsing tuscl on my phone to pass time. Only thing that had me self conscious was some of the cam adds off to the side, and the stick figures "doing it" at the bottom of the page. Had to kind of keep my phone hidden whenever someone would walk by. :-)
LOL, I hear ya, maho. While at Starbucks, I had to keep an eye on customers milling around waiting for their food items. The last thing I needed was some custy telling the Starbucks staff what I was up to.
I'm sad you can't use this site at Starbucks, Mars, and other alien planets. We need our strip club comments be able to get posted anywhere online. Having our freedoms denied to grown adults, that is sad.
We have a right to view porn. However, that does not imply that a person has a right to view it on a system that is provided by another person/entity. There are a lot of good reasons not to allow this. First of all, potential exposure of kids to porn. Second, the sensibilities of the system owner who is, after all, paying for it. Finally, there is the bandwidth consumed. At our marina, the Wi-Fi provider services 600 boats and the system is constantly at a crawl. Some friends had their own hotspot, unsecured (duh!). Their neighbor tapped into their system and was streaming video, making it impossible for them to use their own system. They hit the OFF switch and heard a satisfying stream of invective from the next boat. Their hot spot is now secured!
That does suck to have it filtered, but I do have to agree with ATACdawg since I work in IT. It does use alot of bandwidth like YouTube and any other streaming media. Plus it's a big security threat to Starbucks network despite how they may segregate from the corporate network. Oh well, I enjoy Starbucks, but I've never used their Wifi. I'm too lazy to connect to it and accept whatever warning before browsing.
When I was still working every department in the company had computers but most were strictly for intranet use. My department was one of the few that had internet access because there were rare times when we could actually use it. But talk about filters. Sometimes I just had to shake my head in disbelief.
Panera blocks TUSCL. I just use cell data instead. Except for the webcam ads and stick figure, there is no porn on TUSCL and there shouldnt be (except as links). You cant post inline images in posts. I browse TUSCL in public with images turned off. Makes the site 100% child friendly.
Coffee, Tea, lots of parading around. But that is it.
No touching, no OTC.
If you treat them right, they are ordinary young women who like the kinds of things other ordinary young women like, such as going out on civilian dates. Sometimes they get really flirty too. But these are 100% civilian venues.
They don't care what you connect to over their Internet, but then I cannot see why anyone would be watching the Internet when in a Viet Coffee Shop.
"... I browse TUSCL in public with images turned off. Makes the site 100% child friendly ..."
Almost - I wish there was a way to turn-off avatars since many are of nude chicks and I often surf TUSCL at a Starbucks or other public place using my 17" laptop (and due to poor sight I have to zoom-in to make the text bigger and thus also the avatars are bigger and more visible)
I agree with you, sjg, it would be nice to have Vietnamese coffee shops here. We don't as far as I know. I've always felt there are some exquisite young Vietnamese women.
I find establishments that use OpenDNS for filtering often block both TUSCL and StripperWeb as "porn." Easy enough to circumvent with a VPN tunnel, SSH tunnel or 4G hotspot.
it also seems that are some establishments where they don't want people to just hang-out and web-surf (or at least too long) - in South Beach there are a couple of Starbucks and the two I normally visit and hang-out at have removed all their electrical-outlets so people can't plug in and stay there extended time - South Beach is a touristy place and also has lots of homeless people so perhaps why the South Beach Starbucks have done this.
There's a 24/hr McDonalds near my house that also removed all their electrical-outlets from the dining room area.
GoVikings posted "I've never had an issue with TUSCL being blocked--at any place---not even the library"
I know that Gogo, the inflight Internet provider for a number of airlines, blocks tuscl. This includes the carrier that I fly frequently. It sucks to be stuck in the air for hours, heading to a city I do not visit often, yet not be able to use some of that time to scope out my club options for when I land.
For blocking stuff they probably just subscribe to some service, and so the standard is probably quite conservative.
1. No blocking in Viet Coffee Shops, though you won't want to be using the Internet while you are there.
2. This works fine for me, and it allows image blocking, like even the avatars and the banner ads. Protection both ways. I had an entire thread about these issues.
I don't think there are any such parameters. It is just these subscription services which will block for you. They invest lots of time and energy in keeping their lists current.
Maybe some of our websurfing members would like that job, looking for more porn and adult material to add to the list.
@papi:. Customer "turnover" is indeed an issue, and if a store is clogged with guests who are no longer paying, there is indeed a cost to the operator.
The Dairy Queens that my family operated were ice cream only stores with no inside seating. Our typical customer turnover time was between 15 and 20 minutes. Brazier stores that had seating typically had a turnover time of 45 to 60 minutes. The upshot is that each customer would have to spend three times the money just to break even on gross. In addition, ice cream only stores are generally much more profitable per item. The operator, to make more money, has to invest in a much larger store, with more expensive equipment, more employees, bigger electric bills and a much larger parking lot - you get the idea.
Starbucks has a bit different business model, but for them, customer churn is really critical. If they can't sell a lot of coffee and a LOT of fancy coffees that will hopefully be for takeout, they will soon be out of business.
Eh, private businesses are private businesses and we don't have to go there if we don't like what they've got. Anyway I don't surf porn or anything but plainest news and mail at coffeeshop/fast food joint hotspots just for the sake of security.
God bless my grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan, and the court that told the carrier to stop throttling it.
Well, I'm headed to my local Starbucks this morning. It's prime time to watch all the babes coming in for their fix. I'll check to see if TUSCL is no longer available. Sheesh, it's such a disgusting site. LOL
I never use public wifi when I need to use a password either. I heard it wasn't secure. My standards are higher than the Clintons. Lol.
Maybe a hacker can post all of Hillary's emails so that she doesn't have to worry about having accidentally deleted over 30,000 of them. I hate it when I accidentally delete over 30,000 emails too.
Well, here at Starbucks, yep it's public domain here, but ask me if I care. If someone hacks me, that's fine, I can hack them right back. The good news is here, today at 9 am, I can still get on TUSCL and I checked one porn site which popped right up. So should I ever need to, for the forseeable future, freedom reigns.

They don't care what you look at over their Internet, but believe me, you won't be watching the Internet.

@larry
I do it because I like a little cream in my coffee.
pretty simple. LOTS of people consume porn, and frequently. they consume it via computer, cell phone, DVD and whatever other formats i'm forgetting.
so naturally, people are going to consume it at starbucks and pretty much anywhere else they can
Can't wait to try tuscl out in public again on my phone!

SJG - you mentioned the Vietnamese coffee shops 3 times in this thread. Does anything happen there other than coffee served in bikinis??

I get my food from Taco Bell, cheap, reliable, and sometimes some nice Latina's working there.

The down side is that they are conformist, materialistic, and manipulative, and also drama queens.

Don't spend you money on Starbucks, find something else.
