Pretty self-explanatory. Got into a sports debate this weekend and these knuckleheads wouldn't let it go. A bunch of dudes arguing over Baseball vs. Golf and Football vs. Hockey.
If you enjoy arguing, you might believe there's a point. Almost as bad as the GOAT debates within each sport. Opinionated feed BS by people who can't remember sports before the Sportscenter era.
It would be hard to accurately compare players from different eras30'40's to modern day . Like in the NFL, it would be hard to compare great players especially offensive and defensive linemen just do the sheer size and speed and players of today compared to then. There are certainly guys who would still be excellent players today but I think some old time greats would be in trouble.
Some sports like baseball probably translate better across ages. Basketball probably not as much due to the early make up of the teams vs todays.
This debate comes up all time in sports groups I belong to on Facebook.
Greatest running back of all-time is a common question. Jim Brown could very well be the greatest running back of all-time, but at least one needs to consider the competition he played against.
The defensive lineman of the day smoked. There wasn't such a thing as lifting weights and working out. Hell, most NFL players had to work a real job in the off season to make ends meet do they didn't really keep in shape.
You didn't have freaks of nature like Ray Lewis playing linebacker. Just saying you can't compare the NBA and NFL thru generations. Perhaps baseball.
Just found a crazy stat- Joe DiMaggio hit 361 homers to 369 strikeouts. That's insane. He had years where he homered more than he struck out. Very few players, before or after can even come close to that.
Yeah, the only way to compare players of different eras is to compare them to their peers. How much better are they than the other players they played against? Take Ruth. He was hitting more home runs in a year than entire teams. Super awesome.
That reminds me, those soccer floppers were almost as good as the NBA ones. Nothing like a 6"8" 250 lb guy getting nudged in the back and he goes flying across the court..lol
