Art, as we've discussed before, I was a geology major in college. I never worked in the field, but I still enjoy looking at the web pages of my university's geology department. What was once a male dominated field, the graduate students are now split about 50/50.

Females seem especially drawn to geophysics. Sometimes the grad students are about 80 percent female (mostly Asian). Females are also the majority in environmental and hydro. Males still seem to dominate the more traditional geology concentrations - hardrock geology, sed & strat, and petroleum.

I haven't seen a professional field yet that women don't do just as well as men, if not better. Oddly through the years, I've actually come to prefer women in many roles - including as my doctor. There's a better than even chance a doctor visit will be with a woman, or her female physician's assistant, and they've all been good. I've had many shitty male doctors in the past, so I'm kinda glad to see a female walk in when I'm in pain. And that includes checking out my family jewels and plumbing. I just bend over and let her have her way. Modesty seems to go out the window when you're in pain and need help. More power too'em.

@rod: Given the fact that, in many traditionally male dominated fields, women have had to work harder and be better than their male counterparts in order to be accorded the same respect and attain the same positions. That's becoming less true as we go, but what you describe is one of the consequences.

Whether in a Hospital, Nursing Home or your own home you probably won't have the choice of picking your Nurse strictly on looks. Unless, of course, you hire a Private Duty Nurse via interviews & dictate Age & Looks as your most important criteria.

Early in my career I had to repeatedly prove myself in my male-dominated line of work. But eventually they realized that I knew what I was talking about and I earned their respect. I think my love of stripclubs was the final touch that really won them over.

Hey, running those wonderful machines made it possible to travel and enjoy this wonderful country of ours. I'd truly enjoy a run up to the Northwestern Territory to visit Art on his home turf. A stop in Calgary on the way to throw loonies at the babes in the clubs, find a fine escort. Sounds like a nice trip to me.
