When slavery was still practiced in the south, any degree of Negro blood was deemed to make one a Negro. I suspect it was primarily a property thing. A "white" bastard had a tenuous claim to a landowner's inheritance, and extending that to the many "black" bastards fathered by southern slave owners would have been...somewhat less than completely palatable to them. So classifying half, and less, "black" people as black kept them "where they belonged," i.e. in the slave pen.
