When the truth is found, to be. . . . lies And all your friends, they sympathize. Don't you want somebody to love, don't you need somebody to love Grace Slick slamming the tune as Kantner rocked in the background. RIP, Kantner.
Yes, Kantner was quite a character. A guy who did great things, but still at a personal level he always came across as an asshole. Sounded like it was the environment he grew up in, parents always threatening to send him to military school.
English Major who dropped out of Santa Clara University to play in the San Francisco Folk Music Cafe's.
I saw Paul Kantner about 15 years ago at shitty 3rd rate casino, and thought how the mighty had fallen. He had super fox babe singer then, that was best part of the group. RIP. Thanks for posting.
I 'met' the lead singer of Jefferson Starship in a gas station in London a long time ago, he asked the girl on the kiosk if she recognised him, she didn't have a clue. When he told her she was still non the wiser - he was mortified !
When Jefferson Airplane was playing at Altamont was when the trouble started. It's in the movie about the Rolling Stones. The Stones did not want to come on until after dark. But the Airplane was playing in the daytime. At one point there were so many Hells Angles security on stage that the band was being pushed back and the drum kit getting jostled about.
Then one of the Hells Angles hit Marty Balin in the head with a pool stick and knocked him out and Grace Slick was yelling "No No!". Then Paul Kantner said angrily, "I'd like to thank the Hells Angels, for knocking out my lead singer Marty Balin."
The Hells Angles had been reliable security in the past, at Golden Gate Park, or so it seemed. But this time they seemed to be on drugs.
But also, the location for Altamont changed just days before the concert. And the stage was build too low. Way to many people were getting on to the stage to easily and the crowd was always pushing forwards against the stage and the security.
She was a journalist covering Woodstock. Well from her accounts it was clear that Woodstock was also a tinder box and it would not have taken much for it to have turned violent.
There is footage of Bill Graham there saying, "You have to have some controls." He meant that even if a concert is to be free, you still need to have some control to keep order. But people were taking down fences and going where ever they wanted.
He would go on to have his Day On the Green events. As I know they worked out well.
Paul Kantner and Grace Slick have a child, China Kantner. I believe that she is a Born Again Christian.
If you read about the Jefferson Airplane band members, and all the love and freedom, you will also see that there are awful lot of accounts of knives and guns.

Interesting article about how they had to adapt to stay "relevant" during the 80s.

Here, The Jefferson Airplane at Altamont:

Altamont was the one that turned negative, lots of people hurt and one guy shot dead.
But then the Isle of White was also negative.
Remember Patricia Kennealy, like from Oliver Stone's movie "The Doors"
